Abdel Abqar: Getafe defender sent off for grabbing genitals of Atletico Madrid's Alexander Sorloth

Atletico Madrid's 1-0 La Liga victory was overshadowed by Getafe defender Abdel Abqar's dismissal for touching the genitals of their striker Alexander Sorloth.

With the hosts leading through Nahuel Molina's long-range strike into the top corner in the eighth minute, Saturday's match descended into chaos seven minutes after the second-half restart.

Referee Miguel Angel Ortiz halted play and indicated a video assistant referee (VAR) check for a possible red-card offence.

Replays on the big screens at Estadio Metropolitano showed Abqar touched Sorloth's groin during an off-the-ball altercation, with the Norwegian forward then pulling his opponent to the ground in retaliation.

Atlético Madrid v Getafe: Unbelievable – Abqar pinches Sorloth in the groin and is sent off following a VAR review

In the 55th minute of Atlético Madrid v Getafe, on matchday 28 of La Liga: the Colchoneros are leading 1–0 thanks to an early goal from former Udinese player Nahuel Molina. Suddenly, Abdel Abqar, the visitors’ defender, is brought down by Norwegian striker Alexander Sorloth, seemingly for no reason, with the ball nowhere near him. VAR investigates the incident and finds something truly unusual.

The footage shows that Abqar gave the opponent who was running past him a proper pinch right where the sun doesn’t shine, provoking a furious reaction from the former Villarreal player from Norway. The referee’s decision after reviewing the footage? A red card for the defender, a yellow card for the striker.

😱What was Abqar thinking? Sent off for a forbidden pinch

The match between Atlético de Madrid and Getafe on matchday 28 of LALIGA left one of the most surreal sequences of the season. At the start of the second half, the visiting defender Abdel Abqar was sent off after a peculiar assault on the local forward Alexander Sorloth, in an action that went unnoticed by the human eye but not by technology.

While attention was focused on another part of the field, the VAR alerted referee Ortiz Arias about an incident on the halfway line. After reviewing the footage, it was confirmed that Abqar gave a pinch to the Norwegian attacker's private parts without the ball in play. Sorloth reacted by knocking down the defender, which earned him a yellow card for protesting, but the greater punishment was for the Moroccan.

Randa Abdel-Fattah to appear at Adelaide literary event in March

A month after the cancellation of Randa Abdel-Fattah from Adelaide Writers' Week, it has been revealed the Palestinian Australian author will speak at the one-off literary event Constellations.

Constellations was organised to fill the void left by the scrapping of this year's Writers' Week, following a mass boycott by authors in response to Abdel-Fattah's cancellation.

Abdel-Fattah will be appearing in conversation with former Writers' Week director Louise Adler at Adelaide Town Hall on March 1.

Palestinian Australian author Randa Abdel-Fattah will appear next month at an alternative event to this year's now-cancelled Adelaide Writers' Week, after she was uninvited from the original literary festival.

A rebel literary festival created in direct response to the cancellation of Adelaide Writers’ Week will feature the two women at the centre of the major event’s implosion.

At the one-off new event, cheekily titled Constellations: Not Writers’ Week, Palestinian-Australian writer Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah – whose removal from AWW sparked the events that last month led to its cancellation – will speak with former Writers’ Week director Louise Adler, who resigned after writers boycotted the event en masse.

Several authors from the original AWW line-up are on the bill, including former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis, writer and academic Professor Clare Wright, former Australian Greens leader Bob Brown and Miles Franklin Award winner Melissa Lucashenko. (Varoufakis is speaking with Abdel-Fattah in Sydney and with Adler in Melbourne at separate Australian Institute events in March.)
