    Australian Open 2026 quarter-finals: Pegula beats Anisimova after Rybakina stuns Swiatek – as it happened

    Unforced errors killed Anisimova in that opening set, the fourth seed committing 13 compared to Pegula’s six. The sixth seed also fired down six aces to her foe’s one, as well as sent down twelve winners to eight.

    The frustration on Anisimova is evident when she hits a backhand into the net to fall further behind but gets a lifeline when Pegula double faults. The fourth seed presses forward and fires down a big backhand return to level things and then gets a break point when Pegula drags a forehand wide.

    Australian Jason Kubler has said teammate Marc Polmans carried him throughout their semi-final win and that he’ll use a day off on Friday to “shake those cobwebs” before their semi-final on Saturday night.

    Polmans’ exceptional shot-making to break serve in the third set propelled the pair past Jan Zielinski and Luke Johnson and into the final.

    “Unbelievable. Far out her carried me today,” Kubler said after the match, while Polmans shook his head modestly.

    Australian pair Jason Kubler and Marc Polmans have made a grand slam final in their first tournament as a men's doubles team, but the highlight of the day will come later with the women's singles semifinals.

    Kubler and Polmans went up against Briton Luke Johnson and Poland's Jan Zielinski. In a fiercely fought semifinal, the Aussies won the opening set 6-2, before their British/polish opponents hit back to take the second 6-3.

    With breaks going both ways in the final set, Polmans in particular stood up, as the pair went on to take the match 6-3 in a little under two hours on Rod Laver Arena.

    News Corp veteran journalist Phil 'Buzz' Rothfield has decided to end his sports journalism career.

    The veteran reporter, who has broken hundreds, if not thousands, of stories over the years, first worked for the publication in 1976, and has been part of rugby league's fabric ever since.

    The Cronulla Sharks supporter has polarised opinion across the NRL landscape during his career, particularly in the later years, with a number of feuds – including against Canterbury Bulldogs director of football Phil Gould – breaking out.

    While Rothfield spent the majority of his time covering rugby league, he also covered other sports including the 2000 Olympic Games where he was the editor of that round for its duration.

    Elite cyclists head to Geelong for criterium showdown

    A CRITERIUM-style race will replace the cancelled Surf Coast Classic races that were to take place later this week, giving elite riders a lead-in event to this weekend’s flagship events in the Mapei Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (CEGORR).

    Central Geelong will host a fast and accessible criterium in parkland tomorrow (Thursday, January 29), following consultation with Victoria Police, emergency services and key stakeholders.

    Earlier today (Wednesday, January 28), CEGORR organisers announced Cadel’s Criterium would be raced over a compact 2km circuit in Eastern Gardens designed to deliver high-speed, technical racing.

    The battle to bring Tones and I, aka Toni Watson to a regional town in Australia has been won with the Victorian indie pop artist choosing Ingham.

    Hinchinbrook Shire Council says it's likely Ingham Showgrounds will be the venue for its surprise gig with the $10 tickets due to go on sale on Wednesday.

    Mary Brown, president of the Hinchinbrook Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Tourism says the whole community has got behind the project and now it's up to the weather gods to play nice for the February 20 concert likely to take place at the Ingham showgrounds. 

    Tones and I has indicated on social media that there's more one-off concerts to come….

    Aleksandra Krunić se plasirala u četvrtfinale i miksa i dubla na Australijan openu. U miksu igra u paru sa Hrvatom Matom Pavićem, a u dublu sa Anom Danilinom. U Melburnu je pričala sa srpskim novinarima, te je otkrila kako je došlo do toga da igra u miksu sa Matom Pavićem.

    Ajoj, Mate… Mate, moj brat. Ništa, ja sam mu napisala poruku na Instagramu: "Hoćeš da igraš?" I on kao ajde javiću ti, ne znam da li ću uopšte da igram, da li neću… Posle mi je pisao: "E, Kruno, ako nisi nekog našla ja bi igra'." Spontano smo se skroz dogovorili. Tako da sam se danas toliko smejala da mi se vilica ukočila, da mi se vilica ukočila s njim, ono lupetanje…Mislim, uživali smo, pa dobro, mi smo iste generacije, isto godište, znamo se.     MELBOURNE, Australia — Vera Zvonareva and Ena Shibahara defeated Australian favorites Talia Gibson and Kimberly Birrell Wednesday evening, and now the doubles semifinals are set. 

    Here's a closer look at the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz doubles semifinalists in Melbourne Park:

    Seventh-seeded pair Aleksandra Krunić and Anna Danilina knocked off the top doubles pair in the world in Katerina Siniakova and Taylor Townsend. With a 6-2, 3-6, 6-0 win, the Slovak-Kazakh pair won 70% of their first-service points to withstand the 2025 Australian Open doubles champions. 

    ANOTHER VICTORY FOR ALEKSANDRA KRUNIĆ: The Serbian player reaches the round of 16 at the Australian Open in doubles!

    Serbian tennis player Aleksandra Krunić and her doubles partner, Kazakhstan’s Anna Danilina, advanced to the round of 16 at the Australian Open after defeating the Australian pair Daria Kasatkina and Arina Rodionova in the second round today in straight sets, 6:3, 6:4.

    The Serbian and Kazakh tennis players broke the Australian duo’s serve six times, while Kasatkina and Rodionova managed three breaks.

    In the round of 16 of the Australian Open, Krunić and Danilina will face the winners of the match between the Slovak-British pair Tereza Mihalíková and Olivia Nicholls and the Australian tandem Storm Hunter and Maya Joint.

    At 99, life member Harry Waldron's heart will forever be with Carranballac

    One of three original life members at the Carranballac Cricket Club, the 99-year-old would not have missed Sunday's fundraiser at Linton for the club he has spent his entire life at, for the world.

    Mr Waldron still goes to Koalas games a few times a year, and even though he now lives in Skipton, he said he still lives and breathes the cricket club.

    The clubrooms at Carranballac and surrounding properties were destroyed during the bushfires which razed more than 20,000 hectares of land on January 9.
