Todd Marshall has reportedly emerged as the potential circuit-breaker in a complex deal that could help Port Adelaide teammate Zak Butters land at the Western Bulldogs, while still allowing the Power to pocket the prized pick No.5 as free agency compensation.

High-profile AFL journalist Tom Morris revealed on Monday evening that the Port utility could be sent to the Bulldogs in a separate trade involving significant draft capital, as the clubs explore how to satisfy each other while still unlocking Port’s access to a third first-round pick.

Bulldogs ‘desperation’ questioned in stunning $18m player trade

The Western Bulldogs got their man, luring star midfielder Zak Butters ahead of rivals Geelong and Richmond, who were also in a race that went down to the wire.

The Cats were reportedly favourites to land the 26-year-old, until the Dogs upped their offer by as much as $3m to a total of $18m over nine years.

However, this has led to some questioning whether the Bulldogs have overpaid for Butters and whether it may come back to haunt them.

Not only will they have to pay the midfielder effectively 11 per cent of their entire salary cap, but they will also have to trade multiple first round picks to Port Adelaide to get the deal done.

Its vice-captain and dual All-Australian Zak Butters has dominated headlines all season as one of the biggest free-agents available this off-season; and has now confirmed the worst-kept secret in football that he has requested a trade to Victoria.

"I've made a decision to head home. It's obviously been one that I've wrestled with for a while now. It's been a tough decision and one that I haven't taken lightly," Butters said on Monday.

Geelong firming for extraordinary heist to rock AFL rivals

Geelong is heading into another finals series with high hopes of contending for a premiership, but are quietly a chance to put together one of the strongest off-season dual acquisitions in AFL history.

And that is because the Cats are seen as the inevitable destination for GWS captain Toby Greene, and are the reported frontrunner for Port Adelaide champion Zak Butters.

Greene is an unrestricted free agent, meaning the Cats will not have to give up draft capital to sign the star forward, who is reportedly keen to finish his career in Victoria and chase an elusive premiership.

Butters meanwhile is a restricted free agent, which gives Port Adelaide the right to match any offer that comes his way. They have already made it clear they will do so and force his team of choice to the trade table.

Butters has not yet nominated a club, with Geelong, the Western Bulldogs, Richmond and Collingwood all chasing his services across this year.

All have made club-record offers to Butters, with his move to a rival as hotly contested as any of the major trade moves this century, including Chris Judd's trade from West Coast to Carlton at the end of 2007.

AFL apologises as Butters case is dismissed due to juror misconduct

PORT Adelaide superstar Zak Butters has had his umpire abuse charge thrown out by the AFL Appeal Board after it was ruled a panel member's decision to listen to part of the original Tribunal hearing from his car was a "miscarriage of justice".

And the AFL has apologised to both Butters and umpire Nick Foot, saying it will now "reflect" on the outcome of the case and take lessons from it, while the Power has doubled down on its call for the Tribunal process to be reviewed.

Butters was fined $1500 by the AFL Tribunal last Tuesday for abusing field umpire Foot during the Power's loss to St Kilda in round five.

The AFL has apologised for the inconvenience caused to all parties after a tribunal decision to fine Zak Butters for abusive language against umpire Nick Foot was thrown out on appeal.

Butters was fined $1,500 for using abusive and offensive language after Foot paid a free kick against the Power in their loss to St Kilda at Adelaide Oval.

Foot said Butters asked him, "How much are they paying you?". Butters denied saying this and his club said the star midfielder had been branded a liar.

Butters is a restricted free agent after this season and Victorian clubs would love to lure the Port Adelaide player back to his home state. Neale's well-publicised marriage wows mean he could leave Brisbane later this year and return to WA so he is closer to his children.
