New Australian Kasatkina can 'finally breathe'

Daria Kasatkina, the world number 48, reached the fourth round at the 2025 Australian Open

Russian-born Daria Kasatkina says she can "finally breathe" as she prepares for her first Australian Open as a home player.

Kasatkina has gained Australian citizenship in the build-up to the tournament, having played as a neutral athlete since Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The 28-year-old has not returned to Russia since coming out as gay in the same year, and has described the war in Ukraine as a "nightmare".

"Finally I can just breathe. I can live and just do my job and not be worried about the things which are not in my control," said the former world number eight.

Daria Kasatkina says she feels fully accepted as an Australian after receiving her citizenship, but on the flipside has contemplated turning off her social media channels in an attempt to protect herself from the abuse she continues to be subjected to.

The 28-year-old said she felt “so much love” as she revealed her citizenship for the first time, less than 12 months after switching allegiances from Russia, but expressed frustration about the “idiots in the world” who have her in their sights for not only being a professional tennis player, but one who came out as gay in 2022.

Reflective of Kalinskaya’s injury woes, Kartal was stronger in last year’s hard court season overall – but has had better Slam results on the clay and grass than on the Slam hard courts.

Kartal’s strength since her breakout year on the tour is that she is still a first-time opponent for many of the higher-ranked players. Her disruptive style of play has caused a handful for several players giving her some notable scalps.

A 19-year-old Canadian woman found dead on the beach on a popular tourist island off the Queensland coast on Monday morning was discovered surrounded by a pack of dingoes.

But despite confirming her body had been “touched and interfered with” by the wild canids on K’gari (formerly known as Fraser Island), police say they will await a postmortem before speculating as to the cause of her death.

Wide Bay Burnett District Patrol Insp Paul Algie told reporters Monday afternoon that the young woman had been working at a backpacker hostel on the eastern beaches.

Alcaraz chases history at Australian Open despite split while women’s draw is open

Sinner is the Spaniard’s clear rival but Swiatek, Rybakina, Bencic, Gauff and others are in Sabalenka’s way

Everyone wants to know exactly why Carlos Alcaraz split up with Juan Carlos Ferrero. It was, by some margin, one of the most surprising coaching separations in the history of tennis, a decision that came with no clear warning immediately after the greatest season of Alcaraz’s career. The discourse has since ranged from his alleged determination to reside exclusively at home in El Palmar, Murcia and train in his home academy, to potential discontent at Ferrero’s absences from numerous tournaments last year.

'A chapter of life' ends – Alcaraz on Ferrero split

Carlos Alcaraz won the French Open and US Open last year

Six-time major winner Carlos Alcaraz described his surprise split with long-time coach Juan Carlos Ferrero as a "chapter of life that has to end".

The world number one surprised tennis fans in December when he announced he had parted ways with Ferrero, who had coached him since he was 15 years old.

BBC Sport understands Ferrero did not want to leave his role, but Alcaraz said on Friday they "closed this chapter in mutual".

He explained: "We, as I said, both are still friends, good relationship. But we just decided like this.

Australian Open Men’s Day 1 Predictions Including Alexander Bublik vs Jenson Brooksby

With 16 matches on the slate, it promises to be an entertaining first day at Melbourne Park. As always, we here at LWOT will be offering our predictions for every match on the schedule, including Carlos Alcaraz vs Adam Walton, Alexander Zverev vs Gabriel Diallo, and Frances Tiafoe vs Jason Kubler. But who will reach the second round at the Australian Open?

Nurein: The Australian Open has been Alexander Bublik’s least favourite Grand Slam in terms of results. While the Kazakh is now entrenched in the world’s top 10, that doesn’t change the overriding factor about his unpredictability in any match. Jenson Brooksby is a counterpunching machine, but on the evidence of his performances in the opening week of the season, he is unlikely to hurt Bublik.

Australian Open R1 previews and predictions: Bublik vs. Brooksby, Zverev vs. Diallo

    The Australian Open gets underway on Sunday, when seeds Alexander Bublik and Alexander Zverev deal with tough first-round tests. They are going up against Jenson Brooksby and Gabriel Diallo, respectively.(10) Alexander Bublik vs. Jenson BrooksbyFor the third time in his career, Bublik is setting off at a Grand Slam as one of the outside title favorites behind Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner. His first such effort did not go well — a first-round loss at Wimbledon to Jaume Munar. The second one was far better, as Bublik beat Tommy Paul en route to the U.S. Open fourth round but got a bad draw and lost to Jannik Sinner. A banner 2025 campaign that featured four ATP titles allowed Bublik to be an alternate at the Nitto ATP Finals. Picking up right where he left off, the 28-year-old Kazakh kicked off this season with a title in Hong Kong.There are no more bad draws in the early stages of a slam for Bublik as the No. 10 player in the world, but a matchup with Brooksby on Sunday is not a friendly one by opening-round standards. Brooksby is back up to No. 48 in the world and he would probably be seeded at majors right now had it not been for a two-year suspension in 2023 and 2024. The 25-year-old American won his only previous meeting with Bublik 6-2, 6-3 at the 2022 Montreal Masters. Unfortunately for Brooksby, this is an entirely different Bublik that will be on the other side of the net. This would be tricky for the Bublik of old, but the 10th seed’s current style of bully ball should be enough to dispose of Brooksby’s junk-balling.Pick: Bublik in 3 #ays-poll-id-696c5b447df00.box-apm { width: 600px;
