US hits more bridges in Iran in expansion of its air strike campaign

The United States has expanded its air strike campaign against Iran by increasingly hitting bridges.

The US military says dozens of Iranian military targets have been hit in the latest wave of strikes.

Iran says it has launched fresh attacks on US facilities in the Gulf.

The United States expanded its air strike campaign against Iran early Friday by hitting more bridges and apparently collapsing a tower at a key Iranian port, part of US President Donald Trump's threats to start striking infrastructure to pressure Tehran to ease its chokehold on the Strait of Hormuz.

The commercial tankers struck as they transited the Strait of Hormuz in recent weeks were "highly, highly targeted", according to marine traffic watchers.

US bombards Iran in sixth-straight night of attacks

The US has made good on threats to bomb civilian infrastructure in Iran. In its sixth-straight night of attacks, the US struck bridges and an airport, as it expanded its target list further into Iranian territory. Soraya Lennie has the latest.

US strikes continue on Iran; Malcolm Roberts crtiicised for antisemitic post; Specsavers, OPSM put patients before sales

Thanks for reading the national news blog for today, Thursday, July 16. This is where we’ll end the rolling coverage.

Here’s a brief look back on some of today’s headlines.

One Nation senator Malcolm Roberts accused the “mainstream media” of waging a campaign against him, declaring: “First they came for Pauline. Then they came for Barnaby. Now it’s my turn.” The Queensland senator said in a statement on Facebook that news reporting on his comments amounted to “selective cherry-picking and dishonest distortions” designed to protect the political “uniparty”.

Sam Neill’s management confirmed that the much-loved actor died of pneumonia. Philip Grenz, Neill’s long-time representative, issued a statement because, he said, several media stories containing “inaccuracies and outright falsehoods” had circulated since news broke on Monday of the 78-year-old’s death in St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney.

Israel's expanded invasion of southern Lebanon was at least 12 days in the making, with bridges across the country's southern river systematically targeted and destroyed from March 12.

ABC NEWS Verify has geolocated and mapped the many bridges crossing Lebanon's Litani river and its tributaries that have been damaged or destroyed in Israel's latest outbreak of war with Hezbollah.

The destruction of bridges has meant the people that remain in villages within the evacuation zone have no easy way of leaving, and essential services like health care and food are inaccessible to those in the south.

Blasts heard in southern Beirut – as it happened

Donald Trump has said he will extend his pause on his threat to attack Iran’s energy infrastructure for 10 days until 6 April, claiming that the request came from Tehran.

In a post on Truth Social, the US president claimed talks are going “very well” and repeated his attacks on the “fake news media” for reporting to the contrary (Iran has also reported to the contrary).

Trump threatened last Saturday to would strike Iranian energy infrastructure if Tehran did not reopen the strait of Hormuz.

Then, on Monday he postponed his threat for five days (until Friday), citing “very good and productive conversations” with Iran on ending the war (which Tehran dismissed as “fake news” designed to “manipulate” the oil markets).
