ACCC blocks Coles supermarket to protect regional city's independents

The competition regulator has blocked Coles from developing a new supermarket in Kalgoorlie in WA, under a new regime for assessing acquisitions.

The city already has a Coles, a Woolworths, two franchised IGA supermarkets, and two independent grocers, and the ACCC said Coles acquiring the new site was likely to substantially lessen competition.

Coles could take the ACCC to the Australian Competition Tribunal for an appeal overseen by an economist, a businessperson and a judge.

In an unprecedented move, Australia's consumer watchdog has exercised new powers to block the opening of a Coles supermarket, on the grounds it could knock out smaller competitors in the surrounding region.

Supermarket giant Coles has been blocked from setting up a new store in a regional mining town in an unprecedented move to protect local competitors.

Australia's second-largest supermarket chain has been hoping to acquire the lease for a vacant lot in Somerville, a suburb of the Goldfields town of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia.

It proposed to develop the site into a full-line supermarket and liquor store, the second of its kind owned by Coles in the town.

Council blocks new truck stop, drivers dealing with 'filthy' roadside poo

The transport industry has rallied behind a Tasmanian business amid council roadblocking a new truck stop development one driver says would help keep them "rested and alert".

Scottsdale-based owner of C. R. & S Jones Transport Calvin Jones said truck drivers are in desperate need of a place to refuel and rest between the north and south of the state.

The Road Transport Hall of Famer said due to logbook rules and how long they're allowed to drive for, drivers needed somewhere suitable.

Mr Jones said unhygienic roadside pull-over areas and hefty fines are driving good drivers away from the industry.

Industry rallies behind rejected Oatlands truck stop ahead of council rethink

Truck drivers on Tasmania’s busiest freight route have nowhere safe to stop or use a toilet for 105 kilometres – and the industry says a rejected Oatlands truck stop would have fixed the problem.

The Southern Midlands Council will today reconsider its February refusal of the more than $6 million Tas Petroleum development, after direction from the Tasmanian Planning Commission.

Scottsdale-based operator Calvin Jones, who has driven the Midland Highway for 53 years and runs Dobson’s Transport, said current roadside pull-over areas were unsafe and unhygienic.

“It is common to see dirty nappies, rubbish and even piles of vomit scattered through this area,” Jones said in a letter to councillors.

China blocks US sanctions against five ‘teapot’ refineries

Ministry of Commerce says sanctions against refineries accused of importing Iranian oil violate international law.

China has announced an injunction to block US sanctions placed on five Chinese refiners accused ‌of buying oil from Iran.

The US sanctions announced by the Department of the Treasury late last month bar the refiners from the US financial system and seek to penalise anyone doing business with the firms.

In a statement on Saturday, China’s Ministry of Commerce said the sanctions “improperly” restrict business between Chinese enterprises and third countries “in violation of international law and the basic norms governing international relations”.

U.S. warns banks of sanctions risk over China ‘teapot’ refineries handling Iranian oil

The U.S. Treasury warned financial institutions Tuesday that they could face sanctions if they engage in dealings with Chinese refineries that process Iranian oil.

The Treasury urged financial institutions in a statement to avoid facilitating transactions involving independent refineries, known as "teapots," that import Iranian oil, as such transactions may expose them to sanctions.

China purchases approximately 90% of Iran's oil exports, the Treasury noted, with teapot refineries accounting for the majority of these imports.

"This revenue ultimately benefits the Iranian regime, its weapons programs, and its military. Some Chinese teapot refineries have used the U.S. financial system to conduct dollar-denominated transactions and procure U.S. goods," the Treasury added.
