Passengers at Perth Airport Terminal 1 are allowed back into the building after the Australian Federal Police and WA Police investigated a reported unattended bag, but delays are still expected.

The AFP had urged the public to "avoid the area and await further advice".

However, after passengers were stuck outside for almost two hours, they were let back into the airport by 6:30pm.

"The AFP and [WA Police] investigation at Terminal 1 International has now concluded, and the impacted areas are beginning to reopen," a statement from Perth Airport read.

United Arab Emirates Joins Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan and More in Propelling Over Fifty Thousand Flight Cancellations Across the Middle East as They Face Region-Wide Airspace Shutdowns and Severe Security Threats: Everything You N

The United Arab Emirates has joined Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan and more countries across the Middle East in propelling over fifty thousand flight cancellations across the region as escalating geopolitical tensions trigger region-wide airspace shutdowns and severe security threats affecting global aviation. Major international hubs such as Dubai International, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Riyadh and Bahrain are experiencing widespread schedule disruptions as airlines cancel, reroute or delay flights to avoid unstable air corridors. The combination of airspace restrictions, security alerts and operational uncertainty has forced carriers to ground thousands of services linking Europe, Asia and Africa through the Gulf’s key transit airports. As the United Arab Emirates joins Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan and other regional destinations in facing these region-wide airspace shutdowns and severe security threats, the result has been over fifty thousand cancelled flights across the region, disrupting tourism, business travel and global passenger connectivity while raising concerns about the stability of one of the world’s busiest aviation crossroads.

Palau International Airport gets upgrade funding

Palau International Airport has received funding from the U.S. Trade and Development Agency to upgrade critical aviation infrastructure. The technical assistance will update the airport’s master plan to help it prepare for long-term growth, including analysis of how to extend the existing runway to accommodate larger planes, and will provide guidance on determining the specifics of airport development needs across the country.

Pacific Island countries like Palau are among the world’s most air-dependent economies due to their remote location. Airline connectivity is critical for driving tourism, as well as education, employment opportunities, healthcare access, and the delivery of goods and services. Improved and expanded ROR infrastructure will facilitate economic development, including by ending logistical constraints limiting the size of aircraft that can use ROR and by developing other airstrips in the country.

Taiwan to join 2026 Pacific Islands Forum after 2025 absence: MOFA

Taipei, Feb. 24 (CNA) Taiwan will join a major political gathering of Pacific island nations later this year in Palau, a senior diplomat said Tuesday, after it and other non-members of the bloc were barred from having any role in the annual event in 2025.

Michael Lin (林昭宏), head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' (MOFA) Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said Taiwan will once again join the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting to be held in Palau from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4.

Lin did not say what Taiwan's participation would entail, but it could involve holding side events at the forum as has been the case in previous years except for 2025, when Taiwan's representatives could not even go to the Solomon Islands, which hosted last year's forum.

Sydney Airport in chaos as air traffic staff shortages hits flights

Dozens of flights at the country’s busiest airport have been cancelled on Thursday in the worst disruption to air travel since the pandemic, as an acute shortage of air traffic control staff created havoc for Qantas and Virgin Australia.

Many other flights were delayed, with some aircraft forced to wait on the tarmac at Sydney Airport for two hours, issues that Airservices Australia, which runs air traffic control, blamed on a smaller team.

Dozens of domestic flights at Sydney Airport are cancelled and several others will face hours-long delays because of a shortage of air traffic control staff.

About 30 Qantas and Jetstar flights have been axed, while Virgin also expects cancellations, as Airservices Australia implements “spacing intervals” for flights arriving and departing Sydney to safely manage operations on Thursday.

Exit Signs or Just Decorations? Chaos at Brisbane International Airport Raises Serious Safety Concerns

Passengers travelling through Brisbane International Airport were left confused and alarmed on Tuesday, 13 January, after a fire alarm sounded inside the international terminal, triggering flight delays and widespread disruption. While the alarm itself was eventually understood to be minor, the airport’s response exposed a far more serious issue: a troubling lack of preparedness and staff training during emergency situations.

As the alarm rang, passengers did what any reasonable person would do in a potential emergency — they looked for the nearest clearly marked exit. One such exit, prominently indicated with a green emergency sign, was located at a terminal departure gate. Several passengers attempted to use this exit, only to be stopped by a security staff member who insisted it was not to be used.
