Alex de Minaur has been knocked out of the Australian Open by world number one Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.

"When he's playing against the best or the top player, he's trying to be more aggressive, which sometimes [means] he's just out of his comfort zone," Alcaraz said after his 7-5, 6-2, 6-1 win over de Minaur.

The World No.6 enjoyed a brilliant Australian Open campaign to make the last eight, producing dominant wins over 29th seed Frances Tiafoe and 10th seed Alexander Bublik.

But he was no match for World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz on Tuesday night, going down in straight sets 5-7 2-6 1-6. It once again exposed the gaping divide between Alcaraz and World No.2 Sinner and the rest of the field.

De Minaur is now a combined 0-19 in his career against Alcaraz and Sinner – 0-6 against Alcaraz and 0-13 against Sinner. He's now made seven quarter-finals appearances at grand slams but never made a semi, becoming the third man after Andrey Rublev and Tommy Robredo to achieve that unwanted feat.

Last night Naomi Osaka apologised for her “disrespectful” on-court interview following her second-round victory over Romania’s Sorana Cirstea, where the two had a heated exchange at the net after the match.

Cirstea appeared to have been annoyed with Osaka pumping herself up and yelling “C’mon” between first and second serves.

“I mean, I tried to play well, I think I hit a lot of unforced errors, but I tried my best. She’s a great player, I think this was her last Australian Open, so, OK, [I’m] sorry she was mad about it.”

A chance encounter with Rod Laver, a trifecta of on-court marriage proposals and a straight-sets passage into the Australian Open quarterfinals gave Carlos Alcaraz plenty to report when recapping his day to his family back home on Saturday.

The Spaniard reached his third straight Melbourne Park quarterfinal following a 7-6(6) 6-4 7-5 victory over Tommy Paul to keep his bid for a career Slam on track and if a good omen was needed before the clash, a meeting with the legendary Laver beneath the arena bearing his name was it.

Carlos Alcaraz serves up lesson with Australian Open dismissal of Paul

Carlos Alcaraz spent the final 52 minutes of his fourth-round match chasing down his prey, determined to convert his two-set lead into a straightforward win against Tommy Paul.

As he worked hard to secure the decisive break in set three, the Spaniard put together a flawless serving performance. He won 86% of his first‑serve points in the set, landing 76% of his first serves. He did not even come close to facing a break point, losing just five service points in total. The world No 1 closed out his win against the 19th seed with an unreturned serve. He will play the Australian Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals.
