Charlton Athletic 0-1 Wrexham: Ollie Rathbone goal sinks Addicks

Ollie Rathbone has scored six league goals this season despite missing the first four months of the Championship campaign through injury

Wrexham kept pace with their rivals for the Championship play-offs as Ollie Rathbone's fine first-half strike earned them victory over Charlton Athletic at the Valley.

The superb 30th minute effort – Rathbone's sixth in the Championship since returning from injury in December – ensured Phil Parkinson's side retained a four-point cushion over the sides chasing a top-six spot.

But the hosts could have every right to feel hard done by after carving out the game's best chances, only to fail to find the net and make it four games without a win.

The Athletic: Brian Scalabrine not surprised by Cooper Flagg's ascent: 'He's the same kid'

"His ability to play through contact is the same as when he was 14," Scalabrine said of the Mavericks' 19-year-old rookie.

DALLAS — Wanting to test his young pupil’s mettle, Matt MacKenzie phoned a friend in New England.

MacKenzie, a basketball trainer from Maine, reached out to Brian Scalabrine, the ex-NBA player turned color commentator for the Boston Celtics whose organized pickup games in Beantown were notoriously competitive. Several current and future Division I players participated in it.

Mavericks’ climb back to contention around Cooper Flagg might be shorter than you think

Prohibited from answering questions directly about an Anthony Davis trade to the Wizards that was not yet official, Mavs coach Jason Kidd made it clear that a team building around Cooper Flagg can have a bright future. And in the very near future, too.

Make no mistake, the best thing that Mavericks interim GM Mark Riccardi did in sending Davis to Washington in a multi-player deal before the league’s trade deadline was clear cap room. Get excited about the players at your own risk.

Three are in the final year of their deals so their future here is as “expiring contracts,” not role players. Guard A.J. Johnson might be a nice addition to the rotation as Max Christie was in the last Davis trade that was not so popular in these parts. And the picks Dallas receives should best be viewed as five second-rounders, given that, along with three true second-round picks, Dallas is getting Oklahoma City’s first in June (likely between 28 and 30) and a Golden State pick that is top-20 protected in 2030.

Cooper Flagg Continues To Silence Doubters

Some people still doubt Flagg, but that’s getting more and more difficult.

There are apparently some people who still think that Cooper Flagg is the product of hype, the latest Great White Hope, but the facts on the court show how lazy that sort of thinking is.

Because Flagg is just killing it. These are some stats from the last three games:

Over his last 10 games, Flagg is getting 24 ppg, 7.5 rebounds and 4 assists. He’s shooting 50% too.

Lazy thinkers think it’s all media hype or entitlement, but Naji Marshall, who actually plays in the NBA and who is currently a Maverick, says he wants to play his entire career there because “I want to play with Cooper Flagg my whole motherf*****g career. That’s my dog, and he’s gonna create history. And to be part of that would be unbelievable.”

PORTLAND, Ore. — If there is a place to start when chronicling the rise of Deni Avdija into this season’s breakout star of the NBA, he figures it should be back home in Israel during his youth. The only problem: It involves a tale he doesn’t like to relive.

    Stoppage-time defeat at Pompey

Harvey Knibbs looked to have secured a well-deserved point for Nathan Jones’ side in the sixth minute of added time, but Portsmouth struck back immediately from the restart, with substitute Min-Hyeok Yang finding the net.

Jones made five changes from the side that faced Norwich City on Boxing Day and, for large spells, the Addicks looked the better team, but they were unable to capitalise on the chances that came their way.

Charlton started with real energy and intent, winning a corner inside the opening 14 seconds. Charlie Kelman kept Pompey goalkeeper Nicolas Schmid busy early on. In the 13th minute, Tyreece Campbell found Kelman in the penalty area, but the striker’s effort was straight at Schmid. A minute later, Schmid got down well to his left to push away Kelman’s placed shot after Miles Leaburn had picked him out inside the box.

The Athletic: Victor Wembanyama and the ‘ethical’ Spurs have earned the right to raise the bar

In praising the Spurs' 'ethical basketball,' Wembanyama made a statement that said more about his team's progress than any opponent.

Editor’s Note: Read more NBA coverage from The Athletic here. The views on this page do not necessarily reflect the views of the NBA or its teams.

LAS VEGAS — How do you define ethics? A subjective measurement of what’s right and what’s wrong, it’s entered the NBA lexicon over the last year as opponents and fans have lobbed complaints of foul baiting and overtly scrappy defense at the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder.

Winning a title requires grit, determination and a willingness to push core principles to their limits. Whatever you may think of the Thunder’s approach to winning, it’s working to historic proportions.

Chet Holmgren Sounds Off On Victor Wembanyama 'Rivalry' Label; Says They Never Speak To Each Other

Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama are two young bigs with the potential to become future Hall of Famers in the NBA. But it seems the league was very quick to label them as rivals.

In the initial phase of their careers, they embraced it as a challenge. But a recent fact has come to light that would make anyone question whether or not this truly is a rivalry.

Chet Holmgren was recently interviewed by ESPN’s Malika Andrews, where he addressed his rivalry with Victor Wembanyama.

“I don’t think it’s ever been up to players or teams to declare rivalries. So, you’re asking the wrong person,” said Holmgren on whether he considers it a rivalry.

Victor Wembanyama hating the Thunder is so great for the NBA

If there's one man who could prevent the juggernaut Oklahoma City Thunder from having an extended "super" dynasty, it's Victor Wembanyama. That is not meant as disrespect to someone like Nikola Jokić. But as he turns 31 years old this February, he, a resurgent Jamal Murray, and the rest of the Denver Nuggets will realistically only duel with the Thunder for the NBA's crown for a few more years. They're a worthy adversary, but they won't be a roadblock the Thunder will have to overcome indefinitely.

It's different with Wembanyama. I don't just say that because he won't even be "feeling 22" until this January. I say it because his ceiling as a potential all-time talent — a 7-foot-4 basketball demon who shoots well from the 3-point line at volume and who could be the best rim protector ever at the same time — feels so untapped. I say it because we're likely only still scratching the surface of what Wembanyama can be at his absolute best. (Also, he might literally still be growing: height-wise, I mean.) The same sentiment applies to his burgeoning, upstart San Antonio Spurs, who are quickly learning how to win while building a culture that can last.
