The partnership sounds incongruous on paper, yet Victorian MP Josh Burns has just welcomed a baby girl with fellow MP Georgie Purcell, an animal rights activist and vegan.
Together with Mr Burns' seven-year-old daughter from a previous marriage, the couple divide their time between Ms Purcell's farm in Kyneton and their Melbourne home in his electorate of Macnamara, where they juggle their respective parliamentary duties.

Josh Burns, an Australian federal representative from the Labor Party, said that the period following the events of October 7 and the terrorist attack at Bondi Beach was the most difficult time of his public life. The lawmaker, who represents the Macnamara district in Melbourne and is Jewish, spoke in an interview with ABC about his personal struggles in the wake of the attacks on the Jewish community and the internal conflict between his identity and the actions of the Labor government.
Burns grew up in the Melbourne suburb of Caulfield, home to Australia’s largest Jewish community. His electoral district also includes Ripponlea, where the Addas Israel synagogue was set on fire in late 2024. Police reported that it was a politically motivated attack. Six months earlier, according to police, at least five people smashed the windows of Burns’s office in St. Kilda and scrawled “Zionism is Fascism” on the wall.

Annabel heads off to country Victoria to meet with Labor MP Josh Burns and his partner Georgie Purcell, a Victorian state parliamentarian representing the Animal Justice Party.
Josh lives principally in his urban Melbourne electorate of Macnamara, which is where he grew up, the descendant of Jewish immigrants. But since Josh and Georgie have a young baby, they have been spending a bit of time in picturesque rural Kyneton at Georgie’s farm, which features 26 rescue animals, including one grumpy pony.
Josh, who observes a vegan diet, cooks a feast of felafel, homemade pita bread, salad and chips. While chopping and chipping, Annabel learns about his upbringing and why he likes to work behind the scenes to negotiate outcomes.
