Why Alexander Zverev thinks his preparation for the Monte-Carlo Masters could work in his favour

Alexander Zverev heads into Monte Carlo with plenty of reason to feel good about his game after a steady start to the season.

But this upcoming stretch could be pivotal if he wants to take the next step and finally break through at Grand Slam level.

Zverev has had a remarkable career, but there’s still one major milestone left to cross off: a Grand Slam title. He’s got every reason to believe Roland Garros gives him the best shot at getting it done.

His build-up hasn’t gone as planned, though. Despite that, Zverev believes the lack of preparation could actually work in his favour.

Trent Alexander-Arnold's England World Cup hopes in doubt, so what now for Real Madrid defender?

Players have to push for their World Cup ticket – Tuchel

Trent Alexander-Arnold's omission from Thomas Tuchel's largest England squad is the latest blow to his stop-start international career and casts huge doubt on his hopes of playing at the World Cup.

Head coach Tuchel said on Friday he had "not yet" spoken to the 27-year-old about his exclusion, with the full-back now absent from four successive squads.

Alexander-Arnold is back playing for Real Madrid after injury but is not in the 35-man group for the last international camp before Tuchel finalises his squad for this summer's tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

Tuchel thinks outside the box in final push for World Cup places with England expansion

Decision to essentially name two squads featuring 35 players overall is the ‘least messy’ solution and offers the best chance to assess fringe players

It has been on Thomas Tuchel’s mind for some time, certainly since his England team secured qualification to the World Cup last November with the perfect record – played eight, won eight, zero goals conceded. The March international window, the last one before the finals in the summer, was always going to be less ideal.

It arrives at the moment when the club season enters its final stretch; trophies on the line, European places, survival or relegation. The lot. It is not as if the players have not already been pushed hard. Now rotation for the very best, the ones that Tuchel counts on, is simply not an option.

England squad for pre-World Cup friendlies: Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Maguire recalled

Thomas Tuchel explains why he didn't name Trent Alexander-Arnold in his latest England squad. (1:17)

Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo have been recalled to the England setup but Trent Alexander-Arnold is left out as Thomas Tuchel named a mammoth 35-man squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley.

Neither Maguire nor Mainoo have previously been selected by Tuchel before with both last appearing for England in a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland under interim boss Lee Carsley in September 2024.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander cleared to return for Thunder

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Reigning NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was cleared to return Thursday after missing the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder's past nine games because of an abdominal strain.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who is not on the official injury report, will be available for Friday's home game against the Denver Nuggets.

The Thunder went 5-4 in Gilgeous-Alexander's absence after he suffered the injury during a Feb. 3 win over the Orlando Magic. Oklahoma City's lead atop the Western Conference standings has been trimmed to two games over the San Antonio Spurs, who have won 10 straight games and own the season tiebreaker between the teams.

Thunder vs Nuggets injury report, prediction: Is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander playing tonight?

OKC Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is available to play in a home game against the Denver Nuggets at 8:30 p.m. CST Friday.

Gilgeous-Alexander missed the last nine games due to an abdominal strain. He'll look to help OKC (45-15) bounce back from a 124-116 road loss to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Denver (37-22) continues to be without Aaron Gordon and Peyton Watson due to right hamstring strains. Jamal Murray is also questionable due to an illness.

Alexander Zverev pinpoints issues vs Carlos Alcaraz in Australian Open semi-finals

Alexander Zverev is back in action this week, stepping into the Mexican Open for his first tournament since a tough loss at the Australian Open semi-finals.

The German fell to Carlos Alcaraz in five sets, coming just short of reaching the final.

After dropping the first two sets, Zverev battled back to force a fifth and even found himself just one game away from closing out the match.

Now getting ready for Acapulco, Zverev spoke about how he felt about that semi-final match in Australia.

Ahead of UFC325, UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski believes he is ready to take it to the next level against Diego Lopes. (2:24)

UFC Fight Night 121 is not a card fondly recalled in MMA circles, let alone for the 10,021 fans who travelled to Sydney's Qudos Bank Arena on Sunday Nov. 19, 2017.

The event, it seemed, was doomed almost from the outset. Whether it was heavyweight Mark Hunt's withdrawal from the main event due to "medical concerns" or Joanne Calderwood's scratching because of an "undisclosed injury", a doping violation for The Ultimate Fighter Series: Redemption winner Jesse Taylor, and then four separate weight misses on the card's eve, UFC Fight Night Sydney had more than its fair share of missteps.

Alex Volkanovski's glorious past meets an uncertain future at UFC 325

It took less than five minutes for a question about his retirement to arrive, but Alex Volkanovski must have known it was coming.

Ahead of his UFC 325 rematch with Brazil's Diego Lopes in Sydney this Sunday, every interview, sooner or later, rounds back to the UFC featherweight champion's future or, given he is 37 in a sport where the young feast on the old, what might be left of it.

This press conference on Wednesday was no exception, and Volkanovski gave the same answer as ever — he knows the end is close, and that one day soon the gloves will come off for the last time and the rest of forever will start, but he is not rushing towards that day.
