Live: Commonwealth Bank reports $10.9b annual profit, ASX to slip as US-Iran optimism fades

The nation's second-largest company Commonwealth Bank has reported its annual net profit rose to $10.9 billion.

The Australian share market is expected to start its day lower on fading optimism about a US-Iran peace deal happening any time soon.

Private health insurers are potentially seeking too much access to patients' confidential medical information, through what has been described by the Australian Private Hospitals Association as "aggressive" audit practices.

Under agreements with patients and hospitals, insurers are entitled to ask a medical practitioner for a patient's notes relating to an episode of treatment, to ensure the correct procedure item numbers were billed.

CBA profits hit $11 billion, dividend raised

Commonwealth Bank has notched up $11 billion in cash profit fuelled by growth across its vast loan and deposit portfolios, but it also warned economic growth was slowing amid higher interest rates and inflation.

CBA on Wednesday said cash net profit after tax rose 7 per cent in the year to June, as its operating income grew by 6 per cent, helped by growth in CBA’s key markets of home loans, business loans, consumer lending and household and business deposits.

Despite strong growth in the year to June, however, CBA also said new applications for mortgages had fallen 15 per cent since the May budget, as the housing market slows due to higher interest rates and a tightening in tax concessions for property investors. The bank also said costs from soured loans had increased due to cost of living pressures and increased economic uncertainty.

CBA reports $10.9b profit but warns economic growth is slowing

Commonwealth Bank has reported a 7 per cent increase in profit to $10.98 billion driven by loan and deposit growth, but says mortgage applications are down 15 per cent since the federal budget while growth is slowing as higher interest rates and costs put pressure on family budgets.

Revolut starts a new bank in Australia after winning APRA licence

Revolut has been granted an Australian banking licence in a coup for the fast-growing, London-headquartered payments business as it lures customers from major banks after creating a financial services super app.

The company opened Revolut Bank Australia after securing an unrestricted licence from the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority five years after applying. It was awarded a similar licence in the United Kingdom in March.

New bank launches in Australia to take on Big Four as popular app gets 'defining moment'

Australian regulators have granted a banking licence to a global fintech giant paving the way for a new entrant in the local banking scene. It's already got plenty of users, but Revolut can now take deposits from Aussie customers and will begin offering accounts with savings interest above 5 per cent, calculated and paid daily.

The popular UK-based budgeting and personal finance app officially launched in Australia nearly six years ago. Founded in 2015, the company touts itself as a "financial superapp" and "one app for all things money", and offers highly competitive money transfer and currency exchange services, as well as budgeting services.

Brazilian Real: LatAm policy paths and FX levels – Societe Generale

Societe Generale’s Emerging Markets (EM) strategists say the Brazilian central bank, Banco Central do Brasil (BCB) minutes support an easing cycle with pauses to guide inflation back to 3% by 1Q28, leaving USD/BRL approaching its 200‑day moving average at 5.25.

"In LatAm, minutes from the BCB meeting support our house view that the easing cycle will be interspersed with pauses to guide inflation back to the 3% target by 1Q28. "

"Policymakers signal a preference to track a path closer to market and analyst expectations to limit financial and macro volatility."

"That said, the minutes do not fully explain the decision to drop rates by 25bp last week despite signalling upside inflation risks. "

Brazil 10-Year Yield Eases After Copom Minutes

Brazil’s 10-year government bond yield edged down to 14.4% in late June after the release of the minutes from the latest Copom meeting, in which the benchmark Selic rate was cut by 25 basis points to 14.25% per year.

The view that Copom left the door open for further Selic cuts helped ease the Brazilian yield curve.

Still, the minutes struck a slightly more hawkish tone than the initial statement, explicitly describing the inflation risk balance as asymmetric and tilted to the upside.

Meanwhile, the US Federal Reserve adopted a more hawkish stance at its latest meeting, with policymakers signaling additional rate hikes by December.

Judo Bank tanks as loan losses reveal economy’s rapid decline

Once investors get past a 45 per cent share price drop, they’ll worry about how three loans in entirely different sectors and states could go bad all at once.

Slowing household credit growth is the biggest story in Australian banking.

The federal budget has hit investor loans, house prices are no longer soaring, auction clearance rates are soft, and competition among the banks for new loans and refinancing is reasonably strong. These factors could result in household credit growth halving, underpinning the $11 billion short-the-banks thesis.

Aussie bank plunges in value as loans suddenly go bad: 'Very rapidly'

An Aussie bank has seen the valuation of its business on the Australian stock exchange nearly halve in a single trading day. Judo Bank's share price plunged on Thursday after revealing bad debts to the market.

The bank, which lends to small and medium businesses, said three loans had gone bad in recent weeks, stoking concerns about the state of the economy and sending jitters through investors. One of the loans was to a business that had suddenly entered voluntary administration which caught the bank off guard as the business "deteriorated very rapidly".

"Judo's cost of risk has been impacted primarily by specific provision increases for three exposures across different sectors that have recently emerged," the bank said in an update to the ASX.

Commonwealth Bank shares slump 10.4pc in biggest one-day fall on record

CBA shares plunged 10 per cent on Wednesday, while other bank stocks also closed in the red. (ABC News: Margaret Burin)

Commonwealth Bank shares have suffered their largest one-day fall on record, closing 10.4 per cent lower today.

The previous worst day for Australia's biggest bank was in March 2020, when the stock dropped 10 per cent in the early days of the pandemic.

CBA's major peers also came under pressure on the ASX, with Westpac (-2.8pc), ANZ (-1.6pc) and NAB (-1.5pc) shares all dropping.

Despite the heavyweight financial sector posting losses, the ASX 200 only ended the session half a per cent lower, as other sectors rose. 108 of the top 200 stocks made gains.

    Major bank hikes mortgage rates

The bank was lifting all rates from one-year to five years by from six to 20 basis points. (Source: istock.com)

ASB is the latest bank to raise mortgage rates, citing uncertain global financial markets and increased wholesale rates.

The bank would lift all rates from one year to five years by six to 20 basis points.

"Global financial markets have been volatile, and ongoing geopolitical tensions have driven sustained increases in wholesale interest rates," the bank's executive general manager for personal banking Adam Boyd said.

"These rates underpin lending and deposit pricing in New Zealand and reflect broader trends across international markets as economies navigate the current outlook."

    Rate hike pressure builds

The rise and rise of wholesale money costs has brought another major bank home loan rate rise. This time it is ASB.

Its new rate card has been set near or at the upper end of the rates from the banks with the highest rates. (See the chart below).

Only ASB's fixed six month rate remains unchanged and matching most of their main rivals.

But all other, longer fixed rates put them 10 basis points (bps) to 40 bps higher than the lowest other main banks, which presently are BNZ and Westpac.

At the same time, ASB has raised its term deposit rates. But like other banks before them, not for any terms that savers prefer. Their one year term deposit (TD) rate is now up to 3.75% (+5 bps). ASB is the one main bank with a 5% TD rate offer – for a five year term.

Australian shares edge lower as miners retreat, markets await Middle East talks

Why economists are saying the RBA won’t hike rates again

The market is underestimating a brewing economic downturn, the investment bank has warned.

The wrecking ball impact on the Australian economy from the Middle East conflict means the Reserve Bank will decline to lift rates again in 2026 before moving to an easing cycle next year, according to economists at Morgan Stanley.

On Tuesday the investment bank warned the market is underestimating a brewing economic downturn in Australia as house and equity prices fall.

While consumer confidence plunged to a 53-year low in March as evidence mounts that households are being swamped by higher interest rates and petrol prices.
