Why political candidates dress up to run in major UK elections

Andy Burnham – a man who hopes to be the next prime minister – stood shoulder-to-shoulder with a man in a fox costume and an "intergalactic space warrior" with a bin for a face when he was announced as the winner of the Makerfield by-election.

These costumed characters barely registered as unusual to members of the public and supporters, as Count Binface, the fox and another, Howling Laud Hope, all shook hands with Labour's Burnham before he gave his victory speech.

Eccentric scenes like this have become a common sight in British politics, and candidates are often motivated to run for a variety of different reasons. But their satirical stances often give more serious messages a moment of attention – and can even influence future laws.

Binface, foxes and raving loonies: the UK’s proud history of costumed candidates

British love of silliness comes to the fore when politicians stand shoulder to shoulder with satirical rivals

When world leaders are elected, it is usually a solemn moment, but when the Labour party veteran Andy Burnham found out he had won the Makerfield byelection, increasing the likelihood he could become the next prime minister, he was standing next to a man with a bin on his head.

The newest Labour MP was also flanked by a man in a fox costume. Robert Pownall, the founder of the campaign group Protect the Wild, decided to run as a fox in order to demand an end to trail hunting.

More Michigan coaching candidates emerge as transfer portal opening nears

Michigan's search for a new head football coach continues, two weeks after Sherrone Moore was fired.

Names are being floated publicly by agents; the search firm, TurnkeyZRG, is vetting candidates and presenting them to Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel; and the direction of this process still remains muddy.

Manuel and those working on the search for a new head coach have kept a tight lid on leaks, but there are a few known pieces to this puzzle. For one, interim head coach Biff Poggi told reporters on Monday that Manuel informed the players he wants to “have something done by the bowl game.” Michigan plays Texas in the Citrus Bowl on Dec. 31 in Orlando.

Michigan coaching search: Todd Monken emerges as candidate

Michigan Wolverines football is two weeks into its search for its 22nd head coach, following the firing of Sherrone Moore. A new name has emerged Wednesday, with Football Scoop reporting that Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken is being vetted and expected to have conversations with U-M.

“Multiple sources, at both the collegiate and NFL levels, shared with FootballScoop Tuesday afternoon into Tuesday night that Michigan had begun vetting current Baltimore Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken and intended to speak this week with Monken,” the site’s John Brice and Doug Samuels wrote.

Football Scoop reported that Michigan and Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm have conducted “preliminary talks” while he’s been vetted as a candidate. Additionally, following a 27-22 win over Toledo in the Boca Raton Bowl Tuesday afternoon, Brohm was set to spend an extra 24-48 hours in Florida, giving “more than enough time for Michigan officials to conduct more conversations with Brohm, as sources noted to FootballScoop.”

NFL offensive coordinator Todd Monken on Michigan coaching radar

The Michigan football coaching search in the aftermath of the Sherrone Moore firing has been nothing short of a soap opera, at least in terms of fan reaction, conspiracies, and who may or may not take the job.

On Tuesday, all of the scuttlebutt surrounded Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm, with a large swath of the maize and blue faithful having consternation despite his ability to elevate teams. But given that he elevated them from bad to middling, it stands to reason why it's not an awe-inspiring hire.

But Wednesday's name on the list may be closer to generating fan excitement.
