The Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have declared a maritime blockade on Saudi Arabia, effective immediately, targeting ships carrying Saudi exports through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

The Houthis claim they are acting in response to Saudi Arabia's "oppressive siege" on Yemen over the past 12 years.

The move could put even greater pressure on international energy supplies.

US launches new strikes after Iran-backed Houthis declare blockade of another key oil route

Dubai/Riyadh: Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis said they would impose a naval blockade on Saudi Arabia, opening a potential new front against the US in its war with Iran and raising the threat to global energy supplies and trade beyond the Gulf.

The Houthis made their announcement despite signs that Tehran and Washington want to resume diplomacy to halt a worsening cycle of attacks that has all but wrecked a fragile interim agreement signed last month.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said mediators had presented “proposals” to Tehran, signalling that diplomatic contacts remain active, but gave no details.

Oil prices rose briefly after the Houthi statement, but later fell back as traders held out hope of a diplomatic breakthrough. The insurance cost of shipping goods through the Red Sea rose on the increased risks for merchant shipping.

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has backed two of his assistants as contenders for the vacant Carlton job while preparing for a clash with an unpredictable opponent.

For the second time in as many years, the Bulldogs will confront an opposition in their first game under a new caretaker coach, when Josh Fraser leads the Blues at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.

'He's ready': Coach backed to take over from Michael Voss as Carlton boss

Collingwood coach Craig McRae has offered a ringing endorsement for assistant Hayden Skipworth to take over as Carton boss. The Blues are on the hunt for a new coach after Michael Voss stood down this week after four years in charge.

Premiership-winning coaches Adam Simpson, John Longmire and Paul Roos have all had their names thrown in the ring, while experienced pair Ken Hinkley and Nathan Buckley could also come into consideration. Carlton CEO Graham Wright said he wants to go through a formal process to find the Blues' next coach, which potentially gives untried assistants an edge in the race.

"Capable and ready as anyone": Western Bulldogs coach endorses pair of assistants for Carlton top job

Western Bulldogs assistants Brendon Lade and Daniel Pratt are more than "capable" to take on the senior coaching gig at Carlton, according to Luke Beveridge.

The Blues are on the search for another top dog after Michael Voss handed in his resignation earlier this week, and pundits scramble for the best live option.

Lade and Pratt are well-credentialed in the AFL landscape, and are among the names deemed candidates for the vacant role.

"Over the journey we've had assistants come and go," Beveridge said.

"When you consider Brendon Lade is right up there with doing all the yards. He's a big friendly giant. He's as capable and ready as anyone. Pratty is in the boat as well.

Why the Bezos-backed Met Gala is so controversial | The Latest

It's the grandest and glitziest event in the fashion calendar, but this year’s Met Gala has sparked backlash thanks to its new honorary chairs, Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos. The billionaire Amazon founder’s involvement has led to boycotts and criticism of the event. Lucy Hough speaks to the Guardian’s fashion and lifestyle editor, Morwenna Ferrier

The Amazon takeover of the Met Gala signals an apocalypse for fashion

Last year Anna Wintour made us believe that she was handing the keys to the Vogue kingdom to journalist Chloe Malle when she stepped away from her role as editor of the magazine, but the real power play was just a click away.

When celebrities arrive for this year’s Met Gala, Vogue’s annual festival of fashion, their host won’t be Malle but honorary chairs, billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife Lauren Sanchez Bezos.

A look at the queues outside any luxury store, where the aesthetic is more Glassons than Gucci, shows that money can’t buy you taste. But for a reported $US10 million fee ($13.9 million) it has placed the Bezoses at the head table of an event once seen as the pinnacle of creative clothing expression.
