Lucky review – Anya Taylor-Joy’s daft thriller is classic summer viewing

This series about a conwoman fleeing for her life is packed with explosions and preposterous coincidences. It’s bunkum with bells on – but who can resist it in this heat?

Luciana “Lucky” Armstrong (Anya Taylor‑Joy) is on the run, scampering across the US in her fashionably rumpled sateen blouson and prompting much fist-shaking from the hapless feds on her tail. “Lucky!” they bellow, cheeks puffing in disbelief as the incorrigible grifter bounds across the roofs of parked lorries, wriggles out of an exploding car, scams a sobbing gran and sets fire to a goon’s cowboy boots. “Lucky?! Stop!” But, no, too late, she’s off again; capering, conning and smirking her way through the Apple TV crime thriller that bears her pointedly ambiguous nickname.

Lucky S1E1 and S1E2 Recap: “No Shortcuts” and “Make ‘Em Dance” — First Thoughts

The following recap contains spoilers for Lucky S1E1, “No Shortcuts” (written by Jonathan Tropper and directed by Jonathan Van Tulleken) and S1E2, “Make ‘Em Dance” (written by Hilary Bettis and directed by Greg Yaitanes)

There are some actors whose presence in a new project will pique my interest in it. Anya Taylor-Joy is one of those people. Ever since Split, she’s been on my radar, and I haven’t missed anything she’s been in since. So, when I first saw the teaser for her new series Lucky, I knew I was in. Add to that the action and some familiar faces, well, I couldn’t pass this up. Having watched the first two episodes of the limited series, what can I say? I don’t regret my decision to watch it.

‘Lucky’ Review: Anya Taylor-Joy Stars as an Identity-Swapping Con Woman in an Apple TV Thriller With Identity Issues of Its Own

Reese Witherspoon executive produced this seven-episode series, adapted by Jonathan Tropper and featuring Timothy Olyphant, Annette Bening and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

In a good con artist story, the marks are rarely the focal characters, but they’re often just as important.

A grotesquely rich mark is an indication that the swindlers are the heroes and the tale has eat-the-rich undertones, making flimflammery into the last refuge of the desperate everyman.

An overly sympathetic mark is an indication that the swindlers are villains, or at the very least anti-heroes, so desperate that they throw away class solidarity to make a quick buck.

After years of speculation over who might fill Daniel Craig’s brogues, the announcement of the next James Bond finally seems imminent. Reportedly under consideration are names like Callum Turner, Jacob Elordi, Aaron Taylor-Johnson—all solid, though not quite thrilling, choices. But if I could throw just one more into the mix, it would be Anya Taylor-Joy. She’s not the most obvious candidate, to be sure. She isn’t British, though she did spend much of her childhood in London (Elordi is Australian). And among the small-minded, the idea of a female Bond remains unthinkable. Still, any reasonable person who witnesses her performance in the propulsive yet emotionally grounded Apple TV crime thriller Lucky is bound to find themselves thinking of 007.

"Hearst Magazines and AOL may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links."

Anya Taylor-Joy’s acting career has continued to soar, with standout roles in projects like Emma, The Queen’s Gambit, and the upcoming crime miniseries Lucky. Yet despite her growing fame, the actor has remained notably private about her life off the screen.

Taylor-Joy secretly married musician and actor Malcolm McRae in 2022, and revealed the news two years later, in a cheeky Instagram post. Since then, the couple has walked several red carpets, attended award shows and sporting events, and shared a few Instagram selfies together—but they still tend to keep their relationship mostly out of the spotlight.

Lucky: Anya Taylor-Joy is undeniably cool in this explosive tale of cons, revenge and ass-kicking

Leapfrogging the roofs of lorries, slipping in and out of different personae to evade capture, The Queen’s Gambit star is audacious in this reluctant last stand drama

This is a story about a girl named Lucky. Early morning, she wakes up – knock, knock, knock, on the door. It’s the FBI, and they’re pursuing her across the country because she’s stolen $10m. Don’t make the mistake I did, imagining this new Apple TV thriller (from Wednesday), starring Anya Taylor-Joy, to be a dramatisation of the song Lucky by Britney Spears. I’ve tried to find a connection between the two and, as you can see, it’s a stretch.
