The Nationals party leader, Matt Canavan, says the country has spent too much time talking about diversity and not enough on unifying, addressing attenders at the anti-immigration rally outside Parliament House.

Despite having previously condemned Pauline Hanson for her comments against Muslim Australians, Canavan preceded the One Nation leader on stage, and said Australia needed “better standards” on migration.

It’s a similar line to one used by his colleague, the Liberal leader, Angus Taylor – that migration standards have been “too low”.

double quotation markWe’ve just had a little bit too much talk of diversity. We’re all different … And that’s great, but we now just talk all about that and we don’t talk enough about unifying, about [how] we’re one nation.

A man is alleged to have assaulted three nurses, a police officer, a security guard and a visitor to Prince of Wales Hospital during a rampage on Saturday night.

The 51-year-old patient at the Randwick hospital is alleged to have seriously injured a nurse’s leg about 8.30pm, before assaulting two other nurses and a security guard.

He also allegedly used a garbage bin to attack a 26-year-old woman attempting to shield another patient. The woman was visiting a relative at the time.

Police who were at the hospital on an unrelated matter were alerted to the incident and attempted to speak to the man, only for him to allegedly assault one of the officers.

Outspoken Nationals senator Matt Canavan has pushed back on Pauline Hanson’s increasingly inflammatory statements about Australian Muslims this week, saying she is not fit to lead a major political party.

Hanson was on Sky News on Monday night, discussing the thwarted attempts by Australian women and children stuck in Syria to return home.

The One Nation leader said the group hated westerners, saying: “You know, you say, ‘oh, well, there’s good Muslims out there’. Well, I’m sorry, how can you … tell me there are good Muslims?”

Pauline Hanson has issued a partial and heavily qualified apology for suggesting that there are no "good Muslims".

The One Nation leader said she would not apologise for speaking out against radical Islam and the threat she believed it posed to Australia.

The minor party has surged in popularity in recent weeks, according to a series of opinion polls, with an expected by-election in Farrer set to be the first real-world test of whether that will translate into votes.

Canavan attacks Hanson over anti-Muslim slurs

Nationals senator Matt Canavan has attacked Pauline Hanson for suggesting there are no “good” Muslims as the Coalition’s new leadership tries to walk the line between wooing back One Nation voters and celebrating Australia’s multiculturalism.

Hanson unleashed during a Sky News appearance late on Monday while discussing the IS brides and children seeking repatriation to Australia, making comments even her star recruit, Barnaby Joyce, would not clearly endorse on Tuesday.

“Their religion concerns me because what it says in the Koran … they hate Westerners,” Hanson said.
