Carroll appoints Allan loyalist to new-look cabinet

Premier Ben Carroll will cut the number of ministers in his cabinet in what he says is a simple demonstration of his commitment to prioritising Victorian taxpayers’ money.

Following the resignations of Jacinta Allan and her Left faction loyalists Lily D’Ambrosio and Harriet Shing last week, Mordialloc MP Tim Richardson was on Monday promoted to cabinet, bringing the number of positions from 22 to 20. The remaining two cabinet positions will remain unfilled until after the state election.

The move also ensures Labor’s dominant Left faction, which split over last Tuesday’s leadership change, does not descend into further infighting over who should fill the two vacant positions.

A week after his elevation to premier and four months out from an election, the priorities of the Carroll government are becoming clearer

It’s been exactly one week since Ben Carroll became Victorian premier, promising to differentiate himself from his predecessors Jacinta Allan and Daniel Andrews. With his new cabinet sworn in at Government House on Tuesday morning, Victorians are beginning to see what that actually looks like.

This was far more than tinkering at the edges. Four months out from an election, Carroll has made cuts and completely overhauled portfolios, and in turn, the priorities of his government.

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll has named his new frontbench after taking the Labor leadership from Jacinta Allan last week.

His ministry includes a new portfolio of Minister for Artificial Intelligence, which will be filled by former police minister Anthony Carbines.

There's no longer a Minister for Transport Infrastructure and the Suburban Rail Loop.

New Victorian premier Ben Carroll has announced the make-up of his cabinet, including a new ministry dedicated to ethical and responsible artificial intelligence development.

Jaclyn Symes, an ally of former premier Jacinta Allan, has lost the treasury to Colin Brooks, who will also take on industrial relations.

The University of Melbourne has appointed a new vice chancellor to replace Emma Johnston, who died late last year aged 52.

The prestigious institution has poached Griffith University vice chancellor Carolyn Evans to lead the $3.6 billion organisation, which has been helmed by former top federal public servant Glyn Davis on an interim basis since Johnston’s death in December.

The university’s chancellor, Jane Hansen, said the appointment had come after a time “of profound loss and transition” for the state’s most prestigious tertiary institution.

PM appoints Greg Moriarty as next ambassador to the United States

Anthony Albanese announces Greg Moriarty to the appointment. (ABC News: Ian Cutmore)

Defence department boss Greg Moriarty will be the next Australian ambassador to the US, replacing outgoing ambassador Kevin Rudd.

Mr Moriarty has served as the Defence secretary for nearly a decade, and was previously chief of staff to then-prime minister Malcolm Turnbull.

The secretary has also held senior roles in counter terrorism and has served as the ambassador to Indonesia and Iran.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced his recommendation of Mr Moriarty while speaking on ABC Insiders.

"I know Mr Moriarty very well, and I have been impressed by the dignified way in which he handles himself," Mr Albanese said.

The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, has revealed that veteran public servant and former chief of staff to Malcolm Turnbull, Greg Moriarty, will be recommended to the governor general to be Australia’s ambassador to the US, replacing the outgoing ambassador, Kevin Rudd.

He is I think an outstanding Australian public servant. He served as an ambassador to Iran and to Indonesia. He’s played a role in Papua New Guinea as well. He was the first, appointed the first counter-terrorism tsar if you look in 2015. He’s been a former chief of staff to a Liberal prime minister. He has served both Labor and Coalition governments and he’s been of the secretary of the Department of Defence and the Aukus deal is central to our relationship with the US. And he’s in a very strong position to be on top of all of that detail.

Defence department secretary Greg Moriarty will become the next Australian ambassador to the United States, replacing outgoing ambassador Kevin Rudd in the key diplomatic posting.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Moriarty’s appointment on Sunday morning, describing him as a dignified and “outstanding Australian public servant”.

Speculation about the next ambassador has been rife since Rudd this month made a surprise decision to step down from the prestigious role a year ahead of schedule. In recent years, the plum diplomatic postings to the United States and United Kingdom have usually been handed to former politicians from the party in power as opposed to career diplomats or former bureaucrats.
