Team Announcement: Veterans join young gun in Lions line-up

The Brisbane Lions have welcomed back two veteran defenders and an exciting young midfielder for Friday night’s clash against Hawthorn at the Gabba.

Premiership duo Dayne Zorko and Darcy Gardiner return to the Lions’ backline, while first-year player Daniel Annable gets his second opportunity at AFL level.

Zorko is back after being managed last week, Gardiner plays his first game since Round 17 due to a hamstring strain and Annable has overcome a Round 1 shoulder injury.

Lions Co-Captain Hugh McCluggage is a late out due to calf tightness, with the midfielder ruled out following today’s Captain’s Run at the Gabba.

These Lions have defied history before. To three-peat, they'll need to again

Another thrashing has left the Lions needing to defy history to complete a famous three-peat

Brisbane is chasing a three-peat in 2026, but its premiership chances are looking shaky after a demolition at the hands of Carlton at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.

The surprise 76-point loss marked another heavy defeat for the Lions, who had won seven straight games to get their season back on track.

The loss to the Blues was Brisbane's second defeat by 75 points or more this season, following its hammering by Greater Western Sydney (78 points) in round 11.

Only two teams in VFL/AFL history have lost two games by such a margin and gone on to win the premiership, showing the enormity of the task ahead of the Lions.

‘Gutted’ McKeown withdraws from Comm Games

Superstar Australian swimmer Kaylee McKeown has withdrawn from the Commonwealth Games and Pan Pacific Championships.

Swimming Australia confirmed in a statement on Friday that the five-time Olympic gold medallist would not be competing in Glasgow or California because of glandular fever.

The Commonwealth Games run from July 23 to August 2 and the Pan Pacific Championships – featuring Australia, the USA, Japan and Canada – from August 12-15.

“I am gutted to medically withdraw. What I thought a few months ago was the flu has turned out to be my body fighting glandular fever,” McKeown said.

“I was sick going into trials and I just have not got better and I am worried about pushing myself so hard that I end up with chronic fatigue.

Kaylee McKeown withdraws from Commonwealth Games with illness

Olympic champion and six-time Commonwealth Games medallist Kaylee McKeown has been forced to medically withdraw from the upcoming Games in Glasgow, less than two weeks out from the start of competition.

Swimming Australia announced on Friday morning that McKeown – one of the greatest backstrokers of all time and a five-time Olympic gold medal winner – had withdrawn from this month’s competition after coming down with glandular fever.

The 24-year-old’s withdrawal is a huge blow for the Australian swim team in Glasgow, with McKeown winning the women’s 100m and 200m backstroke at the 2022 Games in Birmingham and swimming as part of the team that won gold in the women’s 4x100m medley relay and mixed 4x100m medley relay. She could have won up to four gold medals for Australia, including relays.

CGT like it’s 1999: Chalmers leans towards scrapping Howard-Costello tax discount

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

A return to the original way of taxing capital gains on property under the Hawke and Keating governments is firming as a centrepiece of the May budget as Treasurer Jim Chalmers prepares the final shape of his fiscal blueprint.

This masthead can reveal that Chalmers is leaning towards a return to the pre-1999 system rather than reducing the current 50 per cent discount on capital gains, which critics claim contributed to a surge of property investor activity and pushed prices out of the reach of young home buyers.

The move would likely deliver a small increase in tax and dampen investor activity, which has accelerated to record levels in those parts of the property market dominated by first-time and low-income owner-occupiers.

Match: Melbourne vs BrisbaneDate: Sunday, April 19, 2026Start Time: 3:15pm (AEST)Stadium: MCG

It's a big afternoon at the MCG as Melbourne look to bounce back from last week's surprise loss to Essendon. But to do so they face reigning premiers Brisbane, who are celebrating two milestone games in this one as well.

As if beating Brisbane wasn't hard enough doing it in Lachie Neale's 300th and Josh Dunkley's 200th adds an extra layer of difficulty. That being said, Melbourne's best win of last season was when they took down the Lions by 11 points at the Gabba, so it may not be beyond them either.

Announcement: I'm Co-Hosting HBO Max's Official Pitt Companion Podcast

May I have 30 CCs of ketamine, please? And can someone intubate the patient in Trauma 2? My stethoscope and I are going on a smoke break. In other words: I am expecting another podcast, and I’m delivering it at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. When The Pitt returns for its second season in January, I’ll be co-hosting the official Pitt companion podcast for HBO Max!
