Reform to ask for Clacton byelection to be held on 6 August after Farage resignation

Constituents to vote in contest being boycotted by major parties over financial scandal surrounding Reform leader

Reform UK will request that the Clacton byelection be held on 6 August, the party has said, after Nigel Farage’s decision to resign from the seat.

The Reform UK leader, who has represented the Essex constituency since the 2024 general election, said on Tuesday he was standing down and would put himself forward again in what he has sought to portray as a “people versus the establishment” contest.

Farage’s attempts to use the poll to shake off a deepening scandal over financial gifts he has received appears to have backfired as his main rivals announced they would boycott the byelection. At present, only the novelty candidate Count Binface has decided to stand against him.

Count Binface: The candidate wanting to stand in by-election against Farage

After the announcement that Reform UK leader Nigel Farage would quit his Clacton constituency and stand in a by-election, the serial election candidate Count Binface posted online: "Game on, Nige."

Jonathan Harvey, the man who dresses as a bin, spoke to the BBC's Justin Webb and Nick Robinson on the Today programme on Wednesday.

He is one of few people saying he will run against Farage in the contest after Labour, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats all said they would not field candidates.

"Get at least one affordable house, nationalising Adele and bring back Ceefax", Binface told the BBC when asked about his policies.

Nigel Farage’s donations: four key claims fact checked by an expert in political finance

It was prototypical Nigel Farage. A cryptic announcement that a statement is about to be made, a wholesale hijacking of the news agenda hinting at a “will he won’t he?” state of affairs, followed by a blistering attack on “the establishment” (or, at least, Farage’s conception of the establishment), and a big finish – he is resigning as MP for Clacton, therefore triggering a by-election – in which he will stand once more (though it appears the other main parties will not).

This news does rather bury the bigger story, which most would agree is actually the allegations being made about his finances; and particularly that he accepted gifts worth millions from businessmen.

Big drops of rain returned just as the toss neared its completion, with the ground staff swiftly bringing the covers back on. For the record, Riyan Parag won the toss as Rajasthan Royals elected to bowl first against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. A battle of two unchanged sides will bring Guwahati's commitments to a close in IPL 2026.

Parag cited rain and moisture on what should've otherwise been a dry surface as one of the reasons behind his decision. Royals left out Tushar Deshpande for fellow-seamer Brijesh Sharma in their bowl-first XI. with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi set to come in as the Impact Player.

Trump may ask allies for help in Iran. Voters say that’s a good move

Washington | Nearly half of Americans and two-thirds of Republican voters say allies who publicly back a military operation should also send their own troops, according to a new poll that raises tough questions about how the Albanese government manages the US relationship during the war in Iran.

The survey of 1000 voters conducted by YouGov for the Australian strategic advisory firm Bondi Partners found 44 per cent agreed or strongly agreed with the view, while fewer than one in five (19 per cent) disagreed, putting the Albanese government’s posture at odds with many Americans. The balance was neutral (27 per cent) or unsure (10 per cent).

Ghost of Gallipoli: US warships cannot control the Strait of Hormuz

One factor should dominate global strategic policymaking today: that the Strait of Hormuz will re-open only with the consent of the Iranian government. No amount of US naval power can either force passage or safeguard transit.

So Raelene Lockhorst’s Strategist article on 9 March on the effect of its closure on Australia should be taken with deadly seriousness, now, by Australian policy makers.

On the surface, access through the Strait of Hormuz appears to be a naval challenge. And on the surface, the United States Navy has the upper hand. It has almost a fifth of its carrier fleet in the region—the USS Abraham Lincoln and the USS Gerald R Ford—plus a huge escort force. The US military can eliminate all Iranian maritime activity. To date, it appears to have sunk 30 Iranian vessels.

US would escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, Trump says — As it happened

US President Donald Trump has said the United States would escort vessels through the Strait of Hormuz if needed.

Earlier, non-essential Australian officials posted to Lebanon were directed to leave due to the "deteriorating security situation" in the region.

But before we wrap up, here’s a recap of the key developments from the Middle East today.

We’ll leave our coverage there for now, but you can stay across the latest developments on our live blog as the situation continues to unfold.

Pakistan ask India to bat in big Under-19 World Cup contest; Deepesh and Baloch come in

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Pakistan won a crucial toss in Bulawayo as they looked to beat India by a significant margin in order to make the semi-finals of the Under-19 World Cup. Pakistan, with four points in their bag, were two behind the undefeated India.

A win or tie is enough for India to go through, but Pakistan also need to overcome the difference in net run-rate: 1.484 to 3.337. The exact requirements will be updated once India have batted, but just an indicator: Pakistan need to chase a target of 251 in about 33.2 overs to make the semi-final.
