The club has experienced mostly highs in the past few months thanks to their fairy-tale run to the Grand Final, but it copped a blow this week when the Broncos officially announced they poached Knights head of recruitment Peter O’Sullivan.

And now the Perth Bears are in the frame to make a play for Newcastle chief executive Peter Parr following the resignation of Anthony De Ceglie last week.

Fresh off the Brisbane Broncos poaching Newcastle's recruitment manager O'Sullivan, it appears the Perth Bears might now be interested in chief executive officer Parr.

Reports have emerged suggesting Parr could be a contender for the incoming NRL side's vacant CEO position.

The experienced administrator has history with Perth. He worked for the city's former rugby league side, the Western Reds, in the 1990s.

After Anthony De Ceglie stepped down as Perth CEO last week, the Bears could certainly do with Parr's football nous.

‘Brutal’ injury rocks contender; NFL team’s telling act after savage hit on great – Wrap

It was a bad day to be a quarterback in the NFL, with a pair of stars suffering ugly injuries to leave their teams facing an uphill battle.

Veteran Aaron Rodgers also had a rough time of it after being brutally blindsided, then pulled late, on a dark afternoon for the Pittsburgh Steelers against the New England Patriots.

Meanwhile, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ clash with the Cleveland Browns was suspended at a crucial moment; while the Green Bay Packers overcame a 10-point deficit for a thrilling OT win.

Read on for all the latest NFL news in our Week 2 wrap!

NFL roundup: Bears QB Caleb Williams carted off in loss to Vikings; Saints stun Ravens

Carson Wentz passed for 143 yards, Aaron Jones Sr. rushed for 105 yards, and the visiting Minnesota Vikings (2-0) escaped with a 9-3 win over the Chicago Bears, who lost their quarterback to a hamstring injury.

In the fourth quarter, Williams’s injury cast a pall over the Soldier Field crowd on a gloomy, wet day along the lakefront. The Bears (1-1) trailed by three points but had first-and-goal from the Vikings’ six-yard line with less than eight minutes to go. Williams kept the ball ‌and sprinted to his left with ample green space in front of him.

Suddenly, Williams stumbled and fell to his knees on a non-contact play. He rolled over a few times in pain until the Bears’ medical staff attended to him. He appeared to fight emotions as he was carted from the sideline to the locker room. The Bears said Williams suffered a hamstring injury.

England International And Raiders Star Morgan Smithies Commits To Perth Bears

The Perth Bears’ “Blitz of Britain” has continued with Test forward Morgan Smithies becoming the fourth English star to join the club for their historic debut season in 2027.

The 25-year-old, who currently plays for the Canberra Raiders, has signed a three-year deal with an option for an extra two seasons.

He will join Harry Newman, James McDonnell and Mikolaj Oledzki as England Test players who have committed to the Bears.

Smithies played 105 Super League games for Wigan before joining the Canberra Raiders in 2024.

The barnstorming forward has been a mainstay for the Raiders in recent years amassing 67 First Grade games.

Bears' English raid continues, sign Canberra forward

Perth have signed Canberra toiler Morgan Smithies, but a marquee foundation player continues to prove elusive for the NRL's 18th team.

Smithies has inked a three-year deal and becomes the fourth Englishman to join the Bears for their return to the competition in Western Australia next year.

The 25-year-old's deal contains an option for two further seasons beyond that.

Smithies joined Canberra in 2024 and has become a mainstay of Ricky Stuart's forward pack, piecing together a strong 2025 campaign as the Raiders clinched the minor premiership.

Morgan Smithies has averaged 7.2 hit-ups per game in a frustrating season for the Raiders. (Brett Phibbs/AAP PHOTOS)

NRL: Bears lure Wallabies legend in key code-switch signing

The Perth Bears have signed Wallabies legend David Campese as their recruitment guru as they try to tap into the best rugby talent in South Africa.

The code switch of one of Australian rugby’s biggest names is a bold move and has the potential to be the marquee signing the Bears have been craving.

The plan is to establish a rugby league academy in South Africa and capitalise on the vast amount of talent in the rugby ranks. Perth doesn’t have a natural junior base, but if the Bears can establish a production line of players coming out of the Rainbow Nation, it will be a masterstroke.

Wallabies star to headline Perth Bears recruitment

Former Wallabies great David Campese has joined the Perth Bears' recruitment team as the NRL's newest franchise ramps up plans to tap into South Africa's rich rugby talent pool.

The Australian rugby union legend has been enlisted as part of a long-term strategy to establish a pathway between South Africa and Perth, with the Bears identifying the rugby powerhouse as a potential source of future NRL players.

The move is understood to form part of a five-year project inspired by New Zealand's shifting sporting landscape, where rugby league has grown in popularity while rugby union has faced declining participation. The Bears hope to identify athletes capable of making a successful switch between codes and eventually developing into NRL talent.

Bears poach rising Rabbitohs gun in big coup, halves twist; Panthers block stars’ free agency bid

The Perth Bearshave reportedly signed South Sydney halfback Jamie Humphreys in a massive coup that completes a starting 19 for the club in 2027.

The Daily Telegraph reported the incoming NRL franchised has poached the 24-year-old after he failed to reach an agreement on an extension with the Rabbitohs.

Humphreys could form a halves partnership at the Bears with Toby Sexton, with fellow recruit Tyran Wishart tipped to play hooker.

Perth Bears lock in star player

The Perth Bears have continued to build their inaugural roster, securing playmaker Jamie Humphreys on a deal from 2027 in what shapes as another significant signing for the NRL's newest franchise.

Still just 24 years old, Humphreys has emerged as one of the more promising playmakers in the competition after making his NRL debut with the Manly Warringah Sea Eagles in 2024 before joining the South Sydney Rabbitohs the following season.

The Daily Telegraph revealed the move on Friday morning, although the length and value of Humphreys' contract remain unclear.

While Humphreys is predominantly in the halves, his ability to comfortably slot into hooker gives Bears coach Mal Meninga valuable flexibility alongside fellow utility playmaker Tyran Wishart.

NRL fans divided as South Sydney star on cusp of signing three-year deal with rival club

Rabbitohs fans are heavily divided amid news that halfback Jamie Humphreys is “very, very close” to signing with the Perth Bears for 2027. The 24-year-old has played 24 games for Souths since arriving at the club from Manly in 2025.

He was one of the Rabbitohs’ best last year in a season that was wrecked by injuries, although he too spent a significant time on the sidelines. Rabbitohs fans thought they’d found their long-term halfback, however his future at the club has been thrown into doubt in recent months.

The big-money signing of Payne Haas from the Broncos has created a salary cap squeeze at Souths, who haven’t been able to offer Humphreys as much money as he’d like. He’s also seemingly been leap-frogged by young gun Ashton Ward in the race to wear the No.7 jersey long term.

Incoming NRL side Perth Bears have reportedly turned their target towards Super League again for another new signing – with another of Catalans Dragons’ standouts in 2026 on their hit-list.

The Bears have already raided top-flight clubs in the United Kingdom, with three Leeds Rhinos stars already agreeing to sign for Mal Meninga’s side in 2027.

That’s according to The Mole at the Wide World of Sports, who has claimed that Staines has a get-out clause to return to the NRL if an opportunity comes along.

Staines, who left the Wests Tigers at the end of the 2025 NRL campaign, has lit up the south of France with the Dragons, registering six tries in eight games.

The 26-year-old signed a three-year deal with Catalans, but the Bears are circling after already luring the likes of Leeds Rhinos trio Harry Newman, James McDonnell and Mikolaj Oledzki.
