    $100m illegal tobacco haul after tip-off from China

    Australian and Chinese authorities have confiscated almost $100 million worth of illicit tobacco in what federal authorities are touting as a major boost for bilateral relations amid Beijing’s crackdown on the lucrative illegal cigarette market.

    Australian Border Force officials, acting on intelligence from Chinese authorities, intercepted more than 100 shipping containers between January and May, 91 of which contained 60 million illegal cigarettes and 60 kilograms of loose-leaf tobacco. The haul has an estimated value of more than $92 million, the ABF said.

    Officers from the Anti-Smuggling Bureau of General Administration of China Customs arrested 60 people suspected of being involved in an international criminal syndicate smuggling millions of South-East Asian-manufactured cigarettes into Australia after identifying the network’s smuggling routes.

    DEA, GRPD drug bust on Thursday sparked social media posts

    GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Federal agents seized one kilogram of fentanyl and made an arrest Thursday during a multi-jurisdictional drug operation on Grand Rapids' west side.

    The operation attracted the attention of several neighbors, who posted about it on social media. I tracked down details about what happened.

    The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) executed a search warrant near Stocking Avenue Northwest and Alpine Avenue Northwest as part of an investigation that has been ongoing for at least two months, according to DEA officials.

    Grand Rapids police confirmed they assisted in the multi-jurisdictional investigation. The operation was staged at a local church before the arrest was made.

    Thursday’s DEA, GRPD Drug Bust Ignites Social Media Buzz

    In a notable drug operation on the west side of Grand Rapids, federal agents seized a significant amount of fentanyl. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) executed a search warrant on Thursday, resulting in the arrest of a suspect involved in illicit drug activities.

    The operation, which has been underway for at least two months, took place near Stocking Avenue Northwest and Alpine Avenue Northwest. Local law enforcement agencies, including the Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD), played a crucial role in supporting the DEA during this multi-jurisdictional initiative.

    The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) made record seizures in four Mountain States last year, most of which were funneled through the southern border by two cartels. 

    In 2025, the DEA seized 8,729,000 fentanyl pills and nearly 3,100 pounds of methamphetamine across the four-state Mountain region that includes Colorado, Utah, Montana and Wyoming, the agency said in a news release.
