One of the Biggest Action Franchises Ever Is Dominating HBO Max

He has covered everything from Marvel to the Oscars, and Marvel at the Oscars. He also writes obsessively about the box office, charting the many hits and misses that are released weekly, and how their commercial performance shapes public perception. In his time at Collider, he has also helped drive diversity by writing stories about the multiple Indian film industries, with a goal of introducing audiences to a whole new world of cinema.

Despite facing a massive speed bump, one of the longest-running and most successful action franchises of the past two decades is back on track. The series, which began more than two decades ago, will return with an eleventh and final installment in 2028, five years after the previous entry underperformed at the box office and received mixed reviews. But it seems as if the franchise's heyday is in the rearview mirror — the series peaked around a decade ago with an installment that grossed $1.5 billion worldwide despite suffering major setbacks during production. The most recent movie had a tumultuous production as well, which led to its budget ballooning to a reported $378 million. The franchise is no stranger to on-set troubles. One of the most controversial chapters in its history unfolded on the set of the eighth installment. The incident impacted the direction the franchise took in subsequent years, and its effect continues to be felt to this day.

US markets saw their biggest slump since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran on Thursday as Donald Trump said the conflict’s impact on oil prices had not been as bad as he expected.

The Dow closed 450 points down, while the S&P 500 dipped 1.7%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 2.3%, plunging into correction territory, which happens when an index falls at least 10% below its most recent peak.

Oil prices have surged since the start of the conflict, reaching levels not seen since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pushed up global oil prices in 2022 and 2023. At the end of day on Thursday, Brent crude oil, the global benchmark, was about $107 a barrel while US crude hit $93 a barrel. Average US gas prices at the pump reached $3.98 a gallon, according to AAA.

The Nasdaq Composite fell more than 1 per cent in morning trade in New York, keeping the tech-heavy index in correction territory – more than 10 per cent from its late October high.

Markets are “moving from the ‘inflation concern’ phase of the crisis into recession concern phase”, 3Fourteen Research’s Warren Pies said on X.

Stocks, bonds and gold all fall in market slide

The war in Iran and the spike in energy prices have rattled global markets, impacting not just stocks but also safe havens like bonds, gold and currencies. That’s leaving investors with fewer places to hide.

The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq are each set for their worst month in a year. When stocks hit a rough patch, or economic uncertainty abounds, safe haven assets like gold or government bonds can provide investors with some protection. But they’ve both dropped alongside stocks this month, serving little value as a hedge against the turmoil.

US stocks closed lower Thursday: The Dow fell 469 points, or 1.01%. The S&P 500 fell 1.74% and had its worst day in two months. The Nasdaq sank 2.38% and closed in correction, down more than 10% from its peak in late October.

Kylian Mbappe Reveals Injury Truth—And There Is Still Cause for Concern at Real Madrid

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé addressed the “false” speculation surrounding his knee injury in recent weeks, taking aim at those who reported on it “without having any basis in fact.”

The France international missed three weeks of action for Los Blancos to finally deal with a nagging issue plaguing his knee since December. Rumors swirled regarding the severity of the injury, with some reports claiming Mbappé needed surgery while others prescribed him a few weeks rest.

Now that he returned to the pitch, appearing off the bench against Manchester City and Atlético Madrid last week, the 27-year-old is setting the record straight about his injury.

How Melbourne ended up with the biggest comedy festival in the world

"We were kids who weren't trying to do or be anything," the Doug Anthony All Stars' Paul McDermott (centre) says. "It was glorious." (ABC Archives)

Paul McDermott doesn't remember a lot from the first Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) 40 years ago, where he performed as part of the now-legendary musical comedy group, the Doug Anthony All Stars.

He has only vague recollections of the troupe's early ad-lib-heavy shows, like "performing in the middle of Victoria Parade, where the trams go through".

But it'd be hard to forget falling backwards onto a beer bottle mid-gig.

McDermott's memories of the first MICF are hazy because "it was a long time ago and [he's] indulged a lot in the intervening years". (ABC Archives)

It’s taken 40 years, but this comedian finally got her shot at the festival big time

Denise Scott is 70, and she’s been telling jokes for a living for longer than she cares to remember. Or can remember, for that matter.

Asked by fellow stand-up Nath Valvo how many times she had performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival as the pair shared hosting duties for the launch of the 40th edition on Monday, she drew a blank.

“I have no idea,” she said. “I don’t remember any of the titles of the shows. Most of the material is gone, never to be seen again. But, you know, that’s what it’s about – it’s about trying, and never ever giving up.”

The 40th anniversary of the comedy festival billed as the biggest in the world has brought back some memories for comedy legend Denise Scott.

While Scott said she can't remember how many shows she's done at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, or what any of them were called, there is one that sticks in her mind.

It's the time her disapproving mother missed seeing her rendition of the Rage Against The Machine's song Killing In The Name, because the staging collapsed.

The Danish toymaker that built a global empire on interlocking plastic bricks has unveiled what executives are calling the most significant evolution in its 93-year history: a tiny computer embedded inside a standard Lego brick.

Announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Lego Smart Play represents an eight-year, several-hundred-person development effort to add interactivity to physical toys without requiring screens, apps or complex set-up procedures.

“We introduced a step change to the Lego system of play,” Julia Goldin, Lego’s chief product and marketing officer, told this masthead. “We’re introducing a platform consisting of a smart brick, tags and interactive minifigures that fits seamlessly with the rest of the system, but provides an opportunity to bring a new dimension to play.”

On March 1st, 2026, The Lego Group will begin selling the most ambitious brick it’s ever made: a tiny computer that fits entirely inside a classic 2×4 Lego brick. When it detects NFC-equipped smart tags nearby, embedded inside new Lego tiles and new Lego minifigures, or when it sees other Smart Bricks, the company claims it will make entire Lego sets come to life — starting with the humming lightsabers, roaring engines, light-up blasters, and the music of Lego Star Wars.

Apple's biggest sci-fi show of 2026 already has one huge glaring flaw

William Gibson's cyberpunk dystopia is uniquely suited to the animated medium

The term “cyberpunk” conjures images of futuristic cityscapes, simulated realities, and technologically advanced cyborgs. While this sci-fi subgenre had its origins in the literary New Wave movement of the 1960s and ‘70s, the foundational tenets of cyberpunk were established by William Gibson’s Neuromancer, the first entry in his influential Sprawl trilogy. Gibson’s 1984 novel invented key concepts associated with cyberpunk, including the act of jacking into the matrix and the existence of cyberspace as a dangerous digital frontier.

Of course, Gibson wasn’t the only writer to sculpt this now-oversaturated subgenre, but Neuromancer shaped the cyberpunk landscape for decades to come. Everything from Ghost in the Shell to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners owes a debt to Gibson, as the book ventures beyond genre aesthetics to carve out a dystopian ethos filled with cyberhackers and AI antagonists. Numerous attempts have been made to adapt Neuromancer into film, with the likes of music-video director Chris Cunningham and Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice, In the Tall Grass) being attached at some point. But none of these efforts bore fruit, as the novel’s eccentric worldbuilding proved unadaptable to the big screen.

Netflix Just Added The 30 Year Old Keanu Reeves Sci-Fi That Helped The Matrix Get Made

Netflix has finally added a sci-fi cult-classic that people either love or hate, with very little in between. The film was such an inspiration, in fact, that it was what helped the Wachowskis, famous sibling duo directors, get The Matrix made. Fearing that their initial pitch for what would become their biggest movie was too weird, they actually used this film as a template—and the studios took the bait, giving us one of the most iconic sci-fi movies of all time.

Johnny Mnemonic, based on the story by William Gibson and starring Keanu Reeves, centers around a data courier named Johnny (Reeves) who possesses a secret stash of information that was implanted into his mind. However, if Johnny can’t retrieve and access the data within 48 hours, it will self-destruct, killing him in the process. Accompanied by Jane, played by Dina Meyer, a physically enhanced bodyguard, Johnny heads out on the perilous journey to acquire the passwords that will save his life, only to discover that he’s being hunted by violent criminals and the businessman who hired them, all desperate to get their hands on the data he holds.

Apple TV's 'Neuromancer': Everything We Know About the Long-Awaited Sci-Fi Adaptation

There is no denying it, Apple TV+ is killing it in the sci-fi space. Arguably more so than any other streaming platform at the moment, with titles such as Severance, Silo, Foundation, For All Mankind, Shining Girls, Invasion, Strange Planet, WondLa, and Pluribus, to name but a few. Yet, on the horizon for the streaming platform is what is easily its most ambitious and anticipated project to date: William Gibson's Neuromancer.

Previously deemed "unfilmable" due to the complex narrative structure, use of inner monologs, and abstract concepts laid out in the novel, the work has nonetheless been highly sought after for an adaptation, given that the original story is considered a landmark of the cyberpunk genre and highly influential within sci-fi. Yet, the team behind bringing Neuromancer to the screen for the first time appears to be on the right track, based on everything we know so far about the upcoming Apple TV+ Original.

The 14 Best TV Shows of 2025

On the small screen, 2025 was all about money—the ostentatious peacocking of wealth on shows such as Sirens, And Just Like That, Selling Sunset, and With Love, Meghan; the spiraling production costs of episodes themselves; the politicized wrestling over which megacorporation will take over Warner Bros. Discovery and its TV arms, including HBO. CBS canceled The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, in what seemed to many critics like an obvious sop to the Trump administration, ahead of Paramount’s $8 billion merger with the production company Skydance. ABC briefly pulled Jimmy Kimmel Live off the air, until public outrage mounted to such an extent that the market value of Disney, its parent company, fell by $4 billion. It’s hard to remember another time when the line between profiteering and entertainment has felt quite so porous.
