No rest for the weary as Sixers host Trail Blazers

The Hospital Sixers face a much stiffer test Sunday against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Portland Trail Blazers come to Philly Sunday a young and hungry team firmly in the Play-In picture of the loaded Western Conference. The Sixers, still decimated by injuries and one suspension, will have their work cut out for them.

On Saturday, the VJ Edgecombe-led Sixers built a 28-point lead against the tanking Nets. Brooklyn then made a fourth-quarter push to briefly take a one-point lead. Luckily, Quentin Grimes and company did just enough in the final minutes to secure the win, which keeps them tied with the Atlanta Hawks — who own the tiebreaker — for eighth in the East. They’re 1.5 games back of the sixth seed and final guaranteed playoff spot.

PHOENIX — Portland Trail Blazers All-Star guard Deni Avdija left Sunday's 92-77 win against the Phoenix Suns because of a lower back injury.

Avdija was listed as questionable coming into the game but decided to play. He lasted just one minute before leaving the court and going back to the locker room.

Avdija — who has been battling lower back issues for weeks — came into the night averaging 25 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists.

Avdija Exits Early Versus Suns With Back Issue

Portland Trail Blazers All-Star Deni Avdija’s attempt to suit up against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night only lasted 59 seconds of game action.

On Portland’s second offensive possession in Phoenix, Avdija’s back appeared to lock up again after he backed down Suns guard Ryan Dunn in the post and passed the ball out to Donovan Clingan. There was minimal contact on the play, but Avdija immediately reached for his lower back in noticeable discomfort and walked toward the Blazers bench as the Suns went down the floor on offense. Portland forward Jerami Grant committed an intentional foul to stop play, and Avdija checked out at the 11:01 mark of the first quarter.

Anthony Edwards Could Be Sidelined for Wolves' Last Game Before Break

The Timberwolves have listed Anthony Edwards as questionable for Wednesday night's home game against the Trail Blazers due to an illness.

Edwards, who scored 30 points in Minnesota's blowout win over the Hawks on Monday night, has labored through ailments this season. He missed four games with a hamstring strain early in the season, and a toe infection, which the team has called "right foot injury maintenance," has caused to him miss some time as well.

If he doesn't play Wednesday night, it'll be his 10th missed game of the season. That's uncharacteristic for Edwards, who missed a total of nine games in the previous three seasons combined.

The need for nastier paint defense in Portland on Saturday

It doesn’t happen often, yet maybe in the case of the Memphis Grizzlies, the sequel against the Portland Trail Blazers goes much smoother than the original. Yet that’s only going to happen if they don’t get crushed on the boards or experience the turd quarter.

It’s another entry in the team’s skeleton crew chronicles on the road, so the team will have to disrupt the ball without fouling and stay aware of the off-ball threats.

Notably, the Grizzlies’ road winning percentage is 0.9 points lower (39.1) than their home winning percentage (40.0). Here is what you need to know.
