A20 Pro speed and efficiency improvements leaked? Not so fast…

You may have seen several news stories out there referencing this Fixed Focus Digital rumor on Weibo, claiming that it shows the speed and power efficiency improvements of Apple’s A20 chip coming to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Ultra next month.

It’s important to note what is going on here, because this is not a leak about A20 improvements; it’s about the new manufacturing process from TSMC that the A20 is suspected of using. And even then, it’s not saying what most reports think it’s saying.

Yes, Apple is expected to be the first large-scale customer to use TSMC’s new 2nm process that uses a new “gate all-around” or GAA manufacturing technique. We said as much in our A20 preview earlier this year.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Release Date: Discounted Day Re-Enters The September Schedule

The Apple iPhone 18 Pro, alongside the 18 Pro Max and the company’s first foldable iPhone, possibly called the iPhone Ultra, are all about to be announced in an event in September, it seems. A new report has now claimed a different date for the keynote which I think is wrong. Here’s when it will really be, along with every other part of the schedule — down to the minute.

This date is the one that is most crucial: once it’s confirmed, every other part of the release schedule slides effortlessly into place.

I’ve been banging on for ages about when I think the keynote will be (read this for details of every part of the release schedule), but a new report from the Australian site Channel News claims to have exclusive information.

What's Coming in September: New iPhones, Apple Watches and More

Apple will introduce at least five new devices at its iPhone-centric event next month, and it's also possible we'll get devices waiting on Siri AI like the Apple TV.

The iPhone 18 Pro is going to look like the iPhone 17 Pro, but with a smaller Dynamic Island. It's getting some internal updates, including a new Wide camera with a variable aperture for more control over lighting and a faster A20 Pro chip built on a new 2nm process. Battery life could improve with the updated chip and an upgraded LTPO+ OLED display, plus Apple could include a more efficient C2 modem and N2 networking chip. Dark Cherry is supposed to be this year's special color, and there will also be a light blue color.

Apple May Delay the iPhone 18 Until 2027 as Premium Models Get Fall Launch

Apple plans to release the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September, while holding off on the standard iPhone 18 until the first quarter of 2027. Image: ChatGPT

Apple may delay the standard iPhone 18 until early 2027 while launching Pro models this fall, marking a major change to its release schedule.

Apple may be about to break one of its longest-running iPhone launch habits.

The company’s supplier Pegatron recently teased a major schedule change for a key smartphone client. As reported by Economic Daily News and MacRumors, Apple plans to stick to a September launch for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, but will hold off on releasing the base iPhone 18 until Q1 2027.

Shortage of DRAM could limit iPhone 18 Pro availability at launch – GSMArena.com news

Continuing the thread of yesterday's report that Apple is short on DRAM for its upcoming iPhones, there's more to the story. Apple could likely have limited iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max availability at launch.

Per Culpium, the iPhone 18 Pro models and the foldable iPhone Ultra will use the new A20 Pro SoC, based on TSMC's N2 node. TSMC has reportedly been able to progress well with volume and yields, but wafers are piling up waiting for DRAM to be packaged on the chips. Apple is scrambling to supply DRAM from Micron, SK Hynix, and Samsung, and is even exploring Chinese-sourced avenues like CMXT. Waiting for DRAM could cause delays when the new iPhone models arrive in a few weeks.

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and foldable ‘iPhone Ultra’ likely to sell out fast due to memory shortages

Apple and its suppliers are scrambling to secure enough DRAM (mobile memory chips) ahead of the expected September 2026 launches of the iPhone 18 series and the foldable iPhone Ultra, according to semiconductor analyst Tim Culpan’s exclusive reporting for Culpium.

With under six weeks to the anticipated debut, assemblers are rushing shipments of DRAM. Apple primarily sources from Micron, with additional supply from SK Hynix and Samsung. Severe shortages due to RAMageddon have left processor wafers sitting idle, awaiting packaging—creating pressure to avoid launch shortages.

The issue stems from Apple’s A20 Pro chips (built on TSMC’s 2nm process), which use Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) packaging that integrates the processor and DRAM at the wafer level. This means DRAM must be available for packaging; unfinished dies cannot simply be stockpiled and completed later. Reports indicate TSMC is holding roughly $1 billion worth of unpackaged Apple processors delayed by the missing memory.

Apple iPhone 18 Pro Release Date September Signaled In Keynote Update

Anticipation is building for Apple's next major event, where the iPhone 18 Pro is expected to be unveiled. Analysts predict the keynote will take place on Wednesday, September 9. Apple consistently holds its iPhone announcements in the first half of September, always avoiding the day after Labor Day. With Labor Day falling on September 7 this year, September 9 is considered the most likely date for the reveal. The official announcement confirming this special event is typically made two weeks in advance, suggesting Wednesday, August 26, as the probable date. Following the keynote, the new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max models are projected to hit stores on Friday, September 18, with a potential foldable iPhone also making an appearance.

The latest iPhone 18 news, leaks, and rumors: Release date, price increases, and color options

Release date: We're expecting the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max to arrive in fall 2026, but rumor has it the iPhone 18 may not arrive until early 2027.

Colors: Possible leaks point to four main color options this year for the Pro models: light blue, silver, dark gray, and dark cherry.

Key upgrades: Besides iOS 27 and the Siri AI beta, we're expecting bigger batteries, camera improvements (including variable aperture for the main camera), and possibly a smaller Dynamic Island.

Pricing: Most new phones are arriving with price increases, and we think a starting price increase is very likely for the new iPhone 18 lineup, sadly.

Apple Rewind: Price upgrade for iPhone, Apple sues OpenAI, and new updates for iOS

The month of July was packed with iPhone rumors, iOS updates, news about smart glasses, and fears of an anticipated price hike.

We're back with another issue of our "Apple Rewind" monthly roundup series on Apple Inc., talking about new launches, speculations, and cool rumors you are waiting to hear. In July, we had a platter of rumors about the iPhone price hike, upcoming features, a foldable iPhone, an OLED iPad mini, and the fate of the iPhone Air.

You can check out our previous issues of the 'Apple Rewind' monthly roundup.

The main camera on the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro Max is expected to get an upgrade: variable aperture support. While it echoes previous rumors, the said feature could drive the prices up. It was reported that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature a Sony IMX905 sensor in its main camera. The feature is “backed by a calibration block that reads actuator data tied to the aperture mechanism from the sensor's non-volatile memory.”

Add the upcoming Neuromancer series to that list, an adaptation of William Gibson’s hugely influential 1984 cyberpunk novel of the same name. The streaming platform released a short teaser during San Diego Comic-Con, and visually it looks fantastic, even based on one minute of footage.

Saturday’s various SDCC panels also gave us a teaser for Prime Video’s Carrie; trailers for Dark Matter S2 and Matchbox: The Movie; and a bit of Marvel casting news.

Apple TV’s cyberpunk series “Neuromancer” hacks into San Diego Comic-Con

Today at Apple TV’s San Diego Comic-Con panel, Callum Turner made a surprise virtual appearance to unveil the first teaser for the highly anticipated new science fiction series “Neuromancer,” based on the award-winning novel of the same name by William Gibson. The 10-episode series stars Turner, Briana Middleton, Mark Strong, Joseph Lee, Peter Sarsgaard and Clémence Poésy, and premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, January 22, 2027, with two episodes, followed by one new episode every Friday through March 19, 2027.

‘Neuromancer’ First Look: Callum Turner Is a Cyberspace Criminal in Teaser for Apple TV Sci-Fi Series

Apple has unveiled the teaser for “Neuromancer,” a sci-fi drama led by Callum Turner, based on the landmark 1984 novel by William Gibson.

The Apple TV series is created by Graham Roland (“Dark Winds”) and JD Dillard (“The Twilight Zone”), who is directing the pilot. An official plot description teases that it “follows a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case (Turner) who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly (Briana Middleton), a razor-girl assassin to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.”

The ten-episode series was greenlit back in early 2024 and will follow Gibson’s famous debut novel, which won the Hugo, Nebula and Philip K. Dick awards. That book led to the Sprawl trilogy, including “Count Zero,” “Mona Lisa Overdrive” and “Burning Chrome.”

Apple overtakes Nvidia as most valuable company as iPhone maker avoids 'capex pitfalls'

What happened: Apple (AAPL) reclaimed the title of the world's most valuable public company from Nvidia (NVDA) as the iPhone maker's stock headed toward a record-high close on Monday.

Shares rose over 1%, giving Apple a market capitalization of roughly $4.94 trillion, per Yahoo Finance data. Nvidia's market cap stood at $4.83 trillion.

What's behind the move: Apple shares have climbed more than 22% year to date, outperforming the "Magnificent Seven" group, as investors increasingly view the company's restrained AI spending as a strength rather than a weakness.

"Once criticized for not spending more on AI, they have been able to avoid some of those capex pitfalls," said Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets.

Apple dethrones Nvidia as the world's most valuable company

Nvidia stock dropped on Monday, costing the chipmaker its position as the world's most valuable company, swapping positions with Apple.

Monday's 5% decline in Nvidia shares extends a volatile stretch for the company and chip makers broadly. The most recent selling in chips was sparked earlier this month by a new AI model from a Chinese startup that investors fears as a new "DeepSeek moment."

Monday's decline followed a report that Nvidia is in talks to provide $250 billion of financing for OpenAI's data centers, reviving fears of circular dealmaking and huge capex spending, which investors have become increasingly wary of.

Nvidia and Apple swapped positions in Monday's session as Nvidia stock fell to a market cap to about $4.77 trillion. Apple stock, meanwhile, rose 2%, hitting a market cap of roughly $5 trillion.

iPhone 18 Pro Release Date: Apple’s Strategic Decision To Defeat Android

Apple's September launch of the iPhone 18 Pro is a calculated strategic move to outmaneuver Android competitors, including Samsung and Google. This timing allows Apple to observe rival launches earlier in the summer. While Samsung and Google establish higher price points for premium new flagships due to rising component costs, Apple benefits from having this new, elevated pricing baseline already in place, mitigating potential "sticker shock" for the iPhone 18 Pro. Furthermore, Apple's unified iOS 27 rollout provides a stable, day-one experience across all devices, in contrast to Android 17's fragmented adoption. The later release date allows Apple to gather crucial market intelligence, refine its offerings, and dominate the crucial holiday sales period.

Apple class action settlement could pay you money. See who's eligible

Some iPhone owners could be eligible for a payout from a class action lawsuit that Apple agreed to settle this week.

The tech giant has agreed to a $250 million settlement in a case that alleged it deceived consumers over artificial intelligence enhancements in new iPhones in 2024.

The lawsuit accused Apple of touting new AI technology, including Siri enhancements, while advertising the iPhone 16 at the time, but the device did not contain the elements when it was released, according to court filings.

Apple denied the allegations in the lawsuit. The company said in a statement to USA TODAY that it resolved the suit in an effort to continue "delivering the most innovative products and services to our users.”

Apple has reached a $250 million settlement over a class-action lawsuit filed over claims it misled customers regarding Siri’s AI capabilities.

The settlement covers approximately 37 million devices, including all iPhone 16 models and some iPhone 15 models. Customers who are eligible to file a claim will be notified via email or mail.

In March 2025, a California man named Peter Landsheft initially filed the lawsuit, claiming that Apple in 2024 “launched a pervasive marketing campaign across all media platforms to promote its latest iPhone 16 model, spotlighting what it branded as the groundbreaking ‘Apple Intelligence’ suite of features, including significant AI-driven enhancements to Siri.”

Apple to pay $250m to iPhone buyers over AI features lawsuit

Apple has agreed to pay some iPhone buyers a collective $250m (£184m) to end a lawsuit accusing the company of misleading people about new artificial intelligence (AI) features and capabilities.

In a settlement filed Tuesday in California federal court, Apple did not admit any wrongdoing, but agreed to a deal that will resolve claims in a large consolidated class action lawsuit filed last year.

It accused Apple of false advertising around its AI features on the iPhone, which the company called Apple Intelligence, including an enhancement of its Siri voice assistant.

Apple will pay between $25 and $95 to people in the US who bought an iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 between June 2024 and March 2025.

In Rare Move, Apple Releases iOS 18 'DarkSword' Patch for Newer iPhones

Our team tests, rates, and reviews more than 1,500 products each year to help you make better buying decisions and get more from technology.

If you’ve been clinging to iOS 18 to avoid Apple’s Liquid Glass interface, you may be aware that it comes with a security trade-off that exposes your iPhone to vulnerabilities already fixed in iOS 26. But in some good news, Apple is rolling out a fresh version of iOS 18 that will protect newer iPhones from the "DarkSword" attack.

DarkSword can remotely install malware on iPhones running iOS 18.4 to 18.7. Apple released a patch in December via iOS 18.7.3, but only for the iPhone XS and XR, which don't support iOS 26. Everyone else was encouraged to upgrade to iOS 26 to avoid DarkSword.

'DarkSword' Attack Is Now Targeting Vulnerable iPhones Via Phishing Emails

Our team tests, rates, and reviews more than 1,500 products each year to help you make better buying decisions and get more from technology.

The "DarkSword" attack, which can spread malware to unpatched iPhones, is now targeting potential victims through phishing emails.

Email security provider Proofpoint warned of the threat after detecting the emails in customers' inboxes. They feature a link that leads to a malicious site hosting DarkSword, which abuses a range of iOS software vulnerabilities to remotely attack iPhones running iOS 18.4 to 18.7.

The phishing emails underscore the threat of DarkSword, an attack that was originally used by a handful of shadowy groups for cyberespionage and cybercrime. But last week, someone leaked the attack online, making it easy for anyone to adopt and potentially improve upon.
