Temporary ban to protect Whyalla's 'significantly low' cuttlefish numbers

Boat tours and recreation water-based activities such as swimming and diving will be temporarily banned in the cuttlefish sanctuary zone off waters near Whyalla.

The South Australian government says the 90-day exclusion zone is needed to minimise the impact on cuttlefish, which have turned up in low numbers this year.

Impacted cuttlefish tour operators will be able to apply for financial assistance from the government.

A temporary ban on in-water recreational activities begins in South Australia's Upper Spencer Gulf tomorrow in a bid by the state government to protect the breeding site of giant Australian cuttlefish which have arrived in "significantly low" numbers this year.

Incredible discovery under glass-bottom boat sparks hope for Aussie attraction

There's hope across a South Australian coastal town after holidaymakers cancelled their trips when a natural annual event didn't occur as expected this winter.

Every June, between 75,000 and 150,000 brightly coloured giant cuttlefish assemble to mate in one place — the shallows of Whyalla, in South Australia's Spencer Gulf.

Their bright displays and huge numbers attract thousands of people, bringing in close to $10 million for the town's Cuttlefest festival alone.

But so far, only a few dozen have been documented, possibly due to the toxic algal bloom that has killed upwards of 90,000 marine creatures, from 390 species.

Over the weekend, local tour guide Steve Storic saw something through his boat's glass bottom that has left him "super excited".

Whyalla wipeout fears: cuttlefish usually gather in their thousands, but few have appeared since a massive algal bloom

Divers have observed just a ‘couple of dozen’ of the cephalopods along the heritage-listed Cuttlefish Coast in South Australia, causing locals and marine scientists to worry

Mid-June is usually the peak time for giant Australian cuttlefish to gather near Whyalla, in South Australia’s Spencer Gulf.

Nearly every year, they come in their thousands – and sometimes hundreds of thousands – to assemble in the shallows to breed. It’s a globally unique natural phenomenon, celebrated locally as “Cuttlefest”.

But so far this year, only a few dozen have turned up.

Vote to ban certain products at Brooklyn food co-op stirs up claims of antisemitism

PARK SLOPE, Brooklyn (WABC) — A vote at the Park Slope Food Coop on Tuesday night intensified an already heated debate among members over whether the grocery should boycott Israeli products amid the ongoing conflict involving Israel and Gaza.

Outside the member-owned cooperative, One member shouted, "our boycott tonight is consistent with our long history of boycotts!"

Supporters of the proposed boycott said their stance goes beyond food choices. "Many of us just don't shop here again because it's a grocery store. We shop here because it's consistent with our values," one member said.

Outside the co-op, dueling signs reflected the divide. Some members argued that boycotting fewer than a dozen Israeli-made items would send a message of economic and moral pressure.

Park Slope Food Co-op Votes to Boycott Israeli Products

In a three-hour meeting, members of the grocery cooperative voted by a margin of more than 2 to 1 in favor of a boycott.

The members of the Park Slope Food Co-op voted overwhelmingly on Tuesday to boycott Israeli products, approving a measure hailed by supporters as a moral stand in defense of Palestinian rights but castigated by opponents as an endorsement of an antisemitic movement to eliminate Israel.

The measure was approved by a wide margin of more than 2 to 1, reflecting the depth of dismay in one of New York’s most progressive and well-heeled neighborhoods at Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians. Sixty-seven percent of those who voted approved the boycott, and 31 percent opposed, while 2 percent abstained.

St Kilda has successfully had Lance Collard's ban for a homophobic slur reduced at the appeals board.

The appeals board deemed the AFL Tribunal's initial sanction of nine weeks, two suspended, was "crippling" for Collard's career.

St Kilda forward Lance Collard's ban for a homophobic slur has been reduced from nine weeks to four after an appeal hearing determined the original sanction was "crippling".

In a hearing which lasted two hours, Collard's defence was able to successfully argue that the AFL's original sanction over an incident in the VFL on March 27 was manifestly excessive.

When is Lance Collard's appeal? St Kilda talent to contest guilty homophobic slur verdict from AFL Tribunal

After Zac Butters' umpire vilification case was overturned, the AFL faces a second appeals this week – this time involving St Kilda's Lance Collard.

Collard was given a nine-week ban after being found guilty by the AFL Tribunal of using a homophobic slur against Frankston's Darby Hipwell in the VFL.

However, the Saints have decided to appeal the verdict and will contest the case this week.

The Sporting News has all the details on when the appeal will be heard.

St Kilda’s Lance Collard has had his penalty for using a homophobic slur in a VFL game reduced to four weeks (with two weeks suspended until the end of 2027) by the AFL Appeals Board, which described the original penalty as “crippling” for the player.

The appeals board, led by Will Houghton KC, backed the AFL Disciplinary Tribunal’s decision to find Collard guilty but said their decision to ban him for seven weeks (and two suspended) was “manifestly excessive”.

It is the second time in two years Collard has been found to have used homophobic language in a match, however he denied using the phrase “f—ing f—-t” in this match against Frankston.

Australia’s vulnerability to liquid fuel shortages and price hikes has intensified amid reports China has told oil refiners to halt all fuel exports. This adds to continued global uncertainty about the duration of the Iran conflict and its impact upon oil supplies.

On Friday, the Australian Financial Review reported China had notified oil refiners to halt all exports, casting doubt over at least two cargoes due to be shipped to Australia.

Australia exposed in global scramble for fuel

China’s decision to cancel contracts to ship fuels to foreign buyers risks leaving an underprepared Australia badly exposed, as Energy Minister Chris Bowen conceded for the first time that war in the Middle East and the resulting global scramble for energy could lead to shortages within a month.

As the price of oil again climbed above $US100 a barrel, China told oil refiners to halt all fuel exports, casting doubt over at least two cargoes due to be shipped to Australia.

Australia social media ban: Teens share their views one month on

One month since Australia's teen social media ban kicked in, she says she is "disconnected from my phone" and her daily routine has changed.

The 14-year-old first felt the pangs of online addiction in the days after the ban started.

"I knew that I was still unable to access Snapchat – however, from instinct, I still reached to open the app in the morning," she wrote on day two of the ban in a diary she kept for the first week afterwards.

By day four of the ban – when ten platforms including Facebook, Instagram and TikTok went dark for thousands of Australian children aged 16 and under – she had started to question the magnetic pull of Snapchat.
