'The Pitt' Season 2 Review: A Triumphant Return

When “The Pitt” premiered on HBO Max almost exactly a year ago, it was an unflashy medical drama without the boost of preexisting IP (though the Michael Crichton estate, which claims the project is an unauthorized reboot of “ER,” would disagree) or major stars. The show returns for Season 2 a conquering hero, the incumbent winner of the Emmy for outstanding drama series along with a quartet of additional trophies. The awards only cemented a rapturous celebration of “The Pitt” as a return to TV classicism amid the streaming revolution’s upheavals: a 15-episode season, a weekly release and a cast of largely unknowns catapulted to fame by sheer collective chemistry. Katherine LaNasa, Shawn Hatosy and Isa Briones — to name just three standouts from a massive and uniformly excellent cast, with LaNasa and Hatosy Emmy winners alongside star and executive producer Noah Wyle — may not be household names, but they’re now beloved by millions for bringing their characters to beleaguered, adrenalized life over a single shift in a fictionalized emergency room.

'The Pitt’ Season 2 Review: The Best Medical Show on TV Finally Lets Viewers Breathe

Everyone’s favorite ER superstar, Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch (Noah Wyle), continues to balance patient, staff, and personal crises in the second season of The Pitt, HBO Max’s Emmy-winning smash hit about the men and women manning the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center.

Once again taking place over the course of a single fifteen-hour shift on an insanely busy and stressful July 4, R. Scott Gemmill’s series (January 8) doesn’t try to one-up its bracing debut, slowly easing its way back into the brand of overwhelming health-care mayhem that made it last year’s breakout small-screen drama. Nonetheless, by its midway point, it hits a comfortably uncomfortable groove, all while further developing a terrific cast of characters whose heroism is as understated as it is inspiring. Avoiding the sophomore slump, it’s the most harrowingly realistic medical show on TV—and, also, the most empathetic.

Key numbers behind Indiana-Alabama — one of the unlikeliest Rose Bowls

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Indiana coach Curt Cignetti talks about how he has motivated his team to fight hard in close games. (1:23)

Thursday's Rose Bowl Game Presented by Prudential will see No. 1-ranked Indiana face No. 9 Alabama in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, a matchup that would have been nearly impossible to predict a decade ago.

Indiana enters the game with a 13-0 record, while Alabama is 11-3 after defeating No. 8-seeded Oklahoma on the road in the first round.

The Hoosiers haven't played since Dec. 6 — a 13-10 Big Ten Championship victory over then-No. 1-ranked Ohio State. It marked the program's first victory over an AP No. 1 team and outright conference championship since 1945. A week later, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the first Hoosier to win the award, which was created in 1935.

Indiana vs. Alabama live updates, score: Follow College Football Playoff action

Welcome to college football in 2025. Indiana is the No. 1 team in the country and favored by a touchdown over No. 9 Alabama in the Rose Bowl, which serves as a College Football Playoff quarterfinal.

And in a game that features the Heisman winner, not one person is surprised that player, QB Fernando Mendoza, plays for the Hoosiers and not the Crimson Tide.

Here’s how to watch all the College Football Playoff games (scroll for live updates).

It can’t be said often enough how Indiana made such a leap in Curt Cignetti’s first year and then got even better in his second year at the school. After a playoff appearance in 2024, Indiana simply beat everyone on its schedule in 2025.

Alabama vs. Indiana weather forecast: Rain expected for Rose Bowl

The Rose Bowl Game is one of the most iconic settings in sports, as the Southern California sunset hits the San Gabriel Mountains to create a beautiful New Year's Day visual as the game reaches its end.

However, it's not looking like that scenic moment will happen on Jan. 1, 2026.

The 2026 Rose Bowl features No. 1 Indiana taking on No. 9 Alabama in a College Football Playoff quarterfinal matchup, and it will be a game unlike most with a storm coming as the new year begins. As a result, heavy rain is expected in Pasadena, California, which could not only ruin the views, but have a major impact on the game itself.

Netflix’s Biggest Action Franchise Gets Major Spinoff Update With Title & First Look Image

Netflix has released several major action movies in recent years, often with big budgets and bigger stars. These range from The Gray Man with Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling, to Red Notice with Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds. While both pulled in well over 100 million views (and over 200m in the case of the latter), neither has received a sequel. Instead, the streamer’s biggest, bona fide action franchise is Chris Hemsworth’s Extraction, which has two movies with well over 200m views combined, and more on the way. The Thor actor stars as Tyler Rake, a mercenary who, as the title suggests, performs high-risk extraction or rescue missions.

Netflix's 'life-or-death' new thriller featuring Downton Abbey star gets first look

Netflix has released a first look at its upcoming thriller, Mercenary: An Extraction Series, and it is already shaping up to be a must-watch. Expanding the Extraction universe, which is based on the graphic novel Ciudad by Ande Parks, Joe Russo and Anthony Russo, the eight-part series follows a mercenary played by Omar Sy (Lupin) as he embarks on a dangerous rescue mission in Libya.

The series also stars Ed Speleers, who played Jimmy Kent in Downton Abbey, and Natalie Dormer, who has appeared in The Hunger Games and Game Of Thrones.

Filming took place across Ireland and Morocco, with Louise Hooper (The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, The Sandman) and Tim Southam (Foundation, One Piece) each directing four episodes. Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead, The Shield) serves as showrunner, while the series is executive produced by AGBO.

The story behind Australia's incredible democratic system

Behind the quirks of Australia's incredible democratic system are a series of complex human backstories. (ABC News)

As a nation, we sort of vaguely understand this, and take a generalised pride in the triennial democracy sausage, and the beige, competent omnipresence of the Australian Electoral Commission.

Annabel Crabb unearths the individuals and stories behind the features that combine to make Australian democracy globally unique.

But the itemised list of our peculiarities, and the tales that twine around the getting of them at various points along the life-span of our young Federation — just 125 years old next year! — is worth reviewing, if you have a moment.

Civic Duty: Annabel Crabb is on a one-woman mission to make Australian politics interesting

Australian politics: it’s enough to make your eyes glaze over — especially if you’re a 10-year-old kid being forced to sit through a HASS lesson on how our unique parliamentary system works.

But what if it didn’t have to be that way? What if there was a way to make people “marvel at the miracle that is the Australian electoral process” instead of rolling their eyes and running for the nearest exit?

Annabel Crabb is on a mission to prove that there is — she’s taking Aussie audiences along for the ride via her new series Civic Duty for ABC, and engaging the younger generation through her recently-released children’s book, There’s A Prawn In Parliament House: The Kids’ Guide To Australia’s Amazing Democracy.

Ever since she started knocking on politicians’ doors in 2012 for Kitchen Cabinet, Annabel Crabb has been determined to put a human face on our elected representatives. She has always made them reveal more than what they could, or could not, cook: Christopher Pyne was funny, former treasurer Joe Hockey lived like a sharehouse student, while former Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce blithely served up beef stew to the non-meat-eating Crabb.
