A strong preliminary magnitude 7.6 earthquake has struck near Tonga in the South Pacific Ocean, prompting coastal evacuations but no wider tsunami warnings.

The United States Geological Survey said the quake struck on Tuesday at a depth of 237km.

Earthquakes at shallower depths are felt more strongly at the surface.

The jolt was centred at sea, 153km west of Neiafu, the second-largest town in the island nation.

A major, 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck in the South Pacific Ocean on Tuesday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The temblor happened at 12:37 a.m. Eastern about 103 miles west of Neiafu, Tonga, data from the agency shows.

U.S.G.S. data earlier reported that the magnitude was 7.6.

As seismologists review available data, they may revise the earthquake’s reported magnitude. Additional information collected about the earthquake may also prompt U.S.G.S. scientists to update the shake-severity map.

An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that follows a larger one in the same general area. Aftershocks are typically minor adjustments along the portion of a fault that slipped at the time of the initial earthquake.

After months of teasing, Kevin Parker has confirmed an Australian tour before the end of 2026, bringing his visionary project back to Australian shores with arena shows in Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Perth this October.

The announcement follows the release of Deadbeat, Parker’s first Tame Impala album in five years, which also earned him his first solo Grammy earlier this year.

The record spawned singles including “End of Summer”, “Loser” and breakout hit “Dracula”, which marked Parker’s biggest US radio debut to date and placed at No. 3 in triple j’s Hottest 100 of 2025.

Tame Impala Expands 2026 Australian Tour

Extra shows have been announced for Tame Impala's tour after pre-sale allocation was immediately exhausted in three cities.

Following extraordinary demand for tickets, resulting in pre-sale allocation immediately selling out in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane, extra dates have been added to Tame Impala’s 2026 Australian tour.

Second shows have been confirmed in all three cities. The three extra shows will take place at Brisbane Entertainment Centre on Sunday, 11 October, Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena on Thursday, 15 October, and Sydney’s Qudos Bank Arena on Tuesday, 20 October.

Tickets for the new shows will be available from 11 am AEDT in today’s pre-sale. After the pre-sale concludes, general sale tickets for the three additional dates – as well as the four shows initially announced yesterday – will be available on Friday, 27 February, at 11 am local time.

Hewitt lashes tennis officials after World No.1s cop bizarre 'ban' at Aus Open

Aussie tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt has taken aim at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) for seemingly blocking players from wearing 'Whoop' devices at the Australian Open. Tennis fans and commentators are once again questioning the rules at the Australian Open after World No.1 players Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz were asked to remove the item that is ambiguously banned on Sunday.

Alcaraz beat 19th seed Tommy Paul 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 7-5, setting up a quarter-final showdown with Aussie Alex de Minaur. De Minaur later dispatched 10th seed Alexander Bublik 6-4 6-1 6-1 in just an hour and 32 minutes.

On Sunday afternoon, Alcaraz was troubled by Paul as the Spanish star was pushed all the way by his American opponent. And Alcaraz was troubled before the match even started when he was asked to remove his 'Whoop' fitness band.

The first month of the year is usually a special time for Perth's Linda Inglis and her family and this January is already one to savour.

The Caramut-raised Western Australian, whose husband Stuart grew up in Mortlake, was court-side in Melbourne on Tuesday, January 20, when their daughter Maddy sealed her spot in the second round of the Australian Open women's singles.

The 28-year-old world number 168 defeated fellow Aussie and good friend Kim Birrell 7-6 6-7 6-4 in a three-set epic under lights at John Cain Arena.

In-form young wildcard Taylah Preston and inspired wildcard Maddison Inglis have led the women's home hopes to their best start to an Australian Open campaign in 34 years.

Mighty victories for veteran James Duckworth and never-say-die Dane Sweeny on day three also guaranteed the bumper Australian contingent its equal-most successful opening to the Melbourne Park major this century.

But Preston's life-changing 6-3 2-6 6-3 victory over Zhang Shuai and Inglis's epic, three-hour, past-midnight 7-6 (8-6) 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 win over compatriot Kim Birrell ensured six Australian females will feature in the second round of the Open for the first time since 1992.

Triple rate hike: Shock as Aus big bank delivers blow ahead of RBA

Homebuyers or owners looking to lock in a fixed loan have been hit with a massive jump today.

One of Australia’s biggest banks has delivered a brutal blow to homebuyers with the equivalent of a triple rate hike, adding hundreds to the cost of a typical fixed mortgage repayment.

The Commonwealth Bank, Australia’s largest, jacked up its fixed rates by up to 0.70 percentage points – the same as if the Reserve Bank hiked three times in a row.

The bank’s savage repricing saw its three-year fixed rate rocket from 5.34 per cent to 6.04 per cent, leaving borrowers who locked in earlier dodging a financial bullet.

    Bank’s painful move for homeowners

Australia’s major home loan lenders are lifting their fixed rate offerings, in a grim sign for cash-strapped mortgage holders.

The Commonwealth Bank has lifted interest rates on its fixed home loans by up to 0.70 per cent, to make its lowest rate 5.79 per cent for two-years.

CBA is not alone in lifting interest rates with data from rate tracking site Canstar showing 34 lenders have hiked at least one fixed rate offering in the past month.

The lift in fixed interest rates come ahead of a forecast of interest rate hike in February.

The Reserve Bank of Australia next meets on February 2-3, with the CBA warning the official cash rate could rise from 3.60 per cent to 3.85 per cent.

The Aussie ingredient in the latest supercharged Ford Mustang V8 track special – but there's a cruel catch

An Australian ingredient has helped create Ford's latest high-performance, supercharged V8 Mustang – but, for now at least, Australians will be denied the chance to buy one.

Ford has called upon Australian engineering to create its newest supercharged V8-powered Ford Mustang track special, the Dark Horse SC, revealed in the US overnight.

Yet, like the Mustang GTD and Shelby GT500 before it, Australian customers are to be skipped – for now, at least – in the rollout of the latest hero Ford, as it is not expected to be produced in right-hand drive for local showrooms.

The Dark Horse SC is the 5.2-litre supercharged V8 successor to the Shelby GT500 in the previous-generation Mustang range, and draws on the Dark Horse name that debuted on a less potent track-ready variant based on the regular 5.0-litre GT.

Ford has announced its new Mustang Dark Horse SC sports car over in North America.

This Mustang will replace the Shelby GT500 variant — as the top-spec track-ready edition of the car.

Little is known about the technical details of the new muscle car, other than it will be powered by a supercharged 5.2-litre V8 petrol engine.

This same engine is fitted to the hardcore Mustang GTD, which makes 608kW, but expect the Dark Horse SC to produce less than that but still more than the Shelby GT500's 567kW.

Kyrgios begins his Brisbane International campaign against world number 60 Aleksandar Kovacevic as early as Sunday.

Nick Kyrgios says he would slog it out in Australian Open qualifying if that is the path offered to him, adamant he will not "butter it up" and take a main-draw wildcard this summer.
