Atlanta Hawks Release Intriguing Final Injury Report With No. 5 Seed at Stake

The Atlanta Hawks didn’t just release their final injury report — they may have revealed their playoff strategy.

With the No. 5 seed still at stake entering their regular-season finale against the Miami Heat, Atlanta listed multiple key players as out, a move that raises immediate questions about whether the team is prioritizing rest — or positioning — ahead of the postseason.

According to the official NBA injury report, Atlanta listed several core contributors as out, including Jalen Johnson (rest), CJ McCollum (rest) and Nickeil Alexander-Walker (toe), among others. The move effectively signals a strategic approach to the postseason — one that could influence the team’s first-round opponent.

Dyson Daniels Injury: Iffy for regular-season finale

Daniels is listed as questionable for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Heat due to a left great toe sprain.

Daniels may have picked up the injury during the Hawks' 124-102 win over the Cavaliers on Friday, when he played 29 minutes and finished with 13 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds and two steals for his second triple-double of the regular season. If Daniels is unable to play Sunday, then Jonathan Kuminga (knee), Corey Kispert and Zaccharie Risacher would be candidates to enter the Hawks' starting lineup.

Blazers Host CJ McCollum, Atlanta Hawks Tonight

The Portland Trail Blazers look to avenge their blowout loss to the Golden State Warriors in their next matchup against Jalen Johnson and the Atlanta Hawks tonight. This will be the first of two meetings against Atlanta this season, and the first time in eight years that the Blazers will face a Trae Young-less Hawks squad.

There are three certainties in life: Death, taxes, and the Hawks being in the Play-In. Following an offseason trade for Kristaps Porzingis, and the signings of (former Blazer) Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard, pundits and fans had high hopes for the new-look Hawks. Led by burgeoning forward Jalen Johnson, the Hawks seem poised to escape their eternal relegation to the 7-10 seeds. So far, fate remains victorious. In 42 games, the Hawks are 20-22, marred by continued injuries to the recently-traded Young, and the chronically-battered Porzingis.

    Tiny Nick's Gambling Picks 01/15

NBA (0.75 Unit) Atlanta Hawks -4 @ Portland Trail Blazers (-110; Odds via Fanduel): 9:00 PM CT on KUNP

It’s obvious that the Hawks are still adjusting to life without Trae Young while adding CJ McCollum into the fold. They’ve had two wildly different results the past two games, looking amazing in Golden State and then getting blown out by the Lakers on Tuesday night. But that puts them in a good bounce back spot here against a Portland team that’s very shorthanded.

The Blazers should be without Deni Avdija again tonight, and likely Jerami Grant as well, forcing a lineup construction that has not gone well for them. Portland really struggles to score without Avdija, and the excellent defensive backcourt of Atlanta will make that even tougher. This is already a massive shooting mismatch both overall and from deep, plus the Hawks are one of the league’s best ATS teams in road games, so I’ll lay the short number expecting a big bounce back performance.

Best bets for NBA, NHL, college basketball games on Thursday, Jan. 15

It's been nearly nine years since the Atlanta Hawks posted a victory in Portland. Head coach Quin Snyder is hoping this is the year the drought finally ends.

The Hawks (20-22) conclude their four-game road trip when they visit the Moda Center to take on the Portland Trail Blazers (19-22) at 10 p.m. ET on Thursday. Atlanta has lost its last eight contests in "The City of Roses," last winning when it outlasted the Trail Blazers 109-104 in overtime on Feb. 13, 2017.

After beginning their trek with triumphs over the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors, the Hawks were trounced 141-116 by the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. Portland is looking to avoid a third consecutive setback after losing to the New York Knicks 123-114 at home on Sunday and the Warriors 119-97 on the road two days later.

Atlanta Hawks have 'explored' path to trade for Mavericks' Anthony Davis

Dallas Mavericks star forward/center Anthony Davis has been at the center of trade talks all season. Cooper Flagg has blossomed faster than anyone expected, despite being the first overall pick, and that has the team needing to prioritize his timeline. This is the last year that the Mavericks control their first-round pick, and Anthony Davis isn't getting any younger, cheaper, or more durable.

Trying to find teams interested in Anthony Davis may be a challenge, though. He's playing at a really high level, especially recently, but Rich Paul (his agent, CEO of Klutch Sports) will want an extension for him, and he's already making a lot of money for someone who can rarely stay healthy.

Would a move for Davis work for Raptors?

Mavericks hear from Hawks, Raptors, Bulls on Anthony Davis, but only at ‘bargain’

Several teams have checked in on Mavericks star Anthony Davis, but they are doing so with a clear hope that the price comes down.

According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, the Hawks, Raptors, and Bulls have all made inquiries with Dallas about Davis. The common theme is that those teams would like to land him “at a bargain.”

“Teams like Atlanta and Toronto and Chicago that have called about Anthony Davis, they want to get him for cheap,” Fischer said. “That’s not what Dallas has any interest in doing. They want to sell him for the type of value Nico Harrison thought he was worth when he traded for him for Luka Doncic.”

Enjoy the best of Friday’s 7-game schedule with the NBA.com live blog, featuring all of the meaningful moments, performances, observations, news, notes and highlights.

Detroit is outscoring Atlanta 23-12 in the second quarter, using a 12-4 run to take a 57-45 lead with 5:12 left before halftime. The Pistons’ bench trio of Isaiah Stewart, Ronald Holland II and Daniss Jenkins all have 8 points apiece.

Hawks vs. Celtics, Timberwolves vs. Warriors among top games, best bets for Dec. 12

Cade Cunningham is undoubtedly the cheese that tops the Detroit Pistons' pizza, but have you seen what Jalen Duren has done this season? The 22-year-old specimen has had a breakout season, averaging a career-high in scoring (18.8 points per game) while emerging as a potential NBA All-Star. He's a large (6-foot-10, 250 pounds to be exact) reason why the Pistons (19-5) own the best record in the Eastern Conference and second-best record in the entire league.

If you haven't seen Duren yet this season, you'll get a chance on Friday when he and Detroit take on the Atlanta Hawks at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
