Doctors warn of serious risks as peptide products gain popularity online

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Peptides are being promoted online for everything from weight loss to anti-aging as they become one of the biggest trends in the wellness world.

The FDA is expected to weigh easing restrictions later this summer, but doctors warn some of these products may come with serious risks.

Peptides are being marketed as a quick fix for weight loss, anti-aging and muscle growth on platforms from TikTok to targeted ads.

“A peptide is a chain of amino acids … almost like a precursor to proteins,” said Dr. Giancarlo Pierantoni.

Some peptides, like GLP-1 medications, are FDA-approved and prescribed by doctors. But others are showing up in what experts call a “gray market.”

What Peptides Can Tell Us About the Future of Beauty

Ever heard of a peptide? The internet’s latest biohacking craze, these are the injectables promising clear skin, bigger muscles, and lower body fat with heaps of energy. If user content on social media is to be believed, they seem like a beauty fix-all. But upon closer inspection, there are some murky truths.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, also known as microproteins, which your body naturally creates, to regulate processes like hormone release, metabolism, immune response, and tissue repair. Scientists can artificially replicate these peptides to mimic their natural properties, the most prominent examples of this being GLP-1s (glucagon-like peptide-1), the weight-loss drugs, or diabetes drug insulin. Those peptides are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But many of the peptides hawked by manosphere personalities and other influencers, are not approved for human consumption.

Sydney council rates are going up. Blame the fuel crisis

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

Global instability is set to hit NSW ratepayers, with councils planning sharp increases to bin collection fees and rates charges as soaring fuel costs strain budgets.

From Sydney’s suburbs to the state’s far west, councils say a perfect storm of rising diesel prices and structural funding constraints is driving up the cost of delivering essential services – with households set to feel the impact on their rates bills from July.

The conflict in Iran – which has sent the price of fuel, especially diesel, skyrocketing – has coincided with councils finalising draft 2026-27 budgets.

Rate rises, spending cuts and cost blowouts: Councils squeezed by fuel crisis

Councils like Mount Barker District Council are impacting by the soaring prices of fuel and bitumen. (ABC News)

Some South Australian councils may hike rates above inflation this year as they grapple with cost blowouts, spending cuts and project delays caused by the fuel crisis.

One council is warning that the cost of some of its infrastructure projects could blow out by up to 50 per cent, while another says it will face "difficult financial trade-offs" if the crisis is prolonged.

The state's 68 councils will adopt their annual budgets before the start of next financial year.

Some South Australian ratepayers could soon be hit with rate increases above inflation as councils grapple with cost blowouts, spending cuts and project delays attributed to higher fuel prices.

Why Snowflake (SNOW) Shares Are Falling Today

Shares of cloud data platform provider Snowflake SNOW fell 10.2% in the afternoon session after a broader sell-off in the enterprise software sector hit the company.

The decline was part of a sector-wide repricing event, spurred by growing concerns that the emergence of “agentic AI” from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI threatened the traditional Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business model.

Snowflake’s shares are quite volatile and have had 19 moves greater than 5% over the last year. But moves this big are rare even for Snowflake and indicate this news significantly impacted the market’s perception of the business.

The previous big move we wrote about was 1 day ago when the stock dropped 8.5% on the news that reports of a ceasefire breach in the Middle East spiked market volatility as fears grew that a fragile U.S.-Iran truce would unravel.

Is SNOW Stock Falling on AI Fear or a SaaS Valuation Reset?

SNOW stock closed at $132.24 on April 9, 2026, down 11.83%, but the selloff occurred during a broader software-sector drawdown, not a broad-market liquidation.

The primary concern was the impact of AI, heightened by Anthropic's recent product cycle and increasing worries that AI agents could erode traditional SaaS pricing power.

Snowflake's own fiscal 2026 numbers do not yet show a same-company demand break: Q4 revenue was $1.28 billion, product revenue was $1.23 billion, and remaining performance obligations reached $9.77 billion, up 42% year over year.

Snowflake's $9.77 billion in RPO represents about 2.2 years of FY2026 product revenue, which does not align with a business experiencing immediate displacement.

Management also reaffirmed FY2027 guidance on March 31, 2026, including $5.66 billion in full-year product revenue.

Australia is opening its chequebook to outbid rivals in a global scramble for fuel, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese flies to Singapore seeking deals to secure extra shipments and avert a looming shortfall.

Despite early hopes that a fragile two-week ceasefire in Iran would unclog oil shipping routes and bring relief at the petrol pump in the coming weeks, Australia remains dangerously exposed to the risk of a supply crunch unless the government can negotiate extra deliveries of petrol, diesel and jet fuel.

On Thursday, Albanese said the government had secured the support of the nation’s biggest fuel importers, Viva Energy and Ampol, to participate in a scheme to urgently boost shipments to Australia.

Global oil markets could take as long as a year to return to something like pre-Iran war normality even if the conflict ended tomorrow, leading experts warn.

Hopes for an immediate restart of shipping through the strait of Hormuz have been dashed after Israel bombarded Lebanon shortly after the announcement of a two-week cease-fire between the US and Iran, with Iranian media reporting traffic through the strait had been halted in response.

VIDEO: Australia negotiating with overseas fuel suppliers as fuel crisis continues

The apparent official standstill in hostilities not even two days old punctuated by bombs with Israel keeping its finger on the trigger in Lebanon, launching a wave of deadly attacks.

JD VANCE, US VICE-PRESIDENT: The Iranians thought that the ceasefire was going to include Lebanon and it just didn’t. We never made that promise.

ALI BAHREINI, IRANIAN UN AMBASSADOR:  If the Israel attacks continue against Lebanon, it will have some consequences.

JACOB GREBER:  Iran has maintained its blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and its defacto toll.

ANTHONY ALBANESE, PRIME MINISTER:  Of course it is a fragile peace, but we want it to lead to an agreement. The Australian Government also firmly believes that this has to apply to Lebanon as well.

Analysis reveals dozens of lenders are shielding borrowers from full RBA hikes

RBA Governor Michele Bullock has announced two rate rises this year. Picture: Gaye Gerard

Aussie borrowers have been sweating on the movements of the RBA this year. First they hiked rates in February, then they were forced to do it again in March after inflation continued to gather steam on the back of global uncertainty and an oil supply crisis.

Then, we were horrified to hear economists predicting further hikes in the months ahead. Perhaps even another three this year.

But an analysis of more than 100 lenders has revealed that not all bank customers are suffering equally.

Most of us would assume that all lenders have passed on both rate hikes in full to borrowers. Well, most have.

Bridgerton puts female romance between Francesca and Michaela at heart of season five

We've barely recovered from season four of Bridgerton, but now details of series five have been announced – with a new romance to set hearts aflutter.

Every season focuses on one central romance featuring a member of the Bridgerton family – and it's the turn of the reserved and somewhat mysterious Francesca, played by Hannah Dodd.

She will have a love story with Lord Kilmartin's cousin Michaela, played by Masali Baduza, and a teaser trailer released on Tuesday showed the pair touching hands.

While same-sex romance has featured in Netflix's hit period drama previously, this will mark the first time it's been part of the central storyline.

Northampton hold off late Newcastle fightback in thriller to reclaim top spot

On the face of it, not a lot to see here. The league leaders return to the top of the table with a bonus-point win against the team placed bottom. But don’t you believe it. Newcastle may have shipped 60 the last time they played a Prem game here, but they pushed the Saints all the way.

Northampton, it must be said, were about as far from full strength as can be. George Furbank was given his latest run-out at full-back, but otherwise none of their myriad England internationals were present. They will consider this a smart collection of the full five points without them. And they may have to get used to some of the absences, Alex Coles and Alex Mitchell both rated by Phil Dowson as likely to be out for “a decent amount of time”, which he clarified meant more than a month.

The Prem: Northampton 28-27 Newcastle – Saints edge to narrow win

Northampton moved top of the Prem table with win over Newcastle

Northampton Saints regained top spot in the Prem table with a hard-fought and often unconvincing 28-27 victory over bottom club Newcastle Red Bulls.

In a performance which displayed layers of rust as the domestic league competition returned for the first time since January, it was the visitors who emerged as the better side on balance of play.

Yet after holding on to edge a tight contest with four tries apiece, it was Saints who emerged with a bonus point win, enough for them move above Bath at the top.

Is the booming housing market party winding down? If the recent falls in auction clearance rates are an early indication, the answer is yes.

We are a long way from calling this a buyers’ market, but a sharp deterioration in clearance rates – the percentage of properties that go to auction that are sold – is an early signal that over the past couple of weeks, buyers have developed the yips.

In the past two weeks, clearance rates have significantly weakened and in the major markets of Sydney and Melbourne, prices are struggling to move up.
