Starmer rejects calls to quit as pressure mounts over Mandelson vetting

Top Foreign Office official takes fall for fiasco and resigns; Starmer promises to deliver ‘relevant facts’ on Monday.

Keir Starmer says he is “absolutely furious” that he was not informed that Peter Mandelson failed his security vetting before being appointed UK envoy to Washington, as the United Kingdom prime minister faced renewed calls to resign over the affair.

Starmer on Friday maintained that he was kept in the dark about the Foreign Office’s decision to overrule the recommendation of security officials not to give the job to the Labour Party grandee, who was fired in September over his links to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The Epstein curse could now cost Keir Starmer his job

Britain’s PM is fending off calls for his resignation after his former ambassador to the US was appointed to the plum role despite a negative security vetting.

London | UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is engulfed in the gravest crisis of his premiership, facing calls for his resignation after accusations that he misled parliament over the appointment of Peter Mandelson – a pal of disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein – as British ambassador to the US.

Starmer finds himself in renewed political peril over revelations that Mandelson failed security vetting, but officials overruled this, allowing his appointment to Britain’s most important and prestigious diplomatic posting.

Calls to force NDIS providers to register as Labor eyes savings

NDIS reform is expected in the upcoming budget with the government already in talks with states and territories about options. (ABC News: Luke Bowden)

Major providers are calling for stricter NDIS registration rules, arguing it would improve quality and reduce costs.

The federal government is weighing options to slow the scheme's growth, including eligibility and pricing changes.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has indicated Labor will outline its NDIS reform plan at the federal budget in May.

Stricter registration rules would weed out low-quality NDIS providers and result in better services for Australians and budget savings, major operators say.

Further reforms to the National Disability Insurance Scheme are expected to be a key feature of Labor's budget in May, with registered providers calling for tighter controls to stop unscrupulous businesses profiting from the $50 billion program.

Crossbench MPs will push back against Labor’s attempts to rein in spending on the NDIS in next month’s budget, warning that premature efforts to curb the $50 billion scheme’s growth will just move costs onto other areas such as health and aged care.

As NDIS participants cautioned against focusing on costs at the expense of the scheme’s many benefits, several independents, led by Monique Ryan, were on Tuesday writing to the scheme’s ministers, Mark Butler and Jenny McAllister, with their fears that the government was prioritising budget savings over vulnerable people.

Two Labor MPs – both of them doctors – say the NDIS must be redesigned

Two Labor MPs who are doctors want their government to overhaul the National Disability Insurance Scheme, warning that public support would crumble if the $50 billion program isn’t redesigned.

The NDIS is coming under intense scrutiny ahead of the May budget, where driving down the scheme’s growth trajectory to 6 per cent or lower will be a centrepiece of the government’s savings plan.

Labor backbenchers Michelle Ananda-Rajah and Mike Freelander on Monday added to a debate over the scheme’s future as new data reveals people with autism or development delay who have lower support needs now make up more than 40 per cent of NDIS participants.

AustralianSuper calls for end to 30-year ban on super fund borrowing

AustralianSuper is pushing to abolish long-standing rules that prevent it and other major pension funds from borrowing money or issuing debt in what would be the most significant shake-up of the capital rules governing the $4.5 trillion superannuation industry in three decades.

An avenue to issue bonds or notes through capital markets would give funds yet another valuable source of financing, said AustralianSuper chief liquidity officer Chandu Bhindi, shoring up their positions at times of intense market stress while maintaining enough dry powder to maximise their investments.

The head of the agency set up to address bullying and harassment in parliamentary workplaces has outraged survivors by laughing while under questioning at Senate estimates.

Parliamentary Workplace Support Service chief executive Leonie McGregor, asked by Liberal Senator James McGrath if the agency received any complaints, burst out laughing as she replied: "We receive many complaints."

Jo Tarnawsky, who has alleged she was bullied and forced out of her former job as Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles' chief of staff, said Ms McGregor's behaviour in the committee hearing late on Monday night was offensive to survivors.

Against the backdrop of nationwide protests, Israeli President Isaac Herzog's immunity during his four-day visit has been called into question in Senate estimates.

It was one of several queries during Monday's parliamentary scrutiny of the expenditure and administration of government departments and agencies.

Greens senator David Shoebridge has questioned the Attorney-General's Department (AGD) about what prompted legal advice to the Australian Federal Police (AFP) to ensure Herzog's immunity from prosecution during his four-day visit to Australia.

BP faces calls for new strategy to end period of turbulence

Full-year results expected to reveal weaker profits as company also faces investor pressure over climate U-turn

BP will face pressure from shareholders to prove it can leave a turbulent period in the past as it prepares to reveal its full-year results this week.

The company is expected to follow industry rivals by reporting weaker annual profits after global oil prices fell for a third consecutive year in 2025, in the steepest decline recorded since the Covid pandemic.

City analysts forecast BP profits of about $7.5bn (£5.5bn), down from almost $9bn in 2024, following an expected slump in fourth-quarter earnings after crude prices fell below $60 a barrel for the first time in almost five years.

Investors challenge bp over oil and gas spending

INSTITUTIONAL investors have filed a legal challenge against bp over what they describe as “undisciplined” capital allocation to oil and gas projects.

bp recently announced it would increase its spending on its upstream business by 17%, reallocating funds previously committed to clean energy investments.

Funds managing almost £200bn (US$270bn) in assets – including Nest, London CIV, Wales Pension Partnership, Greater Manchester Pension Fund, Merseyside Pension Fund and Pensions Authority Publica (PUBLICA) – have filed a shareholder resolution calling on the company to demonstrate how increased spending on upstream operations will enhance shareholder value.

The investors say they are “unconvinced” that prioritising oil and gas investment will address bp’s recent underperformance.

Rep. Fitzpatrick Calls For Coalition Government, Talks Pres. Trump's Comments On 'Big Personal Favor'

In a new interview, Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick mentioned the replacement of the American two-party system with a coalition government.

In an profile published last week and appearing in Philadelphia Magazine’s February print issue, the five-term Republican congressman argued that the country has devolved into a “zero-sum, all-or-nothing game” that fails to represent a divided electorate.

“The two-party system needs to go away,” Fitzpatrick told the magazine. “We need to move to a coalition government.”

The Middletown Township native, who represents the First Congressional District, cited George Washington’s 1796 farewell address as his inspiration. He noted that the Founding Fathers did not design the government to deal with the current divides.

Brian Fitzpatrick talks Trump’s ‘lack of moral clarity,’ November’s midterms, and his hatred for the two-party system in Philly Mag

Bucks County's representative in Congress also called the state of the FBI under Kash Patel "heartbreaking."

U.S. Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick didn’t vote for President Donald Trump in 2024, penciling in former Ambassador Nikki Haley instead.

In 2020, he voted for Trump. Four years earlier, he wrote in former Vice President Mike Pence’s name instead of Trump.

Those decisions by the moderate Republican, who represents purple Bucks County and a sliver of Democratic-leaning Montgomery County, underscore Fitzpatrick’s unique relationship with and perspective of the president, Philadelphia Magazine reported Friday.

There are times when Fitzpatrick is blunt in his opposition, telling Philly Mag that Trump’s placation to Russian President Vladimir Putin is because of a “lack of moral clarity.”

Perth Glory Women's coach Stephen Peters has criticised a lack of investment in the women's A-League, calling for more funds.

In recent years, the Glory's women's side has been Perth's saving grace, as the men's team suffered back-to-back wooden-spoon finishes.

A new report has found the women's A-League is losing ground to global leagues and rival domestic sports despite strong international interest.

Perth Glory Women's coach Stephen Peters has criticised a lack of investment in the women's A-League, which he says has not reaped the benefits of the Matildas' success at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

In 2015, Elise Kellond-Knight was part of the Matildas squad that took history-making strike action, paving the way for a decade of increased investment that saw the team rise to prominence and Australia secure hosting rights for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and this year’s Women’s Asian Cup. Now, with that continental showpiece less than two months away, the retired midfielder sees the women’s game in Australia at another Rubicon moment, one requiring bold investment in the future of a fully professional A-League Women.
