BTS Arirang review: K-pop idols rekindle their fire

In case you were in any doubt, just look at the frenzy surrounding the South Koreans' comeback.

On Saturday, the band will kick off a sold-out, 82-date world tour with a free concert in Seoul, which is expected to be attended by more than 250,000 in-person fans and will be live-streamed on Netflix to more than 190 countries.

When the tour wraps up in 2027, BTS are expected to have generated more than $1billion in revenue. Some more outlandish estimates suggest they will eclipse the $2billion haul of Taylor Swift's Eras tour.

Even so, demand is so high that Mexico's president, Claudia Sheinbaum, has written to the South Korean government asking for BTS to play more shows in her country.

It's one of the most anticipated events of the year: the return of K-pop supergroup BTS.

Today marks the release of Arirang, the first new music since all seven members completed their mandatory military service in the South Korean Army.

Named after a centuries-old Korean folk song, Arirang closes the gap since 2022's anthology album Proof and 2020's chart-topping Be, which housed the international hits Dynamite and Life Goes On.

BTS is supporting the album release with a mammoth world tour, spanning 34 regions, including Australian dates scheduled for 2027.

BTS Unveil Track List for 'Arirang' Featuring Collabs With Mike WiLL Made-It, El Guincho, More

With the countdown underway to Arirang’s March 20 release, BTS have unveiled the 14-song track list for their anticipated comeback album.

“Swim” will serve as the title track and the anthemic “Into the Sun” will close out the album, the band announced on Tuesday. The tracks were produced and written by some of the biggest names in music, including Mike WiLL Made-It, Flume, Diplo, El Guincho, JPEGMAFIA, and Ryan Tedder, among others.

The project stands to serve as a culmination of the journeys V, Suga, Jin, Jungkook, RM, Jimin, and J-Hope have taken so far in their 13-year run, which has seen them embark on solo projects. In reuniting for their first album since 2020, the members had a very “hands-on approach” in the creation of the album, with RM having a hand in every track except for the interlude.

BTS' New Album Has Contributions From Tame Impala, JPEGMAFIA, Flume, El Guincho, & More

Having completed their mandatory military service, K-pop megastars BTS are returning this year with new album Arirang. Today they've shared its tracklist and a detailed lineup of contributors, which includes some interesting names.

Kevin Parker, better known as Tame Impala, is a writer and producer on "Merry Go Round." Rosalía collaborator and long-ago Stereogum Artist To Watch El Guincho has writing and production credits on "Hooligan." Hip-hop super-producer Mike WiLL Made-It takes on those roles for "Aliens" and "2.0." Diplo is all over the album as a writer and producer, including on opener "Body To Body" alongside Ryan Tedder, who also has several credits. Another one of the Diplo tracks, "FYI," has production from Flume and writing from rap provocateur JPEGMAFIA. Will BTS be scaring the hoes this time around? Screaming about a bomb in their car?

BTS comeback show sells out immediately as 260,000 fans set to descend on Seoul

Booking system freezes and screens crash amid rush of fans trying to secure tickets to 21 March free concert

Tickets for BTS’s comeback concert in central Seoul were snapped up almost immediately on Monday night, with authorities expecting an estimated 260,000 fans to descend for the K-pop group’s first full performance in nearly four years.

At one point, more than 100,000 people flooded the booking website when sales opened at 8pm for the free concert at Gwanghwamun square on 21 March, causing screens to crash and booking systems to freeze.

About 15,000 tickets for the concert at the historic plaza in front of Gyeongbokgung palace vanished almost immediately.

BTS concert prompts closure of Gyeongbokgung, museums and theaters

Less than three weeks before BTS takes the stage at Gwanghwamun Square on March 21, the city is preparing for large crowds, with authorities announcing safety measures and temporary closures of nearby historic sites and cultural venues.

The Korea Heritage Service said Gyeongbokgung, the main royal palace of Joseon (1392-1910) in Gwanghwamun, will be closed, with its parking lot shuttered and public access restricted.

Officials said an emergency task force for palaces would be activated to conduct intensive inspections and on-site monitoring in key areas, including Yeongchumun, the west gate, and Geonchunmun, the east gate.

The National Palace Museum of Korea, which sits adjacent to the palace, will also suspend operations on the day of the concert.

It takes two: As BTS announces ‘Arirang’ festival, ARMY brings the confetti

The countdown has begun. As BTS gears up for its first post-military release, “Arirang,” Seoul is buzzing with anticipation for what is expected to be one of K-pop’s biggest comebacks yet — and so are the septet’s devoted fans, ARMY. Known for their dedication, ARMY has already started the party. The celebratory mood is taking hold, with fans themselves at the helm, organizing their own events in eager anticipation of welcoming their favorite group back.

“This is BTS’s first post-military group comeback, so I’m obviously really excited,” said Kim Hae-ri, who is running a cafe called Haeri Coffee in Seongsu, eastern Seoul. On Feb. 18, her coffee shop near the Han River was adorned with a large photo of J-Hope, along with merchandise featuring him decorated across the cozy space. Often referred to as "birthday cafes," such events are part of K-pop fan culture. Fans typically collaborate with local coffee shops to hand out fan-made merchandise and small gifts to celebrate an idol's birthday, but as Kim, both a business owner and a devoted ARMY, organized the celebratory event on her own to mark the rapper’s birthday.

BTS stand to make $1bn as they announce mammoth comeback tour

K-pop idols BTS have announced a globe-spanning, 79-date world tour, marking their return to the stage after a four-year hiatus.

With dates in London, Tokyo, Munich, Sydney and Los Angeles, it's likely to be one of the biggest tours of the year, especially as the band haven't played outside of the US and South Korea since 2018.

Their previous world tour set records for a K-pop act – earning about $246 million (£182 million) at the global box office. Along the way, BTS became the first Korean act to headline Wembley Stadium.

The new tour will kick off with three nights in South Korea's Goyang Stadium on 9 April, 2026, before setting off across Asia, Europe and America.

BTS propelled K-pop to global stardom. Nearly four years later, they’re back

When the world’s biggest K-pop group announced their hiatus in late 2022, they were at the height of superstardom. They regularly topped music charts, won prestigious awards, and arguably transformed the genre into a global cultural phenomenon.

Now, BTS is back – and coming to a city near you. As the clock struck midnight on Wednesday in Seoul, the group announced the dates and locations of a highly anticipated world tour, with their new album expected to release in March – the band’s first in nearly four years.

In what will be their biggest tour yet, BTS will perform across 34 regions, starting in April with multiple concerts in Goyang, South Korea and Tokyo, Japan, before traveling to other cities across Asia, North America, Europe, South America and Australia. The tour is currently scheduled to conclude in Manila, Philippines in March 2027, though a message on the band’s website said more dates would be announced in Japan, the Middle East “and more”.

It’s official: BTS are back! For those who are fans of the K-Pop group, it’s been a long time coming. Nine years, in fact.

While the group have been active throughout the global pandemic and performed a small run of shows in Seoul, Busan, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, it’s been a long time since ARMY outside those cities have been able to see the members in concert.

Of course, we have been lucky enough to see the solo projects from each of the members – some of which have included tours in the US, Asia and Europe – many fans have been wondering when we’ll see BTS in Australia again. Luckily, it could be sooner than you think.
