The 19th AFL club took a major step towards reality on Monday, when former Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley was named the Tasmania Devils’ inaugural coach.

While their new Macquarie Point stadium remains a work in progress, the Devils are on track to enter the league in 2028, at which point one team will be forced into a bye each week.

For that, and several other reasons, a 20th team shouldn’t be too far away.

Roth reveals key to winning over Tasmania

The Tasmania JackJumpers have been a hit since they entered the NBL during the 2021-22 season, and now their AFL state counterparts, the Devils, are aiming to follow suit.

The Devils this week took their next step to joining the AFL as its 19th team in 2028 by announcing Ken Hinkley as their inaugural coach.

One man who knows all about coaching on the Apple Isle is JackJumpers’ Scott Roth, who offered advice to his Tasmanian counterpart.

"This state is big, and people want to see you," Roth said to the ABC.

"They want to see you in the coffee shops, they want to see you in the gas station, they want to see you going through the supermarket or wherever. You've gotta be out there pressing the flesh."

Buckley opts out of Dons, Blues coaching races after Tasmania snub

Nathan Buckley says he will not join the coaching races at either Essendon or Carlton after being overlooked by Tasmania.

Tasmania chose to appoint former Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley over Buckley as its inaugural senior coach.

Despite the snub, Buckley says he is adamant he wants to coach at a second AFL club.

A disappointed Nathan Buckley is ruling out bidding for other vacant AFL head coaching jobs after being overlooked by the Tasmania Devils.

While Buckley, who openly coveted the Tasmanian post that went to Ken Hinkley, says he wants to be a head coach again, he is unlikely to pitch for the vacant positions at Essendon and Carlton.

The "ideal world" Merrett AFL trade package for Essendon

If Zach Merrett were to leave Essendon (and that looks a certainty), what would the ideal trade package look like from a Bombers perspective?

It's a question I've been asking myself as an Essendon supporter, particularly after reading Aidan Cellini's article on Zero Hanger last week.

Replacing a player of Merrett's calibre is impossible. You don't simply find another six-time Crichton Medallist and one of the competition's elite midfielders overnight. The reality is that Essendon would need to use any deal to address multiple list needs while setting themselves up for the future.

The Bombers' most glaring issues are well documented. They desperately need another key defender, greater small forward pressure and class at ground level, while a long-term ruck solution also remains high on the priority list.

The AFL has made a call on umpire Matt Stevic after a controversial decision in the Hawks' win over the Blues

VETERAN field umpire Matt Stevic has been selected to officiate in round 19.

Stevic made a mistake when he awarded a 50m penalty against Carlton midfielder Adam Cerra on Saturday night after appearing to call play on.

CARLTON has named a change to its 23 for Saturday night’s clash with Hawthorn.

Flynn Riley will make his AFL debut, becoming the Blues’ sixth AFL debutant of the campaign.

Formerly of the Carlton Reserves, it’s been quite the rise for Riley, who was recruited to the Blues in the mid-season draft.

206cm ruck Flynn Riley will join the AFL list after being drafted with pick No.4 in the Mid-season draft.

Adelaide has made one change to its team for its clash against West Coast at Optus Stadium on Friday night.

Forward/ruck Toby Murray has been named in the line-up, and will make a return to the side for the first time since Round 14.

Murray’s inclusion comes off the back of a dominant display in the Crows’ SANFL win against Port Adelaide last weekend.

The 22-year-old finished the match with 20 disposals, 10 hit-outs, seven marks, four clearances and four goals.

“Toby showed exactly what we needed to see last week in what was a dominant performance at SANFL level,” Executive General Manager Football Adam Kelly said.

WEST Coast will be bolstered by the return of star on-baller Tim Kelly from a hamstring injury, while mid-season recruit Oliver Francou will make his AFL debut to add more midfield grunt ahead of its clash with Adelaide on Friday night.

The Eagles (4-11) were blitzed in the midfield during last week's 53-point loss to Carlton.

Francou, the son of former Port Adelaide midfielder Josh Francou, has starred in the WAFL since being picked up by West Coast, averaging 24 disposals and eight tackles per game across his four matches.

AFL takes action after Hardwick's umpire comments

Damien Hardwick got a call from AFL head office on Monday after his comments on Friday night

THE AFL has put Damien Hardwick on notice for his comments relating to umpiring decisions on Friday night, with the League's football boss Greg Swann calling the Suns coach personally to address his post-match outburst.

It is understood Swann rang Hardwick on Monday morning to express his disappointment in the comments, although the Gold Coast coach has not been fined and is not expected to be punished further for his words.

Speaking after the match, Hardwick compared GMHBA Stadium to the Roman Colosseum and suggested that umpires were waiting for a reaction from the crowd before making their decision on several incidents.

Damien Hardwick should stop pointing the finger and making excuses for Gold Coast’s subpar performances in 2026.

The Suns, who many tipped to contend this year, lost a third game on the trot when beaten by Geelong by 45 points on Friday night.

Hardwick was unhappy with the result but in particular the umpiring as he felt the Cats were the recipients of some questionable free kicks which led to goals.

"I reckon they (the umpires) were waiting for the crowd to do this one (thumb down) then, all of a sudden, free kick.

"At the end of the day it is what it is, home-ground advantage, we understand that, we know you're up against it from the start, but a couple of them weren't there."
