    No one should be left to die in the middle of Sydney, alone and unseen.

    That was the powerful message delivered by homelessness support worker Erin Longbottom to a crowd gathered in Hyde Park to honour Bikram Lama.

    The crowd gathered at dusk under the fig tree canopy of Sydney’s Hyde Park, tucked behind St James station, holding electric candles in blue, red, white and purple.

    Understanding and acting on homelessness

    It is the antithesis of the Parable of the Good Samaritan. A man lay untended near a busy thoroughfare. A hundred thousand commuters stream past, unseeing. He dies. 

    The Guardian recently published the report about Bikram Lama, a young man whose decomposing remains were found beside bushes at an entrance to St James train station in the city.  

    The report has shocked the wider community into facing up to the stories of the unseen, invisible incidences of present-day homelessness. 

    It has also come at a time when the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart and the Josephite Justice Network are agitating for change through a 150-day advocacy campaign. The ‘A Home for Every Neighbour’ campaign was launched last month on the eve of the Feast of St Joseph.

    If anyone can survive a dream world consisting of depressing memory trails while babysitting a precocious tween and running from a disgusting humanoid made of vines, it’s Max Mayfield. Until the sixth episode, she and Holly Wheeler (Nell Fisher) remain in the place they call Camazotz, Vecna’s mind prison, where a demoralized Max has been held captive for two years. Holly joins Max once Vecna captures her as part of his grand plan to remake the world with children’s bodies as his vessels. But in a twist that wasn’t met with a gruesome death, for once, Holly ended up being the savior Max was looking for.

    When Garry Morgan arrived home on Friday afternoon, his rural mid-north coast property was surrounded by a “big plume of smoke”. Less than twenty-four hours later, two houses on his street would be lost, and its surrounding forest reduced to blackened skeletal remains.

    Morgan’s township of Bulahdelah, around 235km north of Sydney, has become at the centre of a tragedy after a veteran firefighter died on Sunday evening when he was struck by a falling tree, marking what the NSW premier called a “foreboding start” to the bushfire season.

    A firefighter from the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service has died after being crushed by a falling tree near a bushfire on the Mid North Coast. 

    The 59-year-old man was assisting with bushfire prevention work at Nerong on Sunday night when the incident occurred.

    A crime scene has been established and WorkSafe has been notified.

    A community is mourning the death of a firefighter, as the days-long blaze he died battling flares further.

    The experienced firefighter was helping colleagues prepare for a tactical burn north of Newcastle when he was struck and killed by a tree on Sunday night.

    His death is the first bushfire fatality of the summer, which NSW Premier Chris Minns said had already been marked by “dark harbingers” of the threat facing the state after the loss of 20 homes over the weekend.
