500,000 Australians wait for end to 'limbo' as Butler readies NDIS plan

Mark Butler is set to outline his cost-saving plan for the NDIS. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)

Mark Butler will detail his plan to save billions in spending on the disability scheme, which continues to grow faster than what the federal government says can be sustained.

Mental health groups have urged the government to maintain supports for people with psychosocial disability and provide supports for half a million Australians left in limbo.

Mr Butler will announce the NDIS reforms at the National Press Club today.

National Disability Insurance Scheme Minister Mark Butler must end the "limbo" half a million Australians have been living in when he announces changes to the nation's disability scheme, mental health advocates say.

As federal health minister Mark Butler prepares to announce the government’s latest attempts to reel in the extraordinary cost of Australia’s National Disability Insurance Scheme on Wednesday, preparations of a different sort are under way in financial markets.

Mable, an online marketplace for support workers, is reportedly exploring a potential stock market listing that could make it the first $1 billion company spawned by the $50 billion-odd scheme.

Founder Peter Scutt set up the business with a focus on finding a solution to the frustrating process of getting appropriate aged care for his parents, but business has clearly exploded with the NDIS and made the company very valuable.

Labor to tighten child NDIS eligibility to curb spending as Queensland MP warns change is ‘failing kids’

Health minister faces backlash from states as he announces major changes to scheme ahead of May budget

National disability insurance scheme service providers will be required to undergo mandatory character checks and eligibility rules will be tightened further for children under 18, as Labor moves to curb growth in the $50bn program.

But the health minister, Mark Butler, faces a backlash from state counterparts as he announces major changes on Wednesday, with Queensland accusing federal Labor of walking away from responsibilities to families dependent on long-term care.

Guardian Australia can reveal the Queensland disability minister, Amanda Camm, was blocked from attending a briefing by Butler and the treasurer, Jim Chalmers, on Tuesday. Only state and territory treasurers have been briefed on cuts ahead of the public announcement – not ministers responsible for implementing changes.

S&P 500 sheds 1.5pc as US seen preparing for longer war

US equities and bonds extended losses to end Wall Street’s trading week as hostilities in the Middle East remained high with no end in sight and concerns about global growth and inflation continued to heighten. Oil was eyeing $US113 a barrel late in New York, gold slid below $US4500 an ounce.

As he headed for Florida for the weekend President Donald Trump said he saw no need for a “ceasefire”. Shortly afterward, he posted on social media that the US is “very close to meeting our objectives as we consider winding down our great Military efforts in the Middle East with respect to the Terrorist Regime of Iran”.

Stock market today: Dow, S&P 500, Nasdaq fall after PPI inflation comes in hot ahead of Fed decision

US stocks sank on Wednesday after the Federal Reserve voted to hold rates steady, while Chair Jerome Powell expressed concerns over progress on inflation.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (^DJI) lost roughly 1.6%, or over 750 points, giving up gains for the week to notch its lowest close since November. The S&P 500 (^GSPC) dropped 1.3%, also touching its lowest level since November. The tech-focused Nasdaq Composite (^IXIC) fell over 1.4%.

The Fed decision following a two-day policy meeting received one dissent from Fed governor Stephen Miran, who favored a rate reduction. Officials kept their rate cut forecast steady for 2026.

Losses accelerated as Powell spoke on Wednesday and investor worries grew that the central bank could push out rate cuts in anticipation of higher inflation amid surging oil prices.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Michael Jordan, six-time NBA champion, is now a Daytona 500 winner, too.

Tyler Reddick won "The Great American Race" on Sunday with a last-lap pass at Daytona International Speedway that sent Jordan into a frantic celebration. The NBA Hall of Famer bear-hugged Reddick in Victory Lane and then jointly hoisted the Harley J. Earl Trophy with the 23XI Racing driver.

Jordan, who turns 63 on Tuesday, will get a Daytona 500 ring for his birthday and made it known in Victory Lane that he wears a size 13.

Official race results for the 2026 Daytona 500

Cars were crashing all over the place on the final lap, but NASCAR kept it green as Tyler Reddick used a push from 23XI Racing teammate Riley Herbst to take the lead and win NASCAR's biggest race. This follows a 2025 season where he went winless, but he more than made up for it as he hands team owners Michael Jordan and Denny Hamlin's NASCAR's most coveted trophy.

Former Daytona 500 winners Ricky Stenhouse Jr. and Joey Logano finished second and third, respectively, and all three 23XI drivers finished inside the top ten

Zane Smith won Stage 1 while Bubba Wallace won Stage 2 at Daytona.
