    Top African referee Omar Artan refused access to US and will miss World Cup

    Was going to be first Somali to officiate at a World Cup

    A Somali referee, who was set to become the first person from his country to officiate at a World Cup, has been denied access to the US and will not work at the tournament.

    Fifa confirmed that Omar Artan “will be unable to train and officiate at the Fifa World Cup 2026” in a statement issued to media on Monday. The governing body passed responsibility for the situation to the US government, saying that they were “informed by authorities that Mr Artan’s status will not be changed at present”.

    The US has denied football referee Omar Artan entry to the country ahead of the FIFA World Cup.

    US officials said the highly respected Somali referee had been determined to be "inadmissible due to vetting concerns".

    The World Cup is set to begin on Friday at 5am AEST.

    US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) confirmed a Somali national who was planning to referee in the World Cup had been denied entry after arriving at Miami International Airport from Istanbul on Saturday.

    Julius Malema: South African opposition figure sentenced to five years

    South African opposition politician Julius Malema, 45, has been sentenced to five years after being found guilty of the illegal possession of a gun and firing it in public.

    Malema's lawyer immediately appealed against the decision to prevent the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters and member of parliament from being taken to prison.

    Standing in the East London court in a dark suit and red tie, Malema showed little emotion as Magistrate Twanet Olivier read out the sentence.

    Last year, he was convicted of five offences, including the unlawful possession of a firearm, discharging it in a public space and reckless endangerment.

    The South African leftwing politician Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years in prison for firing a rifle in the air at a political rally in 2018.

    Lawyers for the leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters, South Africa’s fourth largest political party, immediately sought leave to appeal. The magistrate is currently considering whether to grant this.

    Malema was convicted last year on charges including unlawful possession of a firearm and discharging a weapon in a public place, after an incident at the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations in KuGompo City, then known as East London.

    Julius Malema sentenced to 5 years in prison in firearm discharge case

    KUGOMPO CITY – Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years direct imprisonment in his firearm handling and discharge case.

    Malema appeared in the East London Regional Court for a second day in his highly publicised sentencing. 

    He was convicted of five counts last October including violating the Firearms Control Act after firing live rounds during his party's birthday celebrations in 2018.
