Former Wallaby and Tiger Brian Smith dies, age 59

The Wallabies have paid tribute to former Australian rugby and Balmain Tigers star Brian Smith, who has passed away at the age of 59.

Smith, who played Test rugby for both Australia and Ireland before switching to play rugby league in 1991 for Balmain and Easts, died after a battle with cancer.

Smith moved into coaching after his playing career and spent time at leading clubs around the world, but over the last decade, he was a rugby coach and head of sport at Scots College in Sydney’s east.

Scots principal Dr Ian Lambert told the school community Smith “had been very unwell in recent months and battling an aggressive cancer”, according to a report in News Corp publications.

‘Shock’ after former Wallabies, rugby league star loses cancer fight

A former Wallabies and rugby league star has died after a health battle. He was 59.

Brian Smith played five Tests for the Wallabies in 1987, before controversially switching allegiance to Ireland and playing a further nine. He then played 43 league matches for Balmain and Eastern Suburbs in the early ’90s.

After retiring from his football career, he went on to lead the sports department at Sydney’s prestigious Scots College.

“Brian had been very unwell in recent months and was battling an aggressive cancer,” Scots principal Ian Lambert wrote to school colleagues.

Illinois native Brian Gutierrez wants to have fun with Mexico national team

Editor's note: Follow Mexico vs. South Africa live updates and highlights from the 2026 World Cup opener.

MEXICO CITY — If Brian Gutierrez is overwhelmed, he isn't showing it.

The 22-year-old Illinois native is just days away from representing Mexico at the World Cup.

"I’m happy to be here. I want to support, to do things well and just want to have fun," he said in Spanish at Mexico's Centro de Alto Rendimiento before a training session on Tuesday, June 9. "It’s a dream for me, for any player who aspires to play professionally. My teammates and I are really excited, really happy to start."

Brian Gutiérrez becomes the latest MLS player to reach a rare Mexico milestone

The first match of the 2026 World Cup has ended. Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0, with the goals of Raul Gimenez and Julian Quiñones.

In the preview, one could imagine a dominance by the Mexican team, but not that match. South Africa seemed lost in many stages of the match, giving Mexico an advantage on both sides.

Still, the MLS was involved in the World Cup opener because Brian Gutiérrez was in the starting lineup.

The Chicago Fire prospect was part of Mexico’s starting lineup in their World Cup debut. With this, Gutiérrez becomes the first MLS Homegrown player to start the opening match of a FIFA World Cup game for Mexico since Carlos Salcedo in 2018.

Brian Norman Jr predicts first round KO in Errol Spence vs Tim Tszyu: “He’s going to sleep”

Former welterweight world champion Brian Norman Jr. doesn’t see the fight between Errol Spence Jr and Tim Tszyu lasting long when they meet this summer.

Spence last fought in July 2023 when he competed for the undisputed welterweight title, but he was comprehensively outclassed and beaten by long-term rival Terence Crawford, who went on to further strengthen his legacy and establish himself as an all-time great while Spence was inactive.

The former unified champion now looks to get back on track as he returns from three years out at a catchweight of 158lbs against Tszyu in Australia.

Speaking to Fight Hub TV, Norman, who has been sparring Spence in recent weeks, believes that his fellow American will get the job done inside three minutes.

Brian Norman Jr Backs Errol Spence to Stop Tim Tszyu

Former welterweight champion Brian Norman Jr. believes Errol Spence Jr. is going to make a statement when he returns against Tim Tszyu this summer in Australia.

Spence has not fought since his one-sided loss to Terence Crawford in July 2023 for the undisputed welterweight championship. The former unified champion is now preparing to return after a long layoff in a 158-pound catchweight fight against Tszyu on July 25.

Norman says the version of Spence he has seen recently in training camp looks dangerous, and he doesn’t expect the fight to last long.

“You’re definitely going to see a different version of Errol. I feel like he is going to be better than he was in the past,” said Norman Jr. to Fight Hub TV. “What I mean by that is, first-round knockout coming soon.”

New England coach McDermott backs Connor and criticises Wane’s ‘unfair’ treatment

Brian McDermott, the new England head coach, has insisted that Super League’s reigning Man of Steel, Jake Connor, is central to his plans for this year’s World Cup, before appearing to attack the treatment of the Leeds Rhinos half-back by his predecessor Shaun Wane.

McDermott was unveiled on Thursday as England’s coach on a short-term deal for the tournament in Australia this autumn. The former Leeds and London coach is now working in the NRL as an assistant for Gold Coast Titans and saw off competition from Sam Burgess to be named as Wane’s successor.

The buildup to last year’s Ashes, which proved to be Wane’s final series in charge, was overshadowed by his decision to omit Connor despite him being crowned Super League’s best player in 2025. Wane insisted that selection was “not difficult” and insisted he paid no attention to accolades like the Man of Steel, with Connor consistently overlooked to the bemusement of many.

NRL 2026: Titans assistant lands England top job

The Titans congratulate NRL assistant coach Brian McDermott on his appointment as England head coach ahead of the 2026 Rugby League World Cup.

The proud Englishman will take on the role as the most successful coach in the Super League, winning four titles in charge of the Leeds Rhinos, alongside Challenge Cup and World Club Challenge victories.

He has also won three premierships as a player and represented England / Great Britain in five Tests, becoming a highly respected figure in the international game.

McDermott will take on the prestigious role while continuing his NRL duties after joining Josh Hannay’s coaching staff ahead of the 2026 season.

The Athletic: Brian Scalabrine not surprised by Cooper Flagg's ascent: 'He's the same kid'

"His ability to play through contact is the same as when he was 14," Scalabrine said of the Mavericks' 19-year-old rookie.

DALLAS — Wanting to test his young pupil’s mettle, Matt MacKenzie phoned a friend in New England.

MacKenzie, a basketball trainer from Maine, reached out to Brian Scalabrine, the ex-NBA player turned color commentator for the Boston Celtics whose organized pickup games in Beantown were notoriously competitive. Several current and future Division I players participated in it.

Mavericks’ climb back to contention around Cooper Flagg might be shorter than you think

Prohibited from answering questions directly about an Anthony Davis trade to the Wizards that was not yet official, Mavs coach Jason Kidd made it clear that a team building around Cooper Flagg can have a bright future. And in the very near future, too.

Make no mistake, the best thing that Mavericks interim GM Mark Riccardi did in sending Davis to Washington in a multi-player deal before the league’s trade deadline was clear cap room. Get excited about the players at your own risk.

Three are in the final year of their deals so their future here is as “expiring contracts,” not role players. Guard A.J. Johnson might be a nice addition to the rotation as Max Christie was in the last Davis trade that was not so popular in these parts. And the picks Dallas receives should best be viewed as five second-rounders, given that, along with three true second-round picks, Dallas is getting Oklahoma City’s first in June (likely between 28 and 30) and a Golden State pick that is top-20 protected in 2030.

Cooper Flagg Continues To Silence Doubters

Some people still doubt Flagg, but that’s getting more and more difficult.

There are apparently some people who still think that Cooper Flagg is the product of hype, the latest Great White Hope, but the facts on the court show how lazy that sort of thinking is.

Because Flagg is just killing it. These are some stats from the last three games:

Over his last 10 games, Flagg is getting 24 ppg, 7.5 rebounds and 4 assists. He’s shooting 50% too.

Lazy thinkers think it’s all media hype or entitlement, but Naji Marshall, who actually plays in the NBA and who is currently a Maverick, says he wants to play his entire career there because “I want to play with Cooper Flagg my whole motherf*****g career. That’s my dog, and he’s gonna create history. And to be part of that would be unbelievable.”
