Australia’s big banks hike fees, slash rewards as card surcharge ban looms

Australia’s biggest banks are rolling out fee hikes and slashing points programs to limit the sting from the Reserve Bank’s impending card surcharge ban.

Surcharges on debit and credit payments will be scrapped on October 1 following a decision by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA), billed as a way to save Australians money on every transaction.

The impending ban is expected to cost banks about $600 million per year.

This will include a reduction in interchange fees, which are paid by businesses to banks.

But financial institutions are finding ways to claw the money back through increasing card fees, raising interest rates and slashing customer loyalty programs.

CBA throws down the gauntlet in challenge for loyalty dominance

A simple question during a parliamentary hearing two years ago has triggered the biggest overhaul of a bank rewards scheme, and there’s a lot at stake.

Commonwealth Bank has chosen Virgin’s Velocity over Qantas’ Frequent Flyer loyalty program as the main partner for its own scheme. Bethany Rae

When Labor MP Jerome Laxale asked bank executives appearing before a parliamentary inquiry two years ago why his $5 cup of coffee cost $5.08 if he paid with a card, he could hardly have envisaged the monumental shake-up of the loyalty points market that was to come.

This week, Commonwealth Bank overhauled its loyalty scheme, signalling it would compete more aggressively with its Yello program against Qantas Frequent Flyer in an about-face that showed the reward-points market is shifting, and quickly. Arguably, it is possible to draw a line between that moment and the seemingly innocuous question two years earlier.

Markets today: Banks weigh down ASX, Sunrise Energy jumps after Pentagon deal

Australia’s sharemarket has started the week on the back foot after a dip in mortgage applications raised questions about coming bank earnings.

The S&P/ASX200 fell 31 points on Monday, down 0.3 per cent to 9232.6, as the broader All Ordinaries lost 21.1 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 9424.

Westpac tumbled more than 5 per cent after its third-quarter mortgage applications slumped by a fifth following May’s federal budget announcement, raising concerns about how banks would fare this earnings season.

Traders had been bracing for budget-related volatility to hit the market, likely starting with the banks, IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said.

“Impacts on property prices, credit growth and removing investors from the market, that’s going to flow through to the banks,” Sycamore said.

Westpac is forecasting a sharp slowdown in demand from property investors, telling shareholders that total mortgage applications had slumped by a fifth since Labor made sweeping changes to tax concessions in May.

ASIC found Australian banks paid more than $55 million in compensation to customers in just two years, for failures with mortgage offset accounts.

The regulator said several banks had begun remediation and it would monitor their fixes, provide individual feedback and consider further regulatory action.

Check your offset account: Are the banks returning to bastardry?

It was eight years ago, during a bruising royal commission, that Australia’s banking industry sustained injury to its image so damaging that it lost the community’s trust.

Now, after several years of rehabilitation efforts by the banks, behavioural creep is emerging again. The latest example is the shortchanging of hundreds of thousands of customers with mortgage offset accounts. The systemic nature of this issue was uncovered by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission.

The backlash from the royal commission’s revelations of banks’ bad behaviour wiped out a legion of the industry’s board directors and executives on the back of a community shaming exercise.

'Outer Banks' Gets Season 5 Release Date, Storyline & First Trailer

Oh no, not The Twinkie! The first official trailer for the upcoming fifth and final season of Netflix‘s hit action adventure series Outer Banks shows John B. (Chase Stokes) watching in horror as Cleo (Carlacia Grant) blows up his beloved van. The teaser also reveals that the new season will debut August 20, almost two years after the October 2024 premiere of Season 4.

It will not be a prolonged goodbye as the entire 10-episode Season 5 will be released as a binge drop after the series’ fourth installment was split into two batches that premiered four weeks apart. Netflix has been pulling away from the split-season model, with Bridgerton as the only current scripted series that still employs it.

Tyra Banks sues Netflix over ‘America’s Next Top Model’ doc

Tyra Banks filed a defamation lawsuit against Netflix on Saturday, accusing the streaming giant of manipulating her into participating in a bombshell documentary about her former reality show “America’s Next Top Model.”

Netflix’s “Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model” chronicles both the show’s historic successes and its controversies, including an early contestant claiming she was sexually assaulted on camera, another undergoing cosmetic surgery to remain in the competition, and a challenge that required contestants to wear blackface.

Banks participated in the three-part documentary, which drew significant attention for examining the exploitative nature of early reality television. She now alleges that her confessionals were “stripped of context and reassembled to support a false and defamatory narrative unrelated to what she actually expressed.”

Tyra Banks sues Netflix over portrayal in 'America's Next Top Model' docuseries

Banks alleges the docuseries gives her a "false" and "defamatory" portrayal.

Tyra Banks is taking legal action against Netflix, alleging that the streaming giant misrepresented her in its recent docuseries examining the legacy of "America’s Next Top Model."

According to a federal lawsuit filed Saturday in California, Banks claimed her appearance in "Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model" was edited in a way that created a false and defamatory portrayal of her role on the long-running reality competition series. She is seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages, according to the complaint obtained by ABC News.

In the filing, Banks says she agreed to participate in the project because she believed it would offer viewers an honest discussion about both the successes and criticisms of "America’s Next Top Model."

ANZ chief urges banks to return to wealth, insurance

Australian banks should re-enter wealth management and insurance to improve their profitability, says ANZ chief executive Nuno Matos, areas they abandoned in the aftermath of the damaging banking royal commission.

Speaking at investment bank Morgan Stanley’s annual conference, Matos highlighted a steep decline in the big four’s return on capital over the past decade, which he linked to the narrower suite of services they now offer.

At its meeting today, the Board decided to increase the cash rate target by 25 basis points to
    4.35 per cent.

Inflation picked up materially in the second half of 2025, and information since the beginning of
this year confirms that some of this increase reflected greater capacity pressures. In addition, the
conflict in the Middle East has resulted in sharply higher fuel and related commodity prices, which
are already adding to inflation. There are early signs that many firms experiencing cost pressures
are looking to increase prices of their goods and services. Short-term measures of inflation
    expectations have also risen.

Inflation to hit 5 per cent as oil price bites – and it could get even worse

Inflation is likely to hit 5 per cent by the middle of the year and could soar to 7 per cent by Christmas if the war against Iran pushes oil to $US200 a barrel, with Jim Chalmers’ fifth budget to confirm Australians will face ongoing price pressures.

This masthead can reveal Treasury believes inflation will peak higher than the Reserve Bank estimates, contributing to a slowdown in the economy that will also feed into a softer jobs market.

The government is waiting until the latest possible time to finalise its most important economic forecasts given the turmoil in global oil markets created by the war against Iran. Brent crude has moved between $US98 and $US115 a barrel in the past five days, meaning $200 is an extreme scenario.
