Cricketer hospitalised after scary incident as match abandoned due to ‘misbehaving’ pitch

A first-class fixture at North Sound’s Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in the Caribbean has been abandoned due to a dangerous pitch, with a player hospitalised after being struck on the helmet during the final delivery of the match.

The four-day West Indies Championship contest between Trinidad & Tobago and Leeward Islands was declared a draw after the umpires decided to abandon the match on Tuesday morning.

The hosts were 7-140 in the second innings, leading by 96 runs, when a delivery from fast bowler Hayden Seales reared sharply off a length and struck Jeremiah Louis on the helmet. The previous delivery, tellingly, had kept low.

Essendon called out for baffling Marcus Bontempelli decision as Brad Scott coaching debate heats up

Essendon have been called out for letting Bulldogs superstar Marcus Bontempelli run free without a tag in another early mauling — as an unwinnable debate raged on whether a “helpless” Brad Scott should coach from the box or the bench.

Bontempelli racked up his 18th disposal just minutes into the second quarter on Sunday night with the Bulldogs already up by 35 points.

The Dogs skipper was finding targets left, right and centre while he also had a goal and one assist to his name.

“At what point do you go ‘you know what, he’s the best player in the comp probably — just someone for five minutes go play alongside him’,” Kane Cornes said on Channel 7.

In the summer of 2018, Essendon’s coaches were presented to influential coterie group members for a Q&A at “the Hangar”. Such sessions are commonplace at AFL clubs, where passionate and cashed-up supporters have access to coaches as part of their coterie package, some costing five figures.

These forums help build relationships between the football department and prominent supporters, while also raising valuable revenue if done well. This one wasn’t.

At the time, hopes were high among the Essendon faithful. The drugs suspensions had been served, the Dons were coming off a finals berth, and the recruiting of established trio Jake Stringer, Adam Saad and Devon Smith from other clubs was supposed to propel them further up the ladder.

Police called, traffic chaos as desperate motorists fight for free petrol

A fuel giveaway gimmick in Melbourne’s west devolved into chaos as motorists snarled traffic around the block before police had to step in.

RS Rewards announced earlier this week it would be giving away $100,000 worth of fuel at the Liberty petrol station in Truganina from 10am on Good Friday.

But as keen motorists arrived, the station quickly became overwhelmed, with cars blocking intersections and lining nearby streets waiting for their shot at a free tank of fuel.

Sharing the craziness throughout the morning on his Instagram page, organiser Billy Beasley said people began lining up for the free fuel since 4am.

Three uncapped players called up for final home Socceroos friendlies before World Cup

Tony Popovic makes no promises to convince young players to commit

Tony Popovic said he did all he could to convince Adrian Segečić to play for the Socceroos and repeated the maxim that he won’t be “selling the shirt”, after naming a 26-player squad for upcoming friendlies, including one player who has never been to Australia.

Hibernian striker Ante Šuto, who was born and raised in Croatia, joins two other uncapped players for this month’s matches against Cameroon and Curaçao – young defender Lucas Herrington, who plays with Colorado Rapids, and forward Deni Jurić, who departed Socceroos camp last November due to injury.

Socceroos coach Tony Popovic has launched a passionate defence of his management of Adrian Segecic, vowing he will never make promises to young players about game time or bow to pressure to stop them defecting to another country.

Popovic unveiled a 26-player squad on Thursday for Australia’s upcoming friendlies against Cameroon and Curacao – their last fixtures on home soil before the World Cup in June – but the biggest talking point was a player who wasn’t in it, and now probably never will be.

Segecic, a former Sydney FC academy product who plays for Portsmouth in the English Championship, had his request to switch his international allegiance from Australia to Croatia approved over the weekend by FIFA.

Adelaide: This team was supposed to be Australia’s weakest Ashes side since 2010-11. This team has repeatedly been referred to as “not the strongest Australian side”, “not vintage” or “not as good as earlier teams”. This team has at times been called too old, too outspoken, too injury-affected and even, bizarrely, too woke.

About 2.10pm local time in Adelaide, they sealed the destiny of the Ashes in the space of three matches, or, by another measure, just 11 days. It was emphatic. England did their best to provide a Rorke’s Drift rearguard, helped by a hamstring injury to Nathan Lyon, but Australia still found a way through.

Grandstand at Stumps: An England fight, but Australia retain The Ashes

Australia retains The Ashes with an unassailable lead in the series as it secures the win in Adelaide.

A Nathan Lyon injury, another stellar catch from Marnus Labuschagne and an English fightback with the bat made it an entertaining day for Corbin Middlemas, Jason Gillespie, Darren Lehmann and Stuart Clark to dissect.

Hear from Labuschagne, Cameron Green and Brendon McCullum, as well as the full post-match presentation.

On the day Bazball was officially laid to rest at the Adelaide Oval, after a tense and fluctuating 11th day of this Ashes series, Australia’s victorious cricketers pulled on fresh white T-shirts handed out in the dressing rooms by hometown hero and party starter Travis Head.

Across the front, in big red lettering, was the word ‘Ronball’, accompanied by a cartoon of Australia’s beloved coach Andrew “Ronald” McDonald.
