Selfless act headlines Maddinson's Big Bash comeback

Nic Maddinson registered a rare dismissal in his first BBL game back from the fight with cancer

The spotlight in Saturday's BBL|15 fixture between Sydney Thunder and Hobart Hurricanes was already on Nic Maddinson as he returned to Big Bash cricket after a challenging battle with cancer.

The Thunder batter added another angle to the storyline with a rare and selfless decision to retire in the first innings.

Maddinson was batting on 30 off 26 when he walked out at the end of the 18th over with the scoreboard reading 4-161. In came Daniel Sams and hit 16 off six deliveries as the Thunder reached 205 at the end of the innings.

The retirement loophole which could change BBL forever

Nic Maddinson had hit 30 runs from 26 balls, sharing in a 95-run partnership with David Warner before deciding to end his innings. The Thunder star might’ve changed the game forever.

Marnus, Stokes clash in fiery end to captivating day

Joe Root hit his second century of the series but Travis Head's blitz and a spicy confrontation between Marnus Labuschagne and Ben Stokes lit up Sydney late

Joe Root's bittersweet Australian redemption campaign continued as he equalled Ricky Ponting's mark of 41 Test hundreds, before the home side's battering ram Travis Head rounded on his third century of the series as he helped wipe off close to half of England's advantage in rapid time.

Root's 160 crafted over almost seven hours across the opening two days of Sydney's dead-rubber fifth Ashes Test could have tallied higher still if not for his teammates' wasteful approach in arguably the best batting conditions of the series.

Over the last two decades, Australian prime ministers have become reliable guests of the McGrath Foundation’s high tea, the high-powered annual fundraiser on day three of the Pink Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. But Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is one of two glaring omissions from those expected to show face at today’s function.

Albanese, along with his Communications and Sport Minister Anika Wells, are expected to steer clear of the SCG on Tuesday, amid mounting pressure on Labor to launch a federal inquiry into last month’s Bondi massacre. Instead, Albanese is scheduled to travel to flood-ravaged far north Queensland, according to one person familiar with his schedule.

Someone Made a Robot Act Out a Scene From ‘Love Actually’. This Is Where We Are Now.

Humanoid’s cheeky video goes over better when it doesn’t try to pose that robots are more advanced than they actually are yet.

We’ve enjoyed watching robots fail at seemingly basic tasks ever since Honda’s Asimo ate s—t walking up a staircase nearly 20 years ago. Most of these days are accidental flubs of two robots trying to box one another (why are they always boxing?).

It’s refreshing to see one poking fun at its own childlike attempts to do something simple. Here we’ve got the Humanoid HMND 01 Alpha Bipedal reenacting a classic scene from 2003’s rom-com, Love Actually.

This gift-wrapping robot is quite funny, actually

Sometimes robot videos are unintentionally funny. Other times, they try for humor and only achieve cringe. Every once in a while, though, you get a little robot comedic gem, actually.

Humanoid HMND 01 Alpha Bipedal, a robot that the company claims was built in just five months and learned to walk in only 48 hours, is back with a new holiday-themed task.

While most robot videos offer almost unbelievable feats of smarts and agility, the teams at Humanoid apparently had something else in mind for this Love, Actually-inspired clip.

Residents told to ‘act now’ as thunderstorms hit WA

A storm advice has been issued to West Aussies urging residents to act now to stay safe.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued the alert just before 11am on Wednesday, advising people in Northam, Dowerin, Gingin, Wongan Hills, Armadale and Beverley to prepare now.

“You need to act now and stay safe with severe weather forecast including damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall from late this morning, persisting through the afternoon,” the alert stated.

The wind “may cause damage to homes and property”, and the Department of Fire and Emergency Services is warning locals to secure and tie down outdoor furniture, trampolines and other loose items around your home that could be picked up and thrown by strong winds.

A taste of summer is on the way for parts of the west coast, as hot northeasterly winds drag heat from the western interior down to the west coast early in the week. Heat will then be followed by a multi-day outbreak of thunderstorms for western and southwest WA.
