The two-time UFC featherweight champion is still doing his thing and is just days away from a showdown in Sydney against Diego Lopes.

But aged 37, the Wollongong fighter is entering the twilight of his sporting career, even though Volkanovski shot down retirement talk, stating he had every intention to fight again after the much-anticipated fight with Lopes this weekend.

Robert Whittaker argues Ilia Topuria is No. 2 greatest featherweight

Although Ilia Topuria's featherweight title reign was short, Robert Whittaker says you can't deny the results.

With featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski (27-4 MMA, 14-3 UFC) making his first title defense in a rematch against Diego Lopes in Saturday's UFC 325 headliner in Sydney, the featherweight GOAT debate has restarted. Volkanovski defended his belt five times in his first reign, before regaining his title with a win over Lopes at UFC 314.

Jose Aldo (32-10 MMA, 14-9 UFC) holds the record for most consecutive title defenses in UFC featherweight history at seven, with Volkanovski at five, and Max Holloway (27-8 MMA, 23- 8 UFC) at three. However, for Whittaker, Topuria's (17-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) one title defense over Holloway places him above everyone but Volkanovski.

Nick Kyrgios beaten in straight sets in just 65 minutes at Brisbane International as Cameron Norrie wins

Cameron Norrie (left) reached a career-high singles ranking of eighth in 2022, while Nick Kyrgios' highest is 13th in 2016

Nick Kyrgios' first ATP Tour match since March ended in a first-round defeat at the Brisbane International, while Britain's Cameron Norrie fought off three match points as he booked his place in the second round.

Australian Kyrgios, 30, who had played only six ATP singles matches in the past three seasons and was given a wildcard for the event, was beaten 6-3 6-4 in just 65 minutes by Aleksandar Kovacevic.

The defeat follows Kyrgios' victory in the 'Battle of the Sexes' exhibition match against women's world number one Aryna Sabalenka last month.

Nick Kyrgios may be resigned to tennis fringes as singles career fizzles out

Australian’s disappointing performance in Brisbane could vindicate officials’ reluctance to hand him a Melbourne Park wildcard

Nick Kyrgios appears set for little more than a peripheral role during Australia’s summer of tennis after a brisk, anticlimactic and – for fans of the 30-year-old – worrying defeat at the Brisbane International in his first competitive singles outing in almost 10 months.

The Canberran, who is recovering from knee and wrist surgeries and played only five times on the ATP Tour in 2025, offered little resistance against American Aleksandar Kovacevic in the first round at the Pat Rafter Arena on Tuesday. The 27-year-old American, ranked 58 in the world, breezed past the Australian 6-3 6-4 in just 66 minutes, without giving up a break point opportunity.

Brisbane: Nick Kyrgios has revealed after exiting the Brisbane International that the knee and wrist surgeries which derailed his career also robbed him of the invincibility he felt during his career-best 2022 season.

Kyrgios’ Australian Open wildcard audition will continue via doubles only after his first singles match in 10 months ended in a 6-3, 6-4 defeat in barely an hour to emerging American Aleksandar Kovacevic on Tuesday.

The contest, in front of a crowd cheering his every move, was a reminder that Kyrgios is understandably a shadow of the player who stormed into the Wimbledon final against tennis legend Novak Djokovic four years ago.
