Match report: Power down Roos for back-to-back wins

Port Adelaide held firm to secure a 21-point win over North Melbourne at Adelaide Oval.

IT WASN’T pretty on the eye, but Port Adelaide did enough to secure an important 21-point victory over North Melbourne at Adelaide Oval.

In a game which lacked flow, thanks in part to a heavy free-kick count (37-33 in favour of Port Adelaide), Josh Carr’s men ground their way to a 10.13 (73) to 7.10 (52) win.

With scores level at three-quarter time, the Power kicked the only three goals of the final term to extend North Melbourne’s miserable Adelaide Oval record.

The first term in particular was played in stark contrast to the intensity of Port Adelaide’s emphatic Showdown win last weekend, as both sides found scoring a real chore.

Super Netball semi-finals: Adelaide Thunderbirds and Melbourne Vixens battle for grand final spot

Adelaide Thunderbirds head coach Tania Obst has called a tactical timeout and told her team to connect.

“We are in control here, we’ve just got to play our processes,” she said.

The Vixens have stopped Adelaide’s goal-blitz in the third quarter with an impressive performance from Lily Graham and Kiera Austin in the super shot period.

The visors shaved the margin down to five-points with one quarter left.

The Vixens have used the Power five segment in the final three minutes of play to claw back some points and reduce the margin to eight points.

Ahead of the super shot period, the Vixens placed young Lily Graham into the game – who has missed the last three games.

Attacker Kiera Austin believes the Melbourne Vixens can defy the doubters in their grand-final qualifier against the red-hot Adelaide Thunderbirds as they aim to overcome their late-season Super Netball slump.

Last year's premiers looked primed to earn a home major semi-final after sitting atop the ladder midway through the season, but their campaign dramatically derailed and the side lost four of their last five games, relinquishing top spot to Adelaide.

The Thunderbirds host the Vixens in the major semifinal in Adelaide, before the West Coast Fever and Melbourne Mavericks meet in the minor semifinal in Perth.

Di Honey has left her third best shooter on to start the fourth quarter after that great super shot showing. It's nice to see that form rewarded but Lily Graham hasn't had a heap of court time this season, so her connection with Austin isn't as solid in live play as they'd like. Graham goes to pass to Austin but Austin wasn't expecting it and the ball goes out of court. It's a throw-in and another opportunity for the Thunderbirds. They add another to their tally and Graham heads back to the bench.

DAVID BYRNE: ‘WHO IS THE SKY?’ TOUR – SIDNEY MYER MUSIC BOWL, MELBOURNE

There’s a danger or even gamble in experiencing one of your favourite artists decades after you first became enamoured with them. The possibility hangs that the memories might be crushed by a mediocre vocal delivery, a disappointing setlist or below par performance. These were thoughts I pondered while arriving at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl to witness  former Talking Heads frontman David Byrne on his Who Is The Sky? 2026 Australia tour.

Seeing Talking Heads on their 1984 Stop Making Sense tour of Australia remains one of my all-time favourite concert events. The gradual building of the stage, the escalation in show dynamics, the big suit, the sheer joy of the climax. Hard to beat. The 2002 Lazy Eyeball tour didn’t have the same impact for me, the Utopia tour was a huge leap in theatrics but looking back, all along the seeds were being sown for what we were about to bear witness to at the bowl tonight. David Byrne is an innovator, a futurist, a commentator on everyday life and all of his artistic wisdom has been collated and installed into this new show.

As Adelaide rolls out the welcome mat to cycling world for Tour Down Under, I feel ashamed | Maeve Plouffe

Australia’s WorldTour race on my local roads fills me with pride, but as the years go on it feels like hosting international friends in a house that is visibly on fire

Sweat rolls off my brow as my legs roll powerless beneath me. Eyes fixed on my glowing bike computer screen, watching as my heart rate climbs faster than the power that can be produced by my legs. 150, 160, 170bpm. How long has that been? I wipe the bead of sweat obscuring the timer. Only five minutes.

I can barely squeeze in each breath, and the walls feel like they’re closing in. Yes, walls. Because it’s not the sun’s glare making this ride unbearable. Outside, it’s freezing. It’s October. But inside, we’re sealed within sterile white walls and glass windows glistening with condensation, sweat puddling on the floor.

The ground has shifted – this year, the balance of power is much more with the women at the Tour Down Under.

While the men's race next week is bigger and remains the flagship of the Adelaide cycling event, the women boast a stronger field.

For the first time, the women's Santos Tour has attracted all 14 WorldTour teams. The powerful Dutch-based SD Worx-Protime squad will make their Adelaide debut.

There's an old refrain that you're going to hear a lot in the next few weeks, and that's that the cycling season doesn't really start until Opening Weekend. A lot of people will joke – and some seriously believe – that everything before Omloop Het Nieuwsblad is basically just cycling friendlies, an extension of winter training.

Well, I'm here to tell them that they're wrong, and by subscribing to that point of view, you miss out on some of the best races of the year. With the Tour Down Under right around the corner, it's time for us to recognise and appreciate the actual start of the season.

ATP Adelaide Day 2 Predictions Including Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Aleksandar Vukic

First-round action at the ATP Adelaide International concludes with seven intriguing matches on Day 2. Greek No. 1 Stefanos Tsitsipas will look to find form before the Australian Open. Who will advance?

Tristan Schoolkate is coming off his best year on the Challenger Tour. He won two titles and made his long-awaited top 100 debut. His 2026 season began in Brisbane, where he lost to James Duckworth in qualifying. Hijikata is returning to Adelaiade with quarterfinal points to defend. The 24-year-old has been ranked as high as No. 62 but has since fallen out of the top 100. He started the season with a second-round run in Brisbane. When it comes to superior movement and defensive instincts, Hijikata should come out on top.
    Prediction: Hijikata in 2

WTA Adelaide Day 2 Predictions Including Liudmila Samsonova vs Marketa Vondrousova

The WTA Adelaide draw starts to narrow as players look to build momentum in one of the final stops before Melbourne. With conditions that reward aggressive baseline play and confident serving, early-round matchups can quickly turn on rhythm and timing. Day 2 offers a mix of power, variety, and contrasting styles, setting up contests where execution in key moments should be decisive. As always, we break down the matches and give our predictions for all the matches on the schedule, but who will progress?

Cirstea’s game is well suited to hard courts, where her flat groundstrokes and willingness to step inside the baseline allow her to take control of rallies. She’s also experienced enough to manage tempo swings and stay patient when matches tighten. Yastremska brings raw power and aggression, but her level can fluctuate, especially when forced to hit extra balls. In their past meetings, Cirstea has shown she can absorb pace and redirect it effectively but her lack of confidence and Yastremska’s ability to keep the ball deep and limits free points, that steadiness should pay off.
    Prediction: Yastremska in 2
