There has been a steep rise in scammers luring victims into phoney investment opportunities using deepfakes of celebrities and politicians, Australia’s corporate watchdog has warned.

Real footage of the prime minister, overlaid with fake audio promising Australians can invest $4,000 to earn $40,000 a month, appears in one video online.

“This is not just another scam product,” the deepfake Albanese says, falsely describing it as an “official platform” with a government guarantee.

The fake Alan Kohler interview that shows a type of scam that’s on the rise

Reserve Bank governor Michele Bullock sits down across the studio from ABC finance presenter Alan Kohler.

According to a now-removed article that appeared online, the interview gets increasingly heated, until, astonishingly, Bullock storms out. She doesn’t like Kohler’s questions about a system called Boulder Sparhaven, “an algorithm that automatically exploits market functions”.

But Boulder Sparhaven, a cryptocurrency trading platform, is not licensed to provide financial services in Australia, and the federal government’s Moneysmart website urges people to “be wary” of dealing with it. And that fiery interview between Kohler and Bullock never happened.

It’s a kind of scam that the Australian Securities and Investments Commission says is on the rise.

Albanese flags new fuel announcements as petrol prices tipped to spike further

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says his government is not planning to extend the fuel excise discount but has foreshadowed there will be further announcements on fuel in the coming days.

The 32 cents a litre fuel excise discount expired 30 June but was extended by another month at 16 cents a litre.

That discount is set to expire 2 August, at which point Australian drivers will no longer be shielded from price increases at the bowser.

Petrol and diesel prices have risen sharply in the past week. In Melbourne, unleaded rose six per cent to $1.80 per litre, while diesel rose 12 per cent to $2.17.

Pain at the pump is about to worsen for Australian drivers, when the fuel excise returns at the end of the week.

The federal government is moving to reassure motorists about Australia's fuel supply as the conflict between the United States and Iran re-escalates once again.

Oil prices tipped over $US100 ($143) a barrel this week for the first time since May, with the national average unleaded 91 price at $1.88 per litre on Saturday and diesel at $2.30.

The fuel excise discount is due to expire on August 2, having been halved this month to 16 cents per litre.

The federal government is moving to reassure motorists about Australia's fuel supply as petrol prices rise amid renewed clashes in the five-month-old war in the Middle East.

Prime minister moved from The Lodge to another location while investigation under way

Anthony Albanese was evacuated from his official Canberra residence on Tuesday night as police responded to a bomb threat.

The prime minister was moved from The Lodge to another location at about 6pm while an investigation was carried out. He was able to return after 9pm once a search had been completed.

An Australian federal police spokesperson said they were alerted to an alleged security incident at the property, near Parliament House.

Guardian Australia has been told it involved the threat of an explosive.

“A thorough search of a protection establishment was undertaken and nothing suspicious was located,” a statement said.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has been evacuated from The Lodge during a security incident.

The incident at Mr Albanese's residence in Canberra sparked a significant police operation, and led to the prime minister being taken to another location for several hours.

The Australian Federal Police confirmed that at 6pm it responded to an "alleged security incident".

"A thorough search of a protection establishment was undertaken and nothing suspicious was located," the AFP said in a statement.

"There is no current threat to the community or public safety."

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was evacuated from his Canberra residence following a safety threat.

Australian Federal Police began responding to the alleged threat about 6pm on Tuesday.

Mr Albanese was sent to another location, away from his main, heavily guarded residence, for more than three hours. He returned home after 9pm.

"A thorough search of a protection establishment has commenced and is still ongoing," a statement from the AFP said earlier on Tuesday evening.
