Victoria’s ex-COVID boss the latest high-profile exit under Ben Carroll

Jeroen Weimar will leave his role as secretary of the Department of Transport and Planning, the latest high-profile exit under new Victorian Premier Ben Carroll.

Carroll announced in a statement on Thursday that Weimar would leave the role he was appointed to in January 2025, to be replaced by Fiona Adamson.

Weimar was once the state’s COVID Commander and was in charge of the authority tasked with delivering the Commonwealth Games before the government decided to cancel the event.

In the statement, Carroll said he wanted to acknowledge Weimar’s contribution to the department and across the public service, including during the pandemic.

Victorian transport boss ousted amid secret tax scandal

Premier Ben Carroll has forced the resignation of the head of Victoria’s Transport Department, just hours after announcing he had scrapped a secret tax on the state’s public transport users that initially had been intended to help fund the Suburban Rail Loop project.

Jeroen Weimar, who was a key bureaucratic ally of former premiers Daniel Andrews and Jacinta Allan, was on Thursday preparing to immediately finish up in his role as the secretary of the Department of Transport and Planning.

Secret transport fare hike to fund Suburban Rail Loop will be abolished

Ben Carroll this week announced "bells and whistles" would be cut from the Suburban Rail Loop project. (ABC News: Danielle Bonica)

The Victorian government will abolish a levy on public transport fares to fund the Suburban Rail Loop project, which was revealed by the auditor-general's office this week.

The levy was hidden in annual fare hikes to account for inflation.

Abolishing the levy, a decision that will need to go to cabinet, will leave a hole in Victoria's state budget.

Premier Ben Carroll has declared he will abolish the secret tax on Victorian public transport fares that was only revealed 18 months after the fact by the state's auditor-general.

Mounjaro is a popular drug used for eight loss and to treat Type 2 diabetes.

Eli Lilly has not agreed to price points for the Australian market.

The company CEO David Ricks says he is still open to bringing the drug into Australia.

Eli Lilly pharmaceuticals CEO David Ricks says he still wants to reach an agreement with the Australian government and bring diabetes and weight loss drug Mounjaro into the Australian Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

The US-based pharmaceutical giant had previously walked away from a deal to have the drug listed on the PBS, due to a pricing dispute.

VIDEO: PBS failure to list Mounjaro for type-2 diabetics questioned

DAVID RICKS, ELI LILLY CEO: Great to be with you again.

SARAH FERGUSON:  These weight loss and diabetes drugs have been phenomenally successful. Do you actually want Mounjaro to be listed on the Australian PBS? Or are you concerned about how it might impact how much you can charge for the same drugs in America?

DAVID RICKS:  Well, we definitely want Mounjaro to be listed on the PBS scheme. I think we've attempted that at least three times so far, and it's unusual to not be listed because it's on the WHO essential medicine list. And I think your expert clinicians, well, expert clinicians everywhere, but including in Australia, are highly recommending it for people with diabetes.

FIFA boss issues $57m threat to nations who oppose his sale plan

Gianni Infantino has given all member associations little time to decide their view on his plan to share stakes in FIFA, warning that some nations may miss out on up to $57 million in funding if they don’t approve his proposal by September 19.

Infantino issued a letter to all federations explaining the benefits of his private investment scheme and the risks that could follow if they are to reject his plans – a new part of the proposal that may sway the initial views of some associations.

The FIFA boss has made clear that riches of up to $10 billion will be made accessible by January 1, 2027, with $40m in funding set to be offered via his investment plan, with a company founded by Joshua Kushner – the brother of US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared – leading the search for investors.

Football Australia breaks silence on FIFA boss’ $40m World Cup shakedown as civil war erupts

Football Australia has broken its silence as governing bodies around the globe have shared their disbelief and outrage at being held to ransom over FIFA’s plans to sell a stake in the business operations of the World Cup and its other competitions to private investors.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino plans to create a semi-private subsidiary called FIFA Forward Enterprise with FIFA holding a majority share, the 211 member nations having a 20 per cent share and 20 to 30 per cent stake sold off to private investors.

Emergency talks called in response to FIFA's World Cup sell-off plan as French government confirms meeting between European football bodies

The French government has announced an emergency meeting involving European football's governing bodies to discuss FIFA's controversial plan to open commercial activities to private investors. The proposed changes have sparked widespread concerns over the future governance and financial integrity of the sport, prompting swift political intervention to ensure transparency.

The French government has confirmed that an emergency meeting of Europe’s football governing bodies will take place this Wednesday.

The primary agenda is to carefully analyse FIFA's intention to open its lucrative commercial activities to private investors. Sports Minister Marina Ferrari announced the development in a firm statement on X, which was aptly titled "Football is not for sale." This rapid response highlights the growing unease among European stakeholders regarding the potential commercialisation of the sport's global governing body. Ferrari described Gianni Infantino’s ambitious plan as a "major shift" that fundamentally raises "extremely serious questions" about the governance, structure, and overall future of world football.

Jurgen Klopp: Germany boss threatens to quit new job if media invade family's privacy

Klopp's first game in charge will be against the Netherlands on 24 September

Jurgen Klopp started his reign as Germany's head coach by threatening to quit if the media invades his family's privacy.

The former Liverpool manager was appointed on a four-year deal on Friday to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned this month after Germany's shock World Cup defeat by Paraguay in the last 32.

But the 59-year-old issued a warning to the media as he held his first press conference as Germany's head coach.

"If you behave badly and don't leave my family in peace then I'll be gone, I'll just turn away," Klopp said.

Juergen Klopp has signed a deal until 2030 to become Germany coach and told a press conference in Frankfurt he was "delighted."

The former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool boss was the DFB's immediate first choice to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned following the World Cup last-32 exit to Paraguay in June.

Klopp has been global head of soccer at the sports arm of drinks maker Red Bull, but will now lead Germany into the Nations League, qualifying for Euro 2028 in the British Isles and qualifiers for the 2030 World Cup. His contract will begin on August 15.

WiseTech boss probed over sex, trafficking claims

Federal police are investigating billionaire businessman Richard White over claims he exploited a woman’s immigration status and financial insecurity for sex and that he provided false information on a visa application.

The Australian Federal Police’s human exploitation taskforce launched the investigation into White, executive chairman of WiseTech Global, one of the country’s most successful software companies, this year after a complaint from a former executive at another company he controls, Kyckr.

White is alleged to have used his power and influence to coerce Caroline Heidemann, a Brazilian once employed by WiseTech as a cleaner, into a sexual relationship. Heidemann made similar claims against White last year, but she ultimately reached a settlement with the businessman.

Opinion | Trump's nonstop parties illustrate his circus-style populism

The president is obsessed with the spectacle of power — and has little concern for anything else.

Less than a day after hosting an Ultimate Fighting Championship fight on the White House lawn, President Donald Trump turned his attention to announcing another splashy event: the July 4th event in Washington meant to mark the nation’s 250th anniversary, which Trump says will now be “the most spectacular TRUMP RALLY of them all” and feature the “largest fireworks show in history.”

As MS NOW reported, this event was, according to the organization managing the event, originally intended to celebrate America’s founding and love of country in a nonpartisan manner. The event description made no mention of Trump and promised a “celebration of the people, principles, and patriotic spirit that make the United States the greatest nation in the world.”

'We'll be a powerhouse': Giants boss on possible name change, big list calls and CEO hunt

In a rare interview, GWS chair Tim Reed shares his long-term vision for the club as the Giants look towards a new era

GREATER Western Sydney chair Tim Reed says the Giants are aiming to defy gravity like perennial challengers Geelong, saying he is certain his club will become a "powerhouse".

The Giants have had a mixed start to this season, with a 3-5 record coming after a spate of injuries to key players.

This season already shapes as a year of change, with chief executive Dave Matthews announcing last month that 2026 would be his last at the helm.

In a rare interview, Reed, who took over as the club's second-ever president ahead of the 2024 season, told AFL.com.au the Giants are past their "start-up" beginnings and after playing finals in eight of the past 10 years, are aiming to move into their next evolution in their 15th year in the competition.

Viva Energy's chief executive, Scott Wyatt, has defended a massive jump in the company's refining profit margins amid surging fuel prices.

Earlier this week, Viva reported a Geelong refining margin of $US22 a barrel over the first quarter, only one month of which was affected by the spike in oil prices associated with the Iran conflict.

Those margins were almost three times higher than the $US7.90 a barrel recorded in the first quarter of last year, and come on top of the rise in crude oil prices, which are up about $US30 a barrel since the beginning of the Iran war on February 28.

Researchers from the Austrian Academy of Sciences and University of Vienna last year discovered a way to reset a quantum particle to its prior state, effectively rewinding time for a single atom or electron. Now, another breakthrough in time travel has been made: there is a portal at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium which takes those who enter it back precisely 2½ years.

Spurs have unveiled a new manager, Roberto De Zerbi. Having deployed a classic relegation “firefighter” in Igor Tudor – only to discover he was an accidental arsonist – they have pivoted 180 degrees to another front-footed, progressive coach, who is more in line with the club’s preferred identity.

Roberto De Zerbi targets ‘Ange-ball’ revival to save Spurs from relegation

Roberto De Zerbi intends to bring back “Ange-ball” as he attempts to prevent Tottenham’s first relegation in 49 years.

De Zerbi has only seven games in which to impart his complex football philosophy to his players and wants to replicate the rampant, marauding style of the former manager Ange Postecoglou, who won Tottenham’s first trophy in 17 years but was dismissed after finishing 17th in the Premier League last season.

“I want to keep the ball,” De Zerbi said. “I want to see again the Tottenham I watched with Postecoglou because, in my second season in Brighton, there was Postecoglou here with a lot of these players and it was one of the best teams in terms of quality of play. With Pedro Porro, with [Destiny] Udogie, with [Micky] van de Ven, with [Cristian] Romero, and I would like to see it again.”

Bring back Angeball! New Spurs boss’ surprise nod to Aussie as relegation scrap heats up

Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor were ridiculed earlier in the season for their dull style of play which helped plunge Tottenham to the depths of a relegation battle.

So, now De Zerbi wants to bring back the electricity of Postecoglou’s aggressive tactics which yielded a fifth place Premier League season in the former Celtic boss’ first season and, of course, the Europa League trophy in his second season.
