    The federal opposition leader has been named as a potential donor to a conservative Liberal group now being investigated by the New South Wales corruption watchdog. Angus Taylor himself is not accused of wrongdoing.

    The Independent Commission Against Corruption (Icac) on Tuesday held its second day of Operation Rosny hearings into allegations of corruption against people associated with the NSW Liberal party.

    In her opening statement on Monday, counsel assisting Peggy Dwyer SC said evidence would show how a group of young Liberal power brokers known as the “Reformers” allegedly “solicited or accepted” donations, including from prohibited donors, in amounts which were undeclared or exceeded caps, to recruit or renew members to the party.

    In the often shady and absurd world of Sydney politics, the Independent Commission Against Corruption is the ultimate spectator sport. The watchdog’s intense public hearings can ruin careers overnight or, in the case of a small group of lawyers, make them.

    Exhibit A: Dr Peggy Dwyer, SC, the counsel assisting the ICAC in its blockbuster Operation Rosny inquiry. The probe, which will spend the next eight weeks exploring links between the NSW Liberal Party, dodgy developer Jean Nassif and others, commenced on Monday after four years of forensic behind-the-scenes investigative work.

    The diminutive Dwyer, who has played a significant role in several cases of national interest over the past decade, gathered a legion of new fans as she spent three hours delivering a near-flawless 20,533-word opening statement. One WhatsApp chat for a group of Macquarie Street MPs watching the livestream included the not-so-subtle observation: “Wow. She’s f—ing great.”

    Angus Taylor has “rocks in his head” if he endorses Tony Abbott’s tilt at the federal Liberal presidency, according to insiders who warn the former prime minister would stir up drama and distraction for the opposition leader and his struggling party.

    A contest is shaping up between Abbott and former foreign minister Alexander Downer to replace ex-South Australian premier John Olsen as Liberal Party president when the party’s federal council meets in Melbourne later this month.

    ‘Not a political job’: Downer chides Abbott

    Former foreign minister Alexander Downer has taken a veiled swipe at former cabinet colleague and prime minister Tony Abbott, as he confirmed his intention to run for the Liberal Party presidency.

    Amid fears among moderate and other Liberals that Abbott, who is also seeking the role, will use it as a platform for his own policy agenda, Downer, a conservative, suggested that would be inappropriate.

    Angus Taylor becomes Liberal leader

    Angus Taylor is the leader of the federal Liberal Party after prevailing in a partyroom meeting in Canberra.

    He replaces Sussan Ley, the first woman to hold the role, who was removed after just nine months.

    Mr Taylor won by a comfortable margin with 34 votes to Ms Ley's 17, according to several Liberals present.

    Jane Hume was chosen as deputy leader, the first senator to hold the role since 1990.

    Four candidates nominated including incumbent Ted O'Brien, Dan Tehan and Melissa Price. 

    Ms Price was eliminated first with two votes, and then Mr Tehan in the second round with 11 votes.

    Sussan Ley took this job with ambition and promise. But things soon unravelled

    In the weeks after she was narrowly elected by her colleagues as the federal Liberal Party’s first female leader, Sussan Ley sounded full of the optimism that often comes with fresh starts.

    She promised to be a new leader, with a new tone, new team and new agenda. She wanted to move her party to the so-called sensible centre. She would win back Australian women, young people, cities and multicultural communities. She was going to listen to her colleagues, and forge a cohesive and consultative party room process that catered to a range of views.

    Those many promises made for a mighty assignment. Nine months later, they’re mostly unfulfilled.

    After facing defeat for the deputy leadership, Dan Tehan pops up on ABC TV and congratulates Angus Taylor and Jane Hume.

    On what Taylor will do differently (which is the question on everyone’s lips), Tehan says it’s important for Taylor to have strong “political manifesto” with clear cut policies.

    I think we need a serious political manifesto, which is, you know, true to our values, which clearly articulates where we want to take the nation … I have no doubt that anyone who stands for leader of the Liberal Party has a very good vision for where they want to take this nation. And I’m not going to get ahead of Angus and Jane.
