Senegal's AFCON win overturned months after controversial final

Morocco has been awarded the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title by appeals judges who stunningly overturned Senegal's victory in a chaotic final in January.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) said its appeals board ruled that Senegal was "declared to have forfeited the final" and its 1-0 win in extra time becomes a 3-0 default win for host nation Morocco.

In the January 18 final in Rabat, Senegal players led by coach Pape Thiaw left the field in protest during stoppage time for 15 minutes — and fans tried to storm the field — when Morocco was awarded a penalty that was set to decide the match.

Morocco have been awarded a 3-0 victory in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations final after Senegal were sensationally stripped of the title in an unprecedented ruling.

The Confederation of African Football (Caf) announced on Tuesday evening that its appeal board had decided that Senegal are “declared to have forfeited the final” that was held in Rabat in January after head coach, Pape Thiaw, and some of his players left the pitch for 15 minutes in protest at Morocco being awarded a penalty. They eventually returned after being implored to by captain Sadio Mané, with Brahim Díaz’s subsequent spot-kick being saved to send the final into extra time when Pape Gueye scored the winning goal.

When Mohamed Salah leads out Egypt in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) semi-final against Senegal, he will feel both the weight of expectation from his nation and his own personal pressure to deliver a place in the final.

The North Africans are record seven-time continental champions but the most recent of those successes came in 2010, a year before the Liverpool forward's international debut.

The 33-year-old was a losing finalist at the 2017 and 2021 editions – with those defeats sandwiching a last-16 exit in 2019 on home soil – and he was then injured as Egypt suffered an early exit at the 2023 finals.

Senegal, group winners and unbeaten in Group D, will face Group E third-place finishers Sudan in the Round of 16 at the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Morocco 2025.

Afcon roundup: Mohamed Salah strikes again as 10-man Egypt hold off South Africa

Mohamed Salah scored a first-half penalty as 10-man Egypt defeated South Africa 1-0 in their Africa Cup of Nations Group B clash in Agadir on Friday to become the first team into the knockout stages of the competition.

Egypt have six points from their opening two games and cannot finish outside of the top two in the group. South Africa have three points from their two games, while Zimbabwe and Angola have one each after they drew 1-1 earlier in the day.

Salah won the penalty when he was clipped in the face by South Africa defender Khuliso Mudau as they tussled for the ball in the box, and stepped up to easily convert for his second goal of the tournament.
