Carlton has confirmed young star Elijah Hollands has been admitted to hospital after the worrying scenes from Thursday night's game against Collingwood.

The club asked that the privacy of Hollands and his family be respected.

"While the Club acknowledges the public’s interest, it again asks that the privacy of Elijah and his family be respected," a statement read.

"This request for privacy extends to the media to please not report or speculate on Hollands' location and private health information."

The AFL and AFLPA are awaiting the findings of a club investigation, after Hollands suffered a mental health episode during the game.

‘There was a bit of chatter’: Pie aware of Hollands talk on field

Add articles to your saved list and come back to them anytime.

Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard was aware of talk on the field on Thursday night that Carlton’s Elijah Hollands was not right, but did not personally witness anything to raise an alarm.

Maynard was not opposed to Hollands directly in the match but overheard conversations on the ground among teammates who were surprised at the Carlton player’s behaviour.

Maynard’s comments follow a report from Age football journalist Caroline Wilson that Hollands had told a Collingwood player he’d been drinking.

“I wasn’t aware of what was going on, but I think there was a bit of chatter happening and I didn’t pay much attention to it at all and if I did, I definitely would have said something,” Maynard told this masthead on Monday.

Herald Sun chief football reporter Jay Clark believes it would be a massive shock if Carlton goes unpunished for its handling of Elijah Hollands’ mental health episode, declaring it a “line in the sand moment” for the AFL.

But while stunned by the Blues’ lack of in-game action, dual premiership Kangaroo David King believes it’s a one-off, club-related issue that doesn’t require sweeping, AFL-led changes.

From the President: April 19, 2026

I know Elijah Hollands has been front of mind for so many of us connected to the Carlton Football Club.

Elijah's welfare is what matters most right now, and please be assured that remains our focus.

Since the game, the Board has been working closely with Chief Executive Officer Graham Wright and General Manager of Football Chris Davies to obtain a thorough account of the circumstances both leading into and throughout the match. The Club has been in regular consultation with the AFL and AFLPA, and will continue to do so, as facts are gathered in a supportive and respectful setting, and we are confident that valuable learnings will come from this process.

Matters of State: Blues and Maroons spine contenders

For the first time in a decade, a Queensland State of Origin team will be named for the April 30 series opener in Newcastle without Ali Brigginshaw.

With a new coach, new captain and new halves pairing, the Maroons are set to begin a new Origin era.

Highly regarded Dragons coach Nathan Cross has taken charge and he will be aiming to reverse last year's series loss with a new playmaking combination following Brigginshaw's Origin retirement and the loss of Tarryn Aiken through injury.

Brigginshaw has been a feature of every Maroons team since 2016, when the fixture was still known as the Interstate Challenge before becoming State of Origin in 2018, and has been captain since 2019.

Man to fill Walsh void as forgotten star earns recall in SEVEN changes: Predicted QLD Team

They may be defending champions, but Billy Slater’s Queensland team for Origin I is set to look very different than the side that clinched the shield last season.

Injuries to Reece Walsh and Ben Hunt have thrown the spine selections into chaos, while the returns of David Fifita and Kalyn Ponga are set to effect some incumbent stars.

Blues utility Connor Watson could be on the move after being granted permission by the Roosters to speak with rival clubs.

This is not a simple matter of Watson no longer being wanted at the club.

According to Code Sports, the Roosters have just told Watson that if he can find a long-term deal at another team they would give him their blessing to leave early.

Clubs circle as Watson not seen in the long-term by the Roosters

NSW utility Connor Watson has been told he can test the waters, with the Sydney Roosters granting permission to the 29-year-old to negotiate with rivals.

With another year on his deal, The Daily Telegraph reported that Watson has been told that if he can get a long-term deal elsewhere, the Roosters would not stand in his way for the 2027 season and beyond.

Manly Sea Eagles and the PNG Chiefs are the frontrunners circling the dummy-half, with Perth Bears also in the mix for his signature.

A flirtation with Rugby 360 last year raised eyebrows, and a recent switch in management added more to the speculation.

TEAMS: Blues make three changes, Tigers get a boost

The teams are in for Thursday night's game in round one

CARLTON has dropped recruit Liam Reidy after one game for his new club, while Blake Acres is also missing for Thursday night's game against Richmond.

Reidy, recruited from Fremantle in the off-season, played just 61 per cent game time against Sydney last week and has been replaced in the Blues' side by fellow ruck Hudson O'Keefe.

Acres (shoulder) was a chance to return after getting through a VFL game last week, but he's been left out, although Lachie Cowan (calf) and Matt Carroll (hamstring) have been recalled.

Adam Saad (hamstring) and Ashton Moir (omitted) are the other outs for the Blues.

When Will Hayward kicked his first goal for new club Carlton, eight minutes into the first quarter of Thursday night’s AFL season opener at the SCG, the former Swans favourite turned to the crowd and gestured at them to be quiet.

They hardly needed to be told. A silence had already fallen over the home supporters, as everything that could go wrong for the Swans did.

Isaac Heeney had taken an accidental knee to the head from former teammate Oli Florent and was not certain to return for the second half, as his team went into the break 10 points down.
