    Queensland Police yesterday arrested two protesters for using the phrase, "From the river to the sea" — one on a singlet —  which is banned in some circumstances under the state's new hate speech laws.

    Police arresting pro-Palestinian protesters for using the phrase “from the river to the sea” had “all the hallmarks of an authoritarian police state”, according to a Greens MP, amid widespread backlash against Queensland’s new hate speech laws.

    The controversial laws went into effect yesterday after passing a vote in parliament last week.

    They ban the slogans “from the river to the sea” and “globalise the intifada”, and make expressing or publishing them punishable for up to two years in prison if doing so would “menace, harass or offend”.

    Two protesters the first to be arrested over banned phrases

    Two people have been arrested at a protest outside Parliament House just hours after Queensland’s new hate speech laws came into effect.

    Shortly after 12.30pm on Wednesday, officers arrested a 33-year-old man at Speakers’ Corner for allegedly uttering a banned phrase during what police confirmed was an unauthorised pro-Palestine protest.

    Footage from the scene shows the man – understood to be a pro-Palestinian activist addressing the crowd ahead of a march – being arrested as the group begins to move.

    Officers later arrested an 18-year-old woman, Bonnie Carter, at King George Square for allegedly wearing a shirt displaying a banned phrase.

    Two men have been charged over the alleged kidnapping and murder of Sydney grandfather Chris Baghsarian.

    The 85-year-old was abducted from his home in North Ryde at 5am on February 13, in what police believe was a case of mistaken identity.

    Gerard Andrews, 29, and Daniel Stevens, 24, did not apply for bail when they fronted court on Thursday.

    A lawyer for one of the men charged over the kidnapping and murder of Sydney grandfather Chris Baghsarian says his client is "no mastermind".

    The 85-year-old was abducted from his home in North Ryde in the early hours of February 13, in what police believe was a case of mistaken identity.

    The grandfather’s alleged killers botched a crime that gripped Sydney and blurred the line between innocent bystanders and the criminal underworld.

    From the moment Chris Baghsarian was taken from his North Ryde home, detectives knew something wasn’t right; the 85-year-old widower lived a quiet life on his own, had never come to the attention of police, had no enemies and, as far as investigators could tell, had no reason to be the target of an abduction.

    Within hours, it appeared certain that whoever snatched Baghsarian had made a grave mistake. Rather than making off with their intended target – the father of a convicted armed robber with links to the Alameddine crime family living a few doors down – the masked men had allegedly taken an innocent grandfather living out his later years in Sydney suburbia.

    Martin Thomas Glynn has faced court again after he was charged in December, when he allegedly pledged support for the Bondi shooters on social media just hours after the attack.

    Mr Glynn is due back in court on February 27, and his Legal Aid lawyer says a bail application will be made then.

    A Perth man who allegedly stated support for the Bondi Beach shooters has appeared in court to face new firearms charges, as his lawyer flagged a bail application.

    More charges for man accused of praising Bondi attack

    A man accused of posting an anti-Semitic social media message in support of the Bondi massacre has been slapped with fresh weapons charges.

    Martin Thomas Glynn is accused of posting on social media in the hours following the December 14 terror attack at Bondi Beach, where two gunmen opened fire on a crowd of Jewish faithful celebrating Hanukkah, killing 15 people.

    The 39-year-old was later charged with conduct intended to racially harass, carrying or possessing a prohibited weapon, and failing to properly store a firearm after police raided his home in Yangebup, south of Perth, on December 24.

    He briefly appeared on Tuesday via video-link in Fremantle Magistrates Court, where magistrate Andrew Matthews read Glynn two additional charges.

    Alberta activists’ covert meetings with US officials revealed, outlining group’s increasingly emboldened efforts

    Covert meetings between separatist activists in the Canadian province of Alberta and members of Donald Trump’s administration amount to “treason”, the premier of British Columbia said on Thursday.

    “To go to a foreign country and to ask for assistance in breaking up Canada, there’s an old-fashioned word for that – and that word is treason,” David Eby told reporters.

    “It is completely inappropriate to seek to weaken Canada, to go and ask for assistance, to break up this country from a foreign power and – with respect – a president who has not been particularly respectful of Canada’s sovereignty.”

    'Respect Canadian sovereignty', Carney tells US officials after they meet Alberta separatists

    Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta's premier say the US should respect Canadian sovereignty after reports emerged that Alberta separatists had talked to the Trump administration about the province possibly leaving Canada.

    Carney said they "expect the US administration to respect Canadian sovereignty – I'm always clear with President Trump to that effect".

    Similarly, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said she expected US officials to leave discussions about the province's "democratic process" to Albertans and Canadians.

    Currently, Alberta separatists are collecting signatures for a petition process that could lead to a referendum on leaving Canada.

    The Financial Times has reported they had meetings with US officials, which drew criticism from some Canadian premiers.

    One of three original life members at the Carranballac Cricket Club, the 99-year-old would not have missed Sunday's fundraiser at Linton for the club he has spent his entire life at, for the world.

    Mr Waldron still goes to Koalas games a few times a year, and even though he now lives in Skipton, he said he still lives and breathes the cricket club.

    The clubrooms at Carranballac and surrounding properties were destroyed during the bushfires which razed more than 20,000 hectares of land on January 9.

    Honolulu: Authorities in New Mexico issued an arrest warrant for director and Emmy Award-winning actor Timothy Busfield to face a child sex abuse charge.

    An investigator with the Albuquerque Police Department filed a criminal complaint in support of the charge, which says a child reported that Busfield touched him inappropriately. The acts allegedly occurred on the set of The Cleaning Lady, a TV series Busfield directed and acted in.
