Long Before Batman, Christian Bale Played His First Movie Superhero in a 24-Year-Old Cult Sci-fi Movie

For many fans, Christian Bale is the definitive Batman. His performance in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy and especially The Dark Knight is nothing short of iconic and helped make the actor, who was already critically acclaimed and by no means an unknown, very much a mainstream household name. And his turn as Batman wasn’t his last foray into the superhero space, either. He made his way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this time as villain, when he played Gorr the God Butcher in Thor: Love and Thunder in 2022. But while both of his comic book turns are notable, Batman in particular isn’t the first time the actor has portrayed a superhero. That role came long before he put on the cape and cowl.

Christian Bale Responds to the Upcoming American Psycho Adaptation: “Bold Choice of Anyone to Try”

Christian Bale was asked who should play Patrick Bateman in a new American Psycho adaptation at the March 3 premiere of The Bride! in New York. His answer to The Hollywood Reporter was generous, with a warning tucked in: “Whoever wants to give it a shot, give it a pop.” He wished the next actor well, called taking on the role a “bold choice” and added, “I like brave people.”

Bale played Bateman in Mary Harron’s 2000 film, and he told THR he had “fantastic memories of it all.” He also said he knew little about the new project, including whether it was a remake. Lionsgate sources told Deadline that Luca Guadagnino’s planned film is a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis’s novel rather than a remake of Harron’s movie.

Actors Have Passed on Patrick Bateman. Bret Easton Ellis Says, “I Think Maybe Because They Don’t Want to Be in the Shoes of Christian Bale”

Bret Easton Ellis says a couple of high-profile actors have already turned down the chance to play Patrick Bateman in Luca Guadagnino’s new “American Psycho.” He broke it down on his podcast while updating the casting for the Lionsgate adaptation of his 1991 novel.

“A couple of high-profile actors, whom I can’t name, have turned it down,” Ellis said. His read on why: “I think maybe because they don’t want to be in the shoes of Christian Bale.”

Bale played Bateman, a homicidal banker, in Mary Harron’s 2000 film. More than 25 years later, his performance still turns up in memes, Halloween costumes and commentary. Ellis offered a possible reason for the refusals, but he didn’t identify the actors or establish why they passed.
