Breezy Johnson pipped for gold at World Cup Finals as Aicher puts pressure on Shiffrin
Italy’s Laura Pirovano claimed the women’s downhill World Cup title with victory in Lillehammer on Saturday, as Emma Aicher closed the gap on leader Mikaela Shiffrin in the overall standings.
The 28-year-old Pirovano had never even finished on a World Cup podium until earlier this month.
But her third successive downhill win, beating Breezy Johnson by 0.15 seconds, delivered the crystal globe in a discipline which was dominated earlier this season by Lindsey Vonn before injuries struck the American great.
Kira Weidle-Winkelmann rounded off the podium ahead of Ariane Raedler and Aicher, who kept her hopes of a remarkable overall triumph alive.

KVITFJELL, Norway — Until the beginning of March, Laura Pirovano had never been on a World Cup podium in 124 races.
On Saturday, the Italian skier earned her third downhill victory and secured the discipline title, a prize Lindsey Vonn was the favorite to win until she was injured at the Olympics.
"It's not possible. It's crazy," the 28-year-old Pirovano said. "I have a lot of emotion. I still can't understand everything. I am just beyond happy."
Pirovano's only remaining challenger for the title, Emma Aicher, finished fifth, as the German skier reduced the gap to Mikaela Shiffrin in the overall standings to 95 points with three races remaining.

Sensational Pirovano seals Downhill Globe with third win in succession
Laura Pirovano (ITA/Head) claimed the Audi FIS World Cup Downhill Crystal Globe title in stunning style in Kvitfjell on Saturday, grabbing her third victory in a row to snatch the season-long crown from rival Emma Aicher (GER/Head).
Less than a month ago the Italian stood fourth in the standings, having never finished on a World Cup podium or ended the season higher than sixth in a Globe race. But two extraordinary victories in two days in Val di Fassa – both won by 0.01 seconds, the narrowest margin in the sport – changed everything.
Suddenly, Pirovano was starting the final Downhill of the season in the leader’s red bib, 28 points ahead of nearest challenger Aicher.
