Melbourne and football boss Alan Richardson are parting ways after seven seasons with the veteran official at the helm.

Richardson joined the Demons in 2020 after he finished up as St Kilda coach and was a key figure in Melbourne’s drought-breaking premiership in 2021.

Two competition sources with knowledge of the situation, but who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed Richardson was leaving at the season’s end.

He informed key football department personnel in the past week that this season would be his last at the club.

Richardson was part of the group who told Simon Goodwin he was being sacked as coach last August after the Melbourne board decided to move on the coach.

‘I wouldn’t be going to Essendon’: Matthews slams Bombers; Lyon again eyeballs reporters in presser

Australian Football Hall of Fame Legend Leigh Matthews has taken a major swipe at Essendon, declaring anyone who has a choice wouldn’t apply for the Bombers’ vacant coaching role, and he would have no confidence in heading there under the current administration.

Matthews, a four-time premiership coach who also featured in three-straight grand finals against the Bombers as a player with arch-rival Hawthorn, declared he “wouldn’t be going to Essendon” if he was still a coach.

“From the outside I said, ‘Oh well, good luck’. If I was a coach, I wouldn’t be going to Essendon. If you desperately want a job, you just go for it, right? But, anyone who has choices ain’t going to Essendon,” Matthews told 3AW on Saturday.

Dogs, Cats still the frontrunners, but Daicos joins Pies’ chase for Butters

Collingwood and Richmond have both met with Port Adelaide midfielder Zak Butters, with the Magpies using their champion Nick Daicos as part of their in-person pitch to the game’s most-accomplished free agent.

The Magpies and Tigers – both viewed as trailing the Western Bulldogs, in particular, and Geelong, in the race for Butters – have nonetheless held face-to-face meetings with the Port Adelaide superstar, sources familiar with the meetings have confirmed.

Collingwood’s decision to make Daicos part of their pitch to Butters – the 23-year-old superstar was in the club’s meeting with Butters during this season – is a measure of Daicos’ value as a selling point to players, but also of Collingwood’s wish to support their young superstar with seasoned quality via free agency.

HOSTING another game in Perth, North Melbourne will be desperate for an improved performance against West Coast.

North Melbourne (5-7) put on a horror show at its home away from home in Bunbury when conceding the last 19 goals of the game in a humbling defeat to the red-hot Fremantle.

The Kangaroos have now conceded seven goals or more in a quarter seven times this season and need to find a way to slow – or even stop – opposition run-ons if they are to snap their 0-6 record away from Docklands this year.

West Coast (4-9) was given a reminder of the improvements it has made this year as it was left frustrated after failing to take its chances late in the game for a heartbreaking defeat to Port Adelaide.

Melbourne has announced a double debut ahead of Saturday’s match against Essendon

JUST 16 days on from joining the AFL world, mid-season draftees Lukas Cooke and Joel Fitzgerald will make their debut against Essendon on Saturday.

Cooke’s debut comes after a dominant display in the VFL, patrolling Casey’s backline with 32 disposals, 13 intercepts and 11 marks. While Cooke has spent time playing across multiple positions, he flourished as a defender in the SANFL, averaging 18 disposals and eight marks prior to being drafted.

The tall defender arrived at Melbourne following five years building his craft playing for the Woodville-West Torrens Eagles.

TEAMS: Bombers get a boost, Dees livewire dropped, Eagles young gun injured

The teams for Friday and Saturday's round 14 matches are in, plus the squads for Sunday's games

MELBOURNE has dropped Latrelle Pickett among four changes for its rematch with Essendon on Saturday.

Aside from omitting the exciting first-year player, the Dees have also lost Caleb Windsor to injury, but named sore skipper Max Gawn.

Meanwhile, Essendon has named defender Jordan Ridley for his third senior match of the season, along with first-round draft pick Dyson Sharp to face a Dees team it beat at Gather Round.

In other round 14 team news, No.1 draft pick Willem Duursma will be an absentee for West Coast's match against North Melbourne, out with a calf injury.

The Western Bulldogs have made one change ahead of their Thursday night Retro Round match against Adelaide.

As revealed on Tuesday, Luke Kennedy will make his AFL debut.

He is the sole change and replaces Lachie McNeil, who will miss with concussion.

Jedd Busslinger, Lachie Jaques and Sam Davidson have been named the emergencies.

The Bulldogs will wear a 2003-inspired striped ASICS guernsey for the Retro Round clash.

ESSENDON interim coach Dean Solomon has labelled Carlton forward Harry McKay’s time-wasting efforts in the dying moments of the Bombers' five-point King’s Birthday Eve loss as "smart".

McKay took a mark 60m out from goal and signalled to the umpire that he was taking a shot, winding down the clock as he used his 30 seconds to prepare.

McKay's shot dropped 30m short of the goal line, highlighting that he was never in range.

The Bombers kicked the final two goals of the game, but ran out of time, going down by five points to their arch rivals.

Carlton’s Harry McKay conceded he used the set shot rules to his advantage to take time off the clock in his side’s five-point win over Essendon on King’s Birthday Eve.

As the Bombers closed in, McKay marked around 60 metres out on the forward flank with 1:45 left in the game, immediately signalling he was taking a shot on goal despite the implausible distance and angle.

Carlton continues its resurgence under interim coach Josh Fraser, with a five-point victory over Essendon earning the Blues a fourth-straight win.

Earlier, Jai Serong snapped a last-gasp major to earn Sydney a two-point win over St Kilda, after the Swans had trailed by as many as 33 points in the first half.

Essendon dominated the early stages of the game, and won only their second first quarter of the season, but the Blues surged back to level the scores at three quarter time before a dramatic final term.

Harry McKay lined up for a kick from goal well outside the distance and let the clock run down 42 seconds before kicking to the square. Essendon kicked a goal from Zach Reid with nine seconds left, but fell short to remain on one win for the year.

As the coaching futures of Brad Scott and Michael Voss continue to come under scrutiny, fresh reports have spoken to the potential repercussions facing Essendon and Carlton at either end of the decision-making spectrum.

On The Couch’s Jon Ralph revealed on Monday night that the Bombers would face a significant financial burden if it opted to move on from Scott, with the club locked into the entirety of his deal which runs out at the end of 2027.
